The Body is a Tool for Remembrance : Healing, Transformation and the Instrumentality of the Body in a North American Sufi Order

    No full text
The Religious Body Imagined examines the ways in which the human body has been imagined, imaged, and discursively produced in particular places, times, and religious traditions. This book brings together representative papers from most of the world’s major traditions and geo-historical locations, and explores the religious body’s various functions, roles, and transformative effects through a range of disciplinary and theoretical lenses (e.g. visual culture, literary, performance and cultural studies, ethnography, space / place, ritual, postcolonial theory and social justice as it pertains to embodiment). Most significantly, it is organized according to novel, thought-provoking thematic foci that advance the field and can be generative for classroom use. Specifically, it includes twelve chapters organized into sections on the Gendered Body, LGBTQ Bodies, Migrating Bodies, Host Bodies, Sensational Bodies, and National Bodies. The Religious Body Imagined contributes new and original research as well as theoretical insights that can substantially help to expand our understanding of the interdisciplinary field of religion and body in general. This particular chapter focuses on the healing practices of North American Muslims of Shadiliyya lineage

Action Plan: Gym Cleanliness at the Jaeger Center

    Get PDF
I have created an action plan to assess current patrons\u27 satisfaction with the cleaning materials provided at the Gettysburg College Jaeger Center, and increase the amount or variety if the need is there. Due to a combination of behaviors and bacteria in the Jaeger Center, gym users are at risk of contracting infections. The objective of this plan is for gym users to feel more empowered and safe in their environment. While there may be individuals who feel like increased disinfecting efforts and supplies are not necessary at the Jaeger Center, what may not be a concern for one person could be a barrier for someone else. The main component of the action plan is a user survey; the objective of the survey is to determine the best result for all parties involved, not just myself. All in all, I hope the conclusion of the action plan will result in a happier, healthier, and safer Gettysburg College community. This poster aims to present the plan in a concise and visually pleasing way, it was presented at the Gettysburg College CAFE Symposium in February 2024

What is the Value of Value Neutrality? Exploring the Tension Between Objective Scholarship and Activist Scholarship

    Get PDF
In recent decades there has been an increase in activist scholarship, a specific type of work where scholars seek to generate knowledge and pedagogies that aim to solve issues of inequality through political change. The emergence of activist scholarship poses a challenge to the long-standing ideal of value neutral scholarship and, as a result, universities and academics are grappling with these competing visions of scholarship. Complete value neutrality within scholarship is impossible yet remains a desirable ideal. But in seeking value neutrality the voices of those who have been historically undermined should not have their thoughts dismissed simply because their work might be classified as too activist. This paper argues, after careful engagement with social science literature, that activist scholarship has a place within academia, but only if people are ready to discuss and engage in constructive discourse. The paper concludes by acknowledging the inherent politicization of academia in today’s society and argues for a nuanced approach that recognizes the role of activism within scholarly discourse with a focus on using factual information in conjunction with constructive dialogue that allows all perspectives to be heard
