    An action plan designed to combat the fentanyl epidemic, I plan to educate others on the dangers of fentanyl by sharing and debunking common misconceptions and research online in a digestible format. To do so, I plan to create a website and Instagram account that has a global outreach to educate others and alleviate the stigma around substance use and death by fentanyl poisoning. Furthermore, the project is to spread awareness of current efforts and resources in specific areas in South Central PA, such as Adams County, Franklin, and Cumberland Counties

    Periodic, Nonperiodic, and Chaotic Solutions for a Class of Difference Equations with Negative Feedback

    We study the scalar difference equation x(k + 1) = x(k) + (f(x(k - N))) / N, where f is nonincreasing with negative feedback. This equation is a discretization of the well-studied differential delay equation x\u27(t) = f(x(t - 1)). We examine explicit families of such equations for which we can find, for infinitely many values of N and appropriate parameter values, various dynamical behaviors including periodic solutions with large numbers of sign changes per minimal period, solutions that do not converge to periodic solutions, and chaos. We contrast these behaviors with the dynamics of the limiting differential equation. Our primary tool is the analysis of return maps for the difference equations that are conjugate to continuous self-maps of the circle

    Dopamine Injections to the Midbrain Periaqueductal Gray Inhibit Vocal-Motor Production in a Teleost Fish

    Across vertebrates, the midbrain periaqueductal gray (PAG) plays a critical role in social and vocal behavior. Dopaminergic neurotransmission also modulates these behaviors, and dopaminergic innervation of the PAG has been well documented. Nonetheless, the potential role of dopamine in shaping vocal production at the level of the PAG is not well understood. Here, we tested the hypothesis that dopamine modulates vocal production in the PAG, using a well-characterized vertebrate model system for the study of vocal communication, the plainfin midshipman fish, Porichthys notatus. We found that focal dopamine injections to the midshipman PAG rapidly and reversibly inhibited vocal production triggered by stimulation of known vocal-motor structures in the preoptic area / anterior hypothalamus. While dopamine inhibited vocal-motor output, it did not alter behaviorally-relevant parameters of this output, such as vocalization duration and frequency. Dopamine-induced inhibition of vocal production was prevented by the combined blockade of D1- and D2-like receptors but was unaffected by isolated blockade of either D1-receptors or D2-receptors. Our results suggest dopamine neuromodulation in the midshipman PAG may inhibit natural vocal behavior, in courtship and/or agonistic social contexts

    De l’ancrage d’une ville africaine: Abidjan, la mondialisation et le colonialisme tardif en Côte d\u27Ivoire

    The starting point of this article is an observation: the virtual absence of consideration of the long term in Africanist studies on the globalization of African cities. Taking the Abidjan of late colonialism as a case in point, it has been shown that the conurbation has been part of large-scale flows since the 1950s. The creation of its deep-water port and its commissioning facilitated the worldwide circulation of an imaginary that made Abidjan a modern and cosmopolitan metropolis. At the same time, the economic boom associated with the port’s activities attracted a diverse population. Admittedly, interactions between different groups were not free of conflicts and their occupation of space was segregated, but the cosmopolitanism of the city remained very real. Moreover, Abidjan proved to be an African city even though it seemed to be shaped by a world economy dominated by foreign capitalism. Le point de départ de cet article est un constat : la quasi-absence de prise en compte du temps long dans les études africanistes sur la mondialisation des villes africaines. Prenant l’Abidjan du colonialisme tardif comme cas, il est démontré que l’agglomération a été insérée dans les flux à grandes échelles depuis les années 1950. La création de son port en eaux profondes et sa mise en service facilitèrent la circulation mondiale d’un imaginaire qui faisait d’Abidjan une métropole moderne et cosmopolite. Parallèlement, le boom économique lié aux activités du port attira une population venue d’horizons divers. Certes les interactions entre les différents groupes n’étaient pas exemptes de conflits et leur occupation de l’espace était ségréguée, mais le cosmopolitisme de la ville demeurait bien réel. Qui plus est, Abidjan se révéla être une cité africaine même si elle paraissait façonnée par une économie-monde dominée par le capitalisme étranger

    Substituent Effects and Mechanistic Insights on the Catalytic Activities of (Tetraarylcyclopentadienone)Iron Carbonyl Compounds in Transfer Hydrogenations and Dehydrogenations

    (Cyclopentadienone)iron carbonyl compounds are catalytically active in carbonyl/imine reductions, alcohol oxidations, and borrowing hydrogen reactions, but the effect of cyclopentadienone electronics on their activity is not well established. A series of (tetraarylcyclopentadienone)iron tricarbonyl compounds with varied electron densities on the cyclopentadienone were prepared, and their activities in transfer hydrogenations and dehydrogenations were explored. Additionally, mechanistic studies, including kinetic isotope effect experiments and modifications to substrate electronics, were undertaken to gain insights into catalyst resting states and turnover-limiting steps of these reactions. As the cyclopentadienone electron density increased, both the transfer hydrogenation and dehydrogenation rates increased. A catalytically relevant, trimethylamine-ligated iron compound was isolated and characterized and was observed in solution under both transfer hydrogenation and dehydrogenation conditions. Importantly, it was catalytically active in both reactions. Kinetic isotope effect data and initial rates in transfer hydrogenation reactions with 4′-substituted acetophenones provided evidence that hydrogen transfer from the catalyst to the carbonyl substrate occurred during the turnover-limiting step, and NMR spectroscopy supports the trimethylamine adduct as an off-cycle resting state and the (hydroxycyclopentadienyl)iron hydride as an on-cycle resting state. In transfer dehydrogenations of alcohols, the use of electronically modified benzylic alcohols provided evidence that the turnover-limiting step involves the transfer of hydrogen from the alcohol substrate to the catalyst. The trimethylamine-ligated compound was proposed as the primary catalyst resting state in dehydrogenations

    Ludwig Boltzmann’s Bildtheorie has been portrayed as a pre-cursor of the semantic view of theories and as such, the word “Bild” is translated as model. But this anachronistic understanding of Boltzmann’s use of Bilder fails to account for the wide range of roles they play in his understanding of scientific methodology. When the concept of Bild is understood historically in Viennese thought, a much broader sense emerges that leads to the investigation of its use in multiple ways in various contexts in the process of proposing, pursuing, and justifying scientific beliefs

    Political and civic leaders in Lancaster in 1980 had reasons to be optimistic. The city\u27s twenty year program of urban redevelopment had been completed with the construction of a bank and office building on the west side of Lancaster Square. A significant addition to the Fulton Bank building at Penn Square, together with streetscape improvements to the area adjacent to the city\u27s iconic Central Market, gave many residents a sense that Lancaster\u27s downtown was on the upswing. Wesley Shope, president of the Chamber of Commerce, welcomed the announcement of the Fulton\u27s plans as a further indication that the downtown is alive and well. [excerpt
