Manly Mud: Portrayal of Masculinity in Infantry Units in World War Two as Seen in the Comics of Bill Mauldin
Get PDFThis essay will explore the comics of Bill Mauldin published during World War Two and how masculinity in the infantry was portrayed. Current studies on masculinity in World War Two have focused on soldier’s accounts of the war as well as depictions of soldiers in propaganda. Some work on the effects of comics during the war has also been done but nothing as of yet has combined the two. This paper aims to look at how the comics of Bill Mauldin supported or rejected the model masculine archetype that was developed through propaganda and became a privileged figure in conceptualization of the war. Mauldin’s comics were unique in the depiction of his subject matter and raised criticism from superior officers during the war while generally receiving praise from the rank and file. This paper will also look at how Mauldin portrayed masculinity in his comics and how that fit with the dominant image of soldiers
Pro-life and Pro-choice: What Shapes the Debate over Abortion in America?
Get PDFThe topic of abortion in the United States of America is one that is surrounded by immense political controversy, particularly surrounding the legality of the practice. While some individuals believe in varying levels of freedom of choice, many others believe that the overall practice is unjust and wrong in most, or all circumstances. What are some of the underlying factors that may shape an individual’s stance on abortion? This research paper examines various significant factors such as religiosity, level of education, and age with regards to their potential correlation with an individual’s stance on abortion. By examining this data, this paper intends to answer the question: under what conditions do individuals support abortion rights? Using data from the 2016 National Election Study, this paper analyzes carefully collected polling data, and features relevant figures and tables. In my research, I found support for a significant correlation between religiosity and level of education, and overall support for abortion rights. While I was able to successfully observe some correlation between the factors, I failed to find a significant correlation between an individual’s age and their support for abortion rights. This paper also includes prior research done on these various factors and their correlations with support for abortion rights. Future research should further elaborate on age as well as correlations with other factors such as gender, which I did not account for in my research
Economies of Security: Foucault and the Genealogy of Neoliberal Reason
Get PDFMichel Foucault is well-known for his theorizations of institutional power, normativity, and biopolitics. Less well-known is the fact that Foucault developed his analysis of biopolitics in and through his historical investigation of neoliberalism. Today, while critique of neoliberalism has become a commonplace of humanities discourse, and popular resistance to neoliberalization rocks the southern hemisphere, it remains unclear that the historical specificity of neoliberalism is well-understood. In particular, the relation between classical liberalism and neoliberal governance remains murky in popular debate. As Foucault powerfully illustrates, this relation is far from clear-cut, and neoliberalism is not reducible to a simple extension of the logic of a free market. This paper follows Foucault in tracing the historical emergence of neoliberalism from the classical liberalism of the late seventeenth through early nineteenth century, attending to the continuities, as well as the radical discontinuities between these political forms. Because neoliberalism characterizes the governmental and economic reason and practice of late-modernity, recalling Foucault’s erudite analysis prepares us to understand and engage the social, political, and economic conjunctures reverberating throughout the world today

Click Here Now: The Impact of Color and Size on Advertisements
Get PDFBusinesses and companies are always trying to find the most effective way to advertise their products to create higher click-through rates, increasing the intent to purchase, and consequently raising sales and revenue. This research examines the effect that several different design elements of an online advertisement have on the attitudes or behaviors of consumers. An online survey was sent out to students at Gettysburg College, consisting of pairs of advertisements differing either in color, hue, or size. Participants in the online survey were asked to click on the image that they preferred. All three of these categories had a significant effect on click-through rates on advertisements. Highly-saturated advertisements were significantly preferred over the low-saturated advertisements. There was a significant difference in size preference, but the average preference was evenly split between square and vertical rectangle sizes in the shape category. Warm colors were marginally preferred over cool colors in the images that were used. These findings are important for businesses in order for them to receive the greatest number of clicks on products advertised because those clicks lead to purchases of the product. Further research could also include the examination of other characteristics of advertisements

Blackness and Disability and How Disability is Too Often Forgotten
Get PDFDisability is commonly left out of discussions on intersectional oppression, and this omission and stigmatization of disability does us all a disservice. Black people are more likely to be disabled due to the continuous violence of racism, and black people and disabled people in their status as “other” often find themselves needing to prove their worth in a society that does not see their lives as unconditionally valuable. We cannot see the full picture on issues of oppression such as racism and sexism without considering disability
