Get PDFIn 1971, the country was still in the process of extreme social upheaval and transformation brought on by the 1960s, and that included small, secluded communities like Gettysburg College. In the Owl & Nightingale Society, the school\u27s theater program, many students found ways to express and explore themselves creatively and personally. Both historically and currently, theater tends to draw in queer people, and can be a comfortable and interesting way to embrace your identity and learn to build and work with communities. These are things queer people often didn\u27t--and still don\u27t--have access to in their everyday lives, making theater a special place for many people. In the spring of 1971, Gettysburg College\u27s aspiring actors, singers, directors, and so on worked hard on an array of fun, thoughtful, and creative plays to put on for their peers--and many found themselves along the way
Implementing a Definition of Street Harassment at Gettysburg College
Get PDFMy project focuses on implementing a definition of street harassment at Gettysburg College. To do so, I plan to add the definition to the Student Code of Conduct through meetings with the Student Life Committee. In order to ensure my success in adding the definition, I will pass an opinion through the Student Senate and send out a survey through engageGettysburg to show support for the definition. By accomplishing this, I hope to make Gettysburg College a more inclusive, open, and safe environment for all students

Redefining the Agency of Jewish Communities Through Ghetto Humor
Get PDFWhile the Holocaust is remembered by historians and victims as a time of suffering and genocide, Jewish ghetto survivors recall numerous occasions in which humor was used to combat the oppression of Nazi authorities. Although many historians emphasized the physical hardships and tragic conditions faced by Jewish victims of the Holocaust, the existence of jokes throughout Eastern European ghettos articulated the legitimacy of humor within the greater context and discussion of coping, resistance, and unification for the preservation of Jewish life and identity in the post-war period. Rather than depicting Jews as solely victims, humor returns agency to the Jews who lived in ghettos by highlighting the complexity of their reality without overgeneralizing their experiences

Argument for H.R. 82 The Social Security Fairness Act
Get PDFThis paper analyzes H.R. 82 The Social security Fairness Act of 2021 by using SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) analysis. The paper focuses on the Windfall Elimination Provision and Government Pension Offset provisions of the social security Act. When social security was initially passed, pension benefits were not extended to public sector employees until the reforms in 1950s. However, in the 1970s the Supreme Court declared that men were no longer required to prove that they were reliant on their spouses to be eligible for spousal or widower\u27s benefits, thereby making thousands of male retirees eligible to receive benefits. In response, Congress passed the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO). The two programs are distinct yet converge in purpose: The GPO reduces retirement benefits for individuals that have worked in state and federal governments. Conversely, the WEP lessens benefits of individuals receiving spousal or survivor\u27s pension. This paper concludes by calling for the passage of the bill while also proscribing a few changes such as including a new revenue raising mechanisms, since H.R. 82 results to new seniors entering social security welfare rolls
