Ethical Problems of Enforcing Justice in Death Note and Psycho-Pass Anime

What happens when justice is controlled by a single person or a powerful system? This research explores how Death Note and Psycho-Pass show the dangers of extreme justice. In Death Note, Light Yagami takes the law into his own hands, believing he can create a perfect world by eliminating criminals. In Psycho-Pass, an advanced AI system judges people before they even commit crimes, deciding their fate based on predictions. Both systems aim to reduce crime but end up threatening personal freedom and fairness. By comparing these stories, this study highlights the risks of justice without balance, questioning how much control should be given to authority

Isekai: Discovering Factors that Contributed to its Success and Diving into the Mentality of Contemporary Japanese Citizens

Isekai, an anime and manga genre where characters are transported to another world, has become popular in recent years. This paper examines the factors contributing to this phenomenon, exploring how isekai works resonate with contemporary Japanese citizens. It argues that the genre\u27s appeal lies in its ability to offer escapism from societal pressures, particularly those stemming from economic hardship and a lack of perceived agency. By analyzing important and known isekai works, including Tensei shitara Slime Datta Ken, this paper demonstrates how the genre fulfills a desire of the Japanese for fulfillment and sense of agency. Furthermore, it explores the significant influence of Japanese Role-Playing Games (JRPGs) on isekai, highlighting the incorporation of game-like mechanics and the society\u27s misfit protagonist archetype

Fostering Inclusivity Through Community Arts Programs

The utilization of community arts projects to build diverse and prosperous communities is vital in fostering inclusion rather than isolation within participating communities. Community arts projects can be built to offer individuals a means to connect with their community through self-expression and the celebration of their individuality. This is especially important in giving marginalized groups a voice, such as people with disabilities

Familiarity of Psychiatric Terms Among College Students

Recently, there has been an increase in the usage of psychiatric terminology used among internet users. Terms such as autism, obsessive compulsive disorder, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are thrown around without an understanding of these words and their true meaning. These words are picked up and used in a similar context as any other internet lingo, in an ironic, joking manner, without proper consideration of their origins and meaning. Due to most content on the internet being unmoderated and seemingly endless, users are often faced with misleading information about real clinical disorders. The use of these words follows the linguistic pattern of “concept creep,” during which incompletely understood terminology expands in definition over time; essentially, people keep using terms they do not fully understand in the form of a hyperbole, gradually shifting the original definition of the word. While current research has measured how much these terms are used online, there is not much research targeting their usage in real world conversation. These words are used prominently on campus, which made me wonder what could have led to their popularity

Ancient and Modern Voices of Briseis: A Feminist Critique

    No full text
This article examines from a feminist perspective the representation of Briseis in Homer’s Iliad, Ovid’s Heroides 3, Pat Barker’s The Silence of the Girls, and Madeline Miller’s The Song of Achilles. First, it shows how Homer’s Briseis, in her single speech of lament over Patroclus, critiques masculine heroic values yet, nonetheless, conveys her own lack of importance and agency and reinforces an androcentric, patriarchal, and aristocratic narrative. Second, it analyzes how Ovid, even as he gives Briseis a more developed voice and psychology, removes her Homeric dignity and makes her into a one-note character entirely submissive to her enslaver Achilles. Third, it argues that Barker alone makes Briseis into a rounded person narrating her complex relationships with other women as well as with the men in her life. An addendum contrasts Barker’s painful but authentic portrayal of Briseis with her rather fantastical treatment in Miller’s more popular novel

Deeds That Demons Would Be Ashamed Of: The KKK, Justice, and Bystanders.

Abstract: The Ku Klux Klan used a number of tactics to impact the judicial system of the South, tactics that can be seen in public interviews of Congress’s Report of the Joint Select Committee to Inquire into the Condition of Affairs in the Late Insurrectionary States. Intimidation was a powerful and widespread strategy of the KKK to create fear and inhibit the judicial system. Deception was also key to KKK activities, as many times KKK crimes went unprosecuted due to the secrecy of the offenders. Some popular support for what the KKK stood for and judges who were either ineffective or KKK sympathizers made up a final group that held the judicial system’s power in check. These actions had impacts on the judicial system that resulted in a widespread fear of the KKK, the spread of aggressive amounts of misinformation, people in power corrupted by KKK ideology, and widespread political and racial bias

“A Wise Ending to a Singularly Foolish Beginning”: An Analysis of the Chiriqui Colonization Project

Ambrose Thompson, a Pennsylvanian entrepreneur, aimed to profit from his title to coal-rich lands in Chiriqui by negotiating with several presidential administrations. Thompson’s plan during the Buchanan presidency centered on constructing naval bases and extracting resources for the navy. Although the Buchanan administration withheld their approval of the scheme, Thompson pounced on the opportunity to renew conversations about his colonization project with President Lincoln. This article examines how Thompson targeted Lincoln\u27s racial and political ideologies in letters to launch the project and explores the factors that ultimately molded Lincoln’s decision to abandon the Chiriqui scheme during the Civil War

Battle of Sects? Iran and Saudi Arabia’s Role Conflict

    No full text
How do secular and religious national role conceptions (NRCs) influence interstate rivalry? To explore this, we examine the rivalry between Iran and Saudi Arabia, two theocratic states. Drawing on scholarship that integrates power politics and religion, we examine how instrumental motivations shape religion-based policymaking. Using semantic network and regression analyses on data from eight official Twitter/X accounts of Iranian and Saudi foreign policy officials (2015–2021), we find that both states’ officials strategically use secular and religious NRCs in response to foreign policy roles adopted by their rival. Our findings underscore the coexistence of these NRCs and their selective application in managing rivalry. Methodologically, the study contributes to foreign policy analysis research by employing quantitative semantic analysis of social media data. It also offers a novel lens for understanding Iran-Saudi competition and the broader intersection of religion and foreign policy
