Correctional Education: A Pathway to Reducing Recidivism in Wisconsin?
Get PDFThe United States has the highest number of incarcerated individuals per capita of any country in the world. Every single year, a large number of these individuals are released from prison and re-enter their communities. However, within three years,many of them will have recidivated and returned to prison. In Wisconsin, roughly 40% of all individuals released from prison will recidivate within three years. The financial burden of keeping such a high number of people incarcerated is monumental and rising. Identifying solutions to the problem of recidivism is critical to reducing the overall costs of incarceration for society. Correctional education programs have been shown to be one avenue in reducing the recidivism rates of individuals who participate in them while they are incarcerated. To date, Wisconsin has had very limited study of its correctional education programs and their effectiveness in reducing recidivism rates. In this descriptive piece of work, I will be examining the correctional education programs offered within the Wisconsin correctional system. Additionally, I will provide a basic analysis of the effectiveness that involvement in Wisconsin’s correctional education programs has on reducing recidivism rates
Evaluating the Application of the Collective Impact Model in Collaborative Health Efforts: A Case Study on Weight of the Fox Valley, 2013-2019
Get PDFThe Collective Impact (CI) Model is a relatively new collaborative model commonly used in community-based health efforts. However, there is minimal data on the effectiveness of this model in community health organizations. With the conclusion of Weight of the Fox Valley (WOTFV), a local health effort adhering to the CI Model, in 2019; I set out to examine the application of the CI Model in a real-world setting and its effectiveness in WOTFV. Through archival research and qualitative interviews with former WOTFV members, I use WOTFV as a case study of the CI Model to interpret how the model promoted and hindered the initiative’s goals. My findings suggest that WOTFV faced substantial barriers in becoming a more sustainable organization and that the CI Model needed to discuss factors such as long-term financial goals, a comprehensive action plan and measurement tools, strong partnership, balance between leadership and collaboration, and more community involvement within their guidelines

No full textThis lecture on Abhijit Banerjee and Esther Duflo\u27s Poor Economics was recorded in February 2022. The lecture was designed for students and faculty in the First-Year Studies program. This program, a multidisciplinary introduction to liberal learning, has been a cornerstone of the Lawrence curriculum since 1945.
The lecturer, Dylan Fitz, is Associate Professor of Economics at Lawrence. He is a specialist in development economics, and his current research evaluates the effectiveness of social programs, the causes of poverty, and the importance of risk and learning in technology adoption. Professor Fitz earned a bachelor\u27s degree in politics at Princeton University with certificates in Latin American studies and political economy. He also earned a master\u27s and doctorate in agricultural and applied economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Professor Fitz joined the Lawrence faculty in 2017, after spending four years in the economics department at Davidson College
