More Than a Moment\u27s Monument: Sonnets in Native Guard
No full textThis lecture on Native Guard, the Pulitzer-Prize winning poetry collection by Natasha Trethewey, was recorded in September 2021. The lecture was designed for students and faculty in the Freshman Studies program. This program, a multidisciplinary introduction to the liberal arts, has been a cornerstone of the Lawrence curriculum since 1945.
The lecturer, Melissa Range, is Associate Professor of English at Lawrence. She is the author of two collections of poetry: Horse and Rider (2010) and Scriptorium (2016), which was selected for the National Poetry Series award by Tracy K. Smith. Professor Range is currently at work on her third poetry collection, dealing with the abolitionist movement in the United States.
The lecture also features four Lawrence students (in order of appearance): Karina Herrera ’22, Chloe Thomas ’23, Parker Elkins ’22, and Smailyn Nicasio ‘2

Get PDFUnpenned is the story of a female singer discovering her voice in a world defined by the male composer’s quill. It is told from the perspective of a vocal performance student preparing for her senior recital during a pandemic and explores baroque and romantic styles, eventually moving into contemporary art song, alternative rock and R&B as the student realizes the expanse of narrative and musical forms through which she can express herself. With this musical journey comes an exploration of female characters, some operatic, and some I’ve created based on stereotypes of women as depicted in films, musicals, books and other forms of literary narrative. Each woman brings her own struggle and sense of power to this journey of self-discovery
