    This lecture on Miles Davis’s Kind of Blue was recorded in the Lawrence Chapel on March 2, 2022. The lecture was designed for students and faculty in the First-Year Studies program. This program, a multidisciplinary introduction to liberal learning, has been a cornerstone of the Lawrence curriculum since 1945. The lecturer, Mark Urness, is Associate Professor of Music at Lawrence. Professor Urness’s diverse performance experience encompasses orchestral, chamber, solo, and jazz playing. In addition to being awarded first prize in the International Society of Bassists Jazz Competition, he has also released Foreground, an unaccompanied jazz CD. Bass World magazine has described his playing as “completely in command of the instrument and the tunes, rife with good ideas, melodic instinct, and groove, not to mention killer intonation on the double stops and chords.” Prior to his appointment to the faculty of Lawrence University, Professor Urness taught at the University of Iowa, Coe College, and the University of Northern Iowa. He received a Master of Music in double bass performance from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, a Bachelor of Arts in music from the University of Northern Iowa, and studied music and computer science at the University of Iowa

    This lecture on Berenice Abbott’s “Tri-Boro Barber School” was recorded in November 2020. The lecture was designed for students and faculty in the Freshman Studies program. This program, a multidisciplinary introduction to liberal learning, has been a cornerstone of the Lawrence curriculum since 1945. The lecturer, Beth A. Zinsli, graduated from Lawrence in 2002 and went on to receive a master’s and a Ph.D. in art history from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Since returning to Lawrence in 2013, she has served the university as Curator of the Wriston Art Galleries, Assistant Professor of Art History, and Director of the Museum Studies IA Program. She has written on contemporary art and exhibitions in Cuba, and is also interested in the interdisciplinary potential of the university art museum

    Identification and Localization of NF-κB During the Embryonic Development of the Schistosome-transmitting Snail Biomphalaria glabrata

    The freshwater snail Biomphalaria glabrata is best known as the intermediate host to Schistosoma mansoni, a parasitic worm that causes the neglected tropical disease schistosomiasis. Because of its role as a host to a parasite, the snail can be used as a model organism to study conserved, immune-related pathways and proteins that may be involved in defense of parasite infection. One complex of proteins under investigation isnuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer (NF-kB), an evolutionarily conserved family of transcription factors that are primarily known for their function in vertebrate immunity and, more recently, processes related to the nervous system. While NF-kBhas been identified in adult B. glabrata, there are no studies examining NF-kBlocalizationduring the snail’s embryonic development. In invertebrates, several studies suggest that NF-kBis a key component in developmental processes, making it plausible that B. glabrata utilizes the transcription factor early in its lifespan. The combinationof NF-kBcharacterization in adult B. glabrataand evidence of this transcription factor’s involvement in the developmental phases of several species of invertebrates ledme to hypothesize that NF-kBis present and playing an active role during the embryonic stages of B. glabrata. In confirmation of this hypothesis, this study presents novelevidenceofNF-kBlocalization during B. glabrataembryonic development using immunofluorescence and western blotting

    Air Quality-Related Health and Environmental Trade-off of Electrification: Evidence from Vietnam

    Abundant evidence has shown that expanding access to electricity dramat- ically widens access to education, healthcare, and equality. However, the liter- ature on the direct impacts of electrification on air quality and health is still in its infancy. While electricity access can lead to higher outdoor air pollution due to increased reliance on fossil fuel combustion, its usage lowers indoor air pollution as households switch from burning solid fuels to using electricity and become distanced from the source of pollution. Contributing to the nascent lit- erature, this article represents the first quantitative examination of this trade- off between the overall emission level and the degree of population exposure to pollution due to electrification. The study draws on the representative Vietnam Household Living Standards Surveys to examine environmental and health out- comes and estimates a satellite-based measure of commune electrification rate using the DMSP/OLS nighttime satellite images and Landscan population grid. I find that although electrification increases the probability that air pollution is among the most pressing environmental issues in a commune, it reduces the probability that a commune reports air quality-related illnesses as one of its top three main health concerns. Thus, as hypothesized, this paper presents ev- idence that electrification alleviates air pollution-related health problems even as it worsens outdoor air quality
