MemoriEase 3.0: A RAG-Enhanced Conversational Lifelog Retrieval System at LSC’25

    Get PDF
We present the third version of the MemoriEase lifelog retrieval system. This system is a conversational lifelog retrieval system built on an embedding-based retrieval method. For LSC’25, we enhance our system with a RAG approach to the question-answering task. In addition, we also incorporate two embedding models, CLIP and BLIP2, for the embedding-based retrieval. We improve our relevance feedback for visual similarity search by adjusting the query embedding. We describe the results of our system at the LSC’25 challenge, where it achieved third place overall and second place in the QA task. The enhancements in this version of the system improve our performance in the LSC’25 challenge

The Challenges of the EU Twin Transitions: Socio-Economic and Geopolitical Context

    No full text
In the EU regulatory and policy agendas, digitalisation and decarbonisation are seen as ‘twin transitions’. Twin not only in the sense that are occurring at the same time, but also advocating for an integration of the two: digitalisation for decarbonisation and decarbonisation of digitalisation. Indeed, digitalisation possesses a Janus-faced role vis-à-vis the green transition: it can be difficult to achieve efficient decarbonisation without the help of digital technologies, but digital technologies do have environmental implications and their increasingly massive use amplifies energy consumption and has an impact on the exploitation of natural resources. For this reason, it also assumed that the EU commitment to achieve no net emissions of greenhouse gases by 2050 should pursue economic growth with a sustainable use of resources

Re-imaging ethics and research with children. Symposium Report

    Get PDF
This report aims to disseminate key insights from the symposium, contributing to broader efforts to address ethical challenges and promote best practices in research involving children. By sharing these findings, the report seeks to inspire further dialogue and actionable steps among researchers, policymakers, and practitioners working in this critical field

Missed Nursing Care Infection Prevention and Control Practices in Acute Hospitals in Ireland During the COVID-19 Pandemic

    No full text
The nursing contribution to patient safety is often linked to their proximity to patients and ability to intervene when quality of care is compromised. However, the quality of nursing care provided also directly contributes to patient outcomes and is associated with increased rates of healthcare-associated infections

EgoMusic: An egocentric augmented reality glasses dataset for music

    No full text
Although audio-augmented reality (AAR) has known applications in music, the use of wearables such as augmented reality (AR) glasses for egocentric audio data capture for music has not been investigated. Current egocentric datasets are mostly focused on speech research, neglecting music’s unique demands for tasks such as real-time optimisation or assistive listening. This paper introduces EgoMusic, a multimodal dataset featuring synchronised egocentric audio-visual data captured with AR glasses during live performances, alongside studio-quality audio references. We investigate AR glasses’ utility for music and baseline artificial intelligence (AI) approaches for hearing enhancement, positioning EgoMusic as the first dataset that enables research for egocentric music AAR

Teagasc agus Foghlaim na Gaeilge i Scoileanna Meán-Bhéarla. Dearcthaí na bPáistí, na nDaoine Óga, na dTuismitheoirí, na Múinteoirí, na bPríomhoidí agus na Múinteoirí faoi Oiliúint. Tuarascáil 2: I dTreo Plean Gnímh don Ghaeilge i Scoileanna Meán-Bhéarla

Reáchtáladh comhairliúchán fairsing chun léargas a fháil ar thuairimí réimse rannpháirtithe i leith theagasc agus foghlaim na Gaeilge i mbunscoileanna agus in iarbhunscoileanna meán-Bhéarla. Sa tuarascáil seo, déantar iniúchadh ar thuairimí agus ar eispéiris páistí, daoine óga, múinteoirí, múinteoirí faoi oiliúint agus príomhoidí a bhfuil baint acu leis an oideachas bunscoile nó leis an oideachas iar-bhunscoile. Ar an iomlán, chuir na rannpháirtithe in iúl gur mhaith leo an Ghaeilge a fhoghlaim, ar bhonn prionsabail, ach dhírigh siad aird chomh maith ar réimse dúshlán a chuireann bac ar fhoghlaim na Gaeilge agus ar dul chun cinn sa Ghaeilge sa chóras i gcoitinne. Roinn na rannpháirtithe neart moltaí a rachadh chun sochair do thimpeallacht níos rathúla, níos ionchuimsithí agus níos spreagúla a chruthú d’fhoghlaim, do theagasc agus do mheasúnú na Gaeilge

‘People say, “It's just allergies”, so no one can be blamed:’ exploring social science drivers of PM2.5 and climate obstruction through civil society perspectives in Thailand

    No full text
Thailand’s air pollution crisis, specifically pollution due to particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter less than or equal to 2.5 μm, PM2.5, is exacerbated by structural inequities and an information ecosystem dominated by vested interests within agribusinesses and the government. This paper explores drivers of and solutions to the PM2.5 crisis, drawing upon often neglected civil society perspectives

Knowledge, disposition and the capacity for instruction: An optional mathematics course for preservice teachers

    No full text
Effective initial teacher education will develop preservice teachers’ disposition towards mathematics and the teaching of mathematics, alongside their mathematical and pedagogical content knowledge. This paper reports on a case study of eight students who participated in an optional mathematics course for preservice primary teachers. Analysis of focus group interviews indicates that students’ dispositions to mathematics and mathematics teaching were influenced by prior negative experiences. Significantly, engagement in the mathematics course contributed both to their self-assessments of their mathematical knowledge, and their professed self-efficacy for inclusive mathematics teaching for conceptual understanding. In this paper, characteristics of the optional mathematics course are identified and implications for initial teacher education are discussed

Sinn Féin and Ireland’s extra-territorial regulation of political finance

    No full text
The Electoral Reform Act of 2022 introduced unique extra-territorial regulation of political finance aimed at Sinn Féin. The legislation compels Irish parties to disclose the assets of all their subsidiaries wherever they are located. One of the rationales behind the legislation was to prevent Sinn Féin from regulatory arbitrage that would give allow it to out-compete others in Ireland subject to a €2,500 limit with money from the UK where donations are unlimited. However, Ireland’s generous public funding means that money is more likely to flow in the opposite direction. The first disclosures under the new rules were made in June 2025. They show that Sinn Féin is asset-rich compared to its competitors in Ireland, but not compared to parties in Spain, especially nationalist parties from the Basque region. This means the party is somewhat better financially insulated against poor election results than its competitors. The disclosures themselves also nudge the party towards a more open culture, where elected representatives and ordinary members are at less of a disadvantage in relation to the party organisation

Peace by procedure: civil servants, metagovernance and the Northern Ireland peace process

    No full text
This paper aims to examine how Irish and British civil servants contributed to structuring the political and procedural conditions for peacebuilding in Northern Ireland. It asks what kind of governance architecture enabled compromise across conflict lines and who was responsible for its design and operation. The article conceptualises these officials as metagovernors – actors who shape the frameworks through which governance occurs – in a context marked by territorial contestation and institutional fragility
