EILENE HOFT-MARCH, over the course of your 34 year 
career at Lawrence you have distinguished yourself as 
a productive scholar, an empathetic, dedicated teacher, 
and a tireless advocate for those aspects of the Lawrence 
experience—French & Francophone Studies, Gender Studies, 
study abroad, and lifelong learning—that are among the 
most consequential, transformative aspects of a liberal arts 
education.
You graduated magna cum laude from Carroll College (now 
Carroll University) in 1974, then went on to earn the M.A. and 
Ph.D. in French at the University of California at Berkeley. 
Following a visiting teaching appointment at Mount Holyoke 
College, you came to Lawrence as Assistant Professor of 
French in 1988. Your scholarly publications include 14 
articles and seven book chapters on an impressive range of 
topics, including French women’s literature and women’s 
experiences in academic administration. You have also 
published three edited collections, the most recent focused 
on teaching diversity and inclusion in the French-speaking 
classroom.
Your skill in the classroom has been recognized by every 
teaching award Lawrence has to offer: the Early-Career 
Teaching Award (granted in 1991), the First-Year Studies 
teaching award (in 1997), and the Excellence in Teaching 
Award (in 2011). You have served as Posse mentor, as special 
assistant to the president, and as acting associate dean of the 
faculty. A steadfast member of the Gender Studies Advisory 
committee, you directed a five-year combined NEH/NSF 
grant to refine the core course sequence in that major. And 
you have been a champion of Björklunden, serving on its 
advisory board and offering courses on France and French 
culture in its summer adult learning program.
In acknowledgment of your stellar record in teaching, 
scholarship, and service, in 2009 you were appointed 
the Milwaukee-Downer College and College Endowment 
Association Professor.
Eilene, in recognition of your many contributions to Lawrence 
and its students, I am pleased to award you the degree of 
Master of Arts, ad eundem, on the occasion of your retirement 
from the faculty.

the following reflection about the shared spiritual journey of the class of 2022.
Oscillation of Progress and Regress:
Question to reflect on and consider, were we happy or were we bitter?
Grab and Go meals, and isolation
Human interactions belong to the past
Lonely thoughts and lonely nights make us wonder about our rights
Each of our actions yield new consequences
The pandemic expedites our path to adulthood
So let us all breathe the air with care
Trust in a transient world, for tomorrow is never the same.

President Laurie Carter 
Laurie A. Carter most recently served as president of Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania, 
where her tenure focused on prioritizing student success, telling the university’s story, building a 
relationship with the community, enhancing overall quality, and strengthening diversity and 
inclusion. Her extensive leadership experience in higher education also extends to Eastern 
Kentucky University and The Juilliard School. 
 


Time to Shine

This lecture on Native Guard, by Natasha Trethewey, was recorded in September 2022. The lecture was designed for students and faculty in the First-Year Studies program. This program, a multidisciplinary introduction to liberal learning, has been a cornerstone of the Lawrence curriculum since 1945.
The lecturer, Austin Segrest, teaches classes in poetry writing and literature, as well as First-Year Studies. He is the author of the poetry collection, Door to Remain (UNT Press, 2022), winner of the Vassar Miller Poetry Prize. His poetry can be found in POETRY, Ploughshares, The Threepenny Review, The Yale Review, Ecotone, The Common, New England Review, and many other journals. His poetry criticism appears in APR, Poetry Northwest, 32 Poems, Southern Humanities Review, and Pleiades
