Through Our Eyes: A Photography Project Made by Refugee Children

    No full text
Through Our Eyes is an exhibition made up of photographs taken by refugee children who are forced to live in the hotspot of Samos, Greece. It shows us the daily life of refugee people from the inside of the camp. We can see their daily struggles, not like the pictures made by photographers or journalists, but from a different point of view. We can see their daily life through their own eyes. The photos were taken by Mazí students; Mazí is a youth center run by the Still I Rise NGO in Samos.https://cupola.gettysburg.edu/libexhibits/1006/thumbnail.jp

Episode 11: Working on the Frontlines of COVID-19 with Melissa Zook ’94

    No full text
In Episode 11 of Conversations Beneath the Cupola, podcast host, Gettysburg College President Robert W. Iuliano, is joined by family practice physician Melissa Zook ’94. Iuliano and Zook discuss the strain that COVID-19 has put on essential workers and the healthcare system, particularly in rural Kentucky, where Zook works and lives. The episode begins with Zook detailing the journey that led her to being a physician in Kentucky. She says she knew that she wanted to do something to make a difference in the world, and becoming a doctor aligned well with her skills and passions. She credits part of her success and the strong relationships she’s built with her patients to her Gettysburg College liberal arts education. The conversation continues as Zook explains how her work and life in rural Kentucky has shifted due to COVID-19. The counties she serves are among the poorest in the nation, and the area at large struggles with food insecurity. She says the rural environment has helped slow the spread of the virus, so that their already-minimal medical resources are not depleted, but it has also been a challenge to provide medical advice remotely when most of her patients do not have internet or cellular connections. Looking forward, Zook says she hopes that we do not simply go back to our lives and pretend that COVID-19 never happened once it becomes more widely under control—rather, we need to be aware of the lasting risks and effects. The episode concludes with an anecdotal “Slice of Life” told from the president’s perspective. Iuliano builds off of the topic discussed at the end of his conversation with Zook—the significance of remembering to say, “Thank you.” In that spirit, Iuliano shined light on the Gettysburg College Women’s Volleyball team, who participated in what they called “A Week of Gratitude” on their Facebook and Instagram accounts. It was their way to say, “Thank you” to all the essential personnel who are working on the frontlines to keep the country functioning and safe

    Neoliberal Feminism: The Only Approach

    Get PDF
Throughout its history, feminism has manifested in myriad ways; indeed, there are more than ten different categories of feminist thought, all of which seek to define the tenets and objectives of feminism as a movement. These groups include, but are not limited to: radical feminism, eco feminism, third wave feminism, postmodern feminism, liberal feminism, and psychoanalytic feminism. It is important to note that these divisions are not mutually exclusive - one can identify with multiple types of feminist thought at the same time. Given the variety of beliefs attached to the notion of feminism, academic scholarship on the subject is naturally diverse and sometimes contradictory. In fact, both ideological and strategic debates have always existed within the movement, though their content has changed as feminism has evolved and adapted to modern circumstances. Today, a vibrant discourse exists concerning the differences between liberal feminism and neo-liberal feminism. This modern perspective on feminism questions neo-liberal feminism’s necessity as well as its potentially damaging implications. In addition, this conversation also inquires into the relationship between conservatism and feminism, and whether or not it is possible to be a conservative feminist. A case study in which 8 subjects of varying political affiliations were interviewed about these topics suggests support for neo-liberal feminism’s market-based approach as well as an acceptance of a new category of feminist thought: conservative feminis

The Effects of Unauthorized Immigrants on Crime

    Get PDF
The effects of immigrants on crime has been the subject of hostile conversations and bold claims. As anti-immigrant sentiments see an increase in mainstream society, the empirical research suggesting an explanation to such claims are direly needed. Using PEW Research databases, and the States 2016 database in Stata, I evaluate the effects of unauthorized immigrant density of a given region on various crime rates of the aforementioned region. In particular, I assess the violent crime rate, murder crime rate, and property crime rates of states in America. Utilizing confidence intervals, ordinary least squares regression models (OLS), and a number of Stata commands, I predict that an increase in the number of unauthorized immigrants will be linked to a decrease in the crime rate of a given region. Future research will enhance the findings of this study by offering an international scope to this study and controlling for a number of key variables in such studies. My research aims to offer the reader an empirical and quantitative approach to understanding the nature of relations between unauthorized immigration and crime
