    Evidence That Bivalve Burrowing Is Mediated by Serotonin Receptors: Activation of Foot Inflation and Protrusion by Serotonin, Serotonergic Ligands and SSRI-Type Antidepressants in Three Species of Freshwater Bivalve

    Foot inflation and protrusion in bivalve mollusks is part of a sequence of events necessary for burrowing into the substrate. Although this process been observed after exogenous exposure to the neurotransmitter serotonin [5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT)] and by some selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) type antidepressants, no study has shown that foot inflation and protrusion as a precursor to burrowing is under serotonergic control. In order to elucidate the physiological mechanism mediating this response, we tested over 2,000 freshwater bivalves in three species by exposing them to 5-HT, two 5-HT receptor agonists, two receptor antagonists and five antidepressants. Fingernail clams (Sphaerium striatinum), Asian clams (Corbicula fluminea) and unionid mussels (Elliptio complanata) all showed significant foot inflation or foot protrusion when exposed to 5-HT and the serotonergic agonists 8-OH-DPAT and alpha-methyl 5-HT. Some SSRI-type antidepressants (fluoxetine and fluvoxamine) also significantly induced these responses in all three species but were not as potent at the concentrations tested. In S. striatinum and C. fluminea, a 2-h exposure to the 5-HT2 receptor antagonists mianserin and cyproheptadine effectively blocked foot inflation induced by 5-HT and 8-OH-DPAT. The 5-HT receptor mediating this response is thus sensitive to mammalian 5-HT1 and 5-HT2 receptor ligands, supporting the hypothesis that serotonin mediates the initial step in burrowing

    Cultural and Philosophical Beliefs in Tea Poetry

    Tea is a commodity that has greatly changed the course of history. One example of the influence of tea is in poetry. This project analyzes some examples of tea poetry from China and Japan to understand how tea in poetry conveys cultural and philosophical beliefs of given time periods. China and Japan are looked at collectively because their histories are very entwined. In the two Chinese poems, tea is tied to hierarchical relations and the importance of Taoism. In the Japanese poems, tea is greatly related to nature and appreciating simplicity. Three of the four poems are a reaction to living in times of turbulence; thus, tea was used as a means of escape. Lastly, tea is so valued by these poets for its positive connection to physical and mental wellbeing

    The Barriers to Implementation of Artificial Intelligence in Human Resource Management

    The influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in Human Resource Management (HRM) has rapidly become a point of controversy in academic and applied settings. This review will specifically examine the most recent publications on the challenges of implementing these AI tools in the recruitment and selection functions of HR. I identify various issues brought forth by the literature related the adoption of AI-based hiring technology in organizations, including practical costs, bias, data privacy, adverse employee and manager perceptions, and validity and reliability assessment. Suggestions for addressing the concerns are also discussed – namely, the construction of inclusive algorithms, creation of internal and external standards, and comprehensive assessment of validity and reliability. I conclude with recommendations for future research directions, along with additional considerations for organizations interested in incorporating AI-based hiring tools

    Navigating Car Attitudes: An Analysis of Transportation Habits, Environmental Views, and Demographics

    Transportation plays a crucial part in the daily lives of people and society worldwide. Our study examined the transportation habits and environmental attitudes of both Gettysburg College students and individuals across the United States. We conducted a comparative analysis using a sample from students on campus and a national sample collected from the crowdsourcing platform, Amazon’s Mechanical Turk. Additionally, we compared our findings with two similar studies completed by an Environmental Studies capstone nine years ago. We calculated each respondent\u27s environmental score to gauge environmental attitudes, derived explicitly from their answers to five of the 24 survey questions. Next, we developed our research questions: How do transportation habits, demographics, and environmental attitudes compare to the data collected in 2014? How do the transportation habits, demographics, and environmental attitudes compare between Gettysburg College and the United States? To investigate this, we surveyed roughly 10% of the Gettysburg College student population, 236 students, and 188 individuals on Amazon\u27s Mechanical Turk. Our findings reveal that Gettysburg College students exhibit lower environmental concerns than the national sample. Furthermore, our research indicates Mechanical Turk respondents with higher environmental scores are more inclined to consider purchasing an electric vehicle than those with lower scores. Regarding demographics in relation to residency, the Gettysburg College sample reveals a correlation between respondents who reside in a suburban area and a lack of public transportation use. The Mechanical Turk sample also demonstrates a correlation between residing in an urban area and an increased use of public transportation. Future studies should strive for a larger sample size with an equal gender distribution

    Clean Water Saves Lives: Improving Clean Water Access in Yeakpee Town, Liberia

    Civil unrest in Liberia, a West Coast African nation, has caused the destruction of essential infrastructure, particularly water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) systems. As a result, there is a high reliance on unsafe water sources and prevalence of waterborne diseases and health issues, particularly in the Yeakpee Town Community. Inadequate funding has hindered progress, and there are connections between gender inequalities and limited access to clean water. The Clean Water Save Lives project, launched in 2020, aimed to provide sustainable access to clean water in Yeakpee Town community by constructing a water pump with a filtration system. The project aimed to address water injustice by providing fair and equal access, promoting proper garbage disposal, and ensuring efficient management of water infrastructures. It also aimed to address health concerns associated with contaminated water and disparities in water access based on gender. The primary objective of the current project was to provide clean water and foster a healthier living environment in Yeakpee Town by repairing infrastructure and installing new water pumps. This paper provides a summary of the rationale for this work, of the steps needed to complete the work and the outcomes that resulted, and of recommendations for similar projects in the future
