Chaos in Congress: Masculinity and Violence in the Congressional Struggle Over Kansas
Get PDFAccording to Joanne Freeman\u27s recent book on congressional violence, in the years between 1830 and 1860, members of Congress engaged in \u27manly\u27 violence against one another more than seventy times. However, no issue caused more violent personal disputes in the legislature than slavery. In particular, the debate over the legal status of slavery in the Kansas Territory caused a panoply of incidents in Congress, including near-duel between John C. Breckinridge and Francis Cutting in 1854, Preston Brooks\u27 caning of Charles Sumner in 1856, and a brawl in the House of Representatives in 1858. This article examines how these lawmakers\u27 views on masculinity and slavery motivated their involvement in these incidents. Firstly, the article establishes Amy S. Greenberg’s dichotomy of martial and restrained masculinities as a lens of analysis; then it recounts each event and analyzes the masculine practices of each lawmaker. This analysis shows that these three violent encounters resulted from the practice of a specifically Southern iteration of martial manhood grounded in the service of slavery’s interests

Get PDFJimi Hendrix is a household name for any fan of 60s rock music. His unique, effects-driven approach to music simultaneously revolutionized the genres of Rock and Blues. From his use of amplifier feedback, Wah Pedal, and hammer-on fingering in solos to his lyrics an outlet with which he processed his childhood, his music musicianship helped define a decade of music. He found success in England as a Black creator while African Americans continued their fight for Civil Rights back in America. England’s acceptance of Blacks and love of American Blues allowed him to hone his craft in London before leaving his mark on the American music scene. As a member of the 27 Club Hendrix was lost too soon, though the legacy of his music left an immediate impression. His unique style inspired the likes of Stevie Ray Vaughn who replicated his style of music. Hendrix’s musical legacy has never been in doubt, widely regarded as one of the best guitarists of all time, and ranked number one on Rolling Stone’s 100 Best Guitarists of All-Time lists (Rolling Stone, 2019). Many musicians look to replicate his style and sound leading to the creation of signature model guitars and effects pedals from the likes of Fender, Gibson, and Vox. However, the image of Jimi Hendrix the person has suffered after his death. More and more his image is related to the pot-head rocker stereotype. His face often finds itself on the fronts of t-shirts featuring marijuana, some even mistakenly identifying him as Bob Marley. These images do not capture the depth of person Hendrix was, so the question must be answered: does mainstream culture really know Jimi Hendrix? How familiar are we with the Jimi Hendrix Experience
Climate Change: The Ultimate Cereal Killer: The Impact of Temperature and Precipitation on Agricultural Yields
Get PDFThe global food supply depends on agricultural production, but as the negative effects of climate change are exacerbated by human activity, how will agriculture need to change to accommodate both climate change and the increasing population? In order to understand what adaptations will be necessary, we perform analysis on the relationship between climate change (temperature and precipitation) and crop yields (barley, rice, and soybean). We take a multinational approach, using ten countries for each model, to see the global impact of climate change on production. Testing many models, we settle on country-specific time trends, eliminating many confounding variables by focusing on climate’s effect on variations from the trend. For all three crops, the analysis shows that temperature has a significant effect on output while precipitation has a negligible effect. The models account for upwards of 96% of the variation from the trend for each crop on a year-by-year basis. In a similar way to how irrigation has altered agriculture\u27s reliance on natural water supplies, we now need to focus on developing technology to counteract the effects of increasing temperatures on crop growth
