Evaluating mT5 transformer models for ukrainian-english translation
No full textThis study quantitatively investigates the impact of Transformer architecture size on the accuracy of Ukrainian-to-English machine translation using the multilingual mT5 model. The research evaluates three distinct mT5 versions (small, base, and large) by fine-tuning them on a subset of the HPLT v2 corpus. The technical implementation relied on a standard Python-based deep learning stack, utilizing PyTorch and Hugging Face (Transformers, Datasets) libraries for model management and training. Fine-tuning was executed on a high-performance GPU to handle the significant computational load, while inference speed was benchmarked on a typical consumer-grade GPU to reflect real-world deployment scenarios. Translation quality was assessed using the standard BLEU and chrF++ metrics. The results confirm a direct correlation between model size and translation quality, with larger models consistently achieving higher scores on both evaluation metrics. This improved accuracy, however, comes at the cost of significantly increased computational demand for both training and inference. Notably, when benchmarked against other large-scale, general-purpose translation models such as NLLB-200 (distilled-600M and distilled-1.3B), the fine-tuned mT5 variants demonstrated superior performance for Ukrainian-English translation, underscoring the benefits of task-specific adaptation. This study confirms the feasibility of using all three mT5 models for this task on typical computing systems, presenting users with a clear trade-off between desired translation quality and available resources.Цю статтю присвячено кількісному вивченню впливу розміру архітектури Transformer на точність українсько-англійського машинного перекладу з використанням моделі mT5. Досліджено ефективність роботи моделей mT5 різних розмірів (small, base, large) щодо часу навчання, часу генерації перекладів і якості перекладу, оціненої метриками BLEU та chrF++. Результати показують, що більші моделі mT5 демонструють вищу якість перекладу, але потребують значно більше обчислювальних ресурсів. Результати дослідження підтверджують доцільність застосування моделей mT5 для українсько-англійського перекладу, навіть на типових обчислювальних системах

About Lazar Baranovych’s Kyiv-Mohyla rhetoric course
No full textThe paper introduces the course of rhetoric by Lazar Baranovych, taught at the Kyiv-Mohyla College, most likely in the academic year 1648/1649, and provides basic source information about the course of poetry by Teodosii Vasylevych-Baievskyi, preserved in the same manuscript codex. The latter course was taught in the academic year 1647/1648. Now the record is kept in Irkutsk. As for today, Baranovych’s work is the second oldest of the known Kyiv-Mohyla rhetoric courses that have survived. This rhetoric has a distinct practical orientation: in fact, itis a commented anthology of speeches arranged in accordance with the traditional genres and themes of demonstrative eloquence in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The purpose of the article is to attribute the courses and briefly characterize the content of Baranovych’s rhetoric course. Since there are no dates on the title pages of either work, provenance and historical facts mentioned in the literary samples help establish the years in which the courses were taught. Among the exemplary texts of Lazar Baranovych’s rhetoric course, there are many orations addressed to well-known historical figures, such as Petro Mohyla, Sylvestr Kosov, Adam Kysil, Jerzy Ossoliński, Stanisław Koniecpolski, Samuel Korecki, and others. These contemporary speeches were actually delivered or at least prepared for being used in real life circumstances. The choice of materials for the course characterizes the socio-cultural orientations of the professor and, to some extent, the entire Kyiv-Mohyla community at the beginning of the war led by Bohdan Khmelnytskyi. The collection of speeches shows that professor Baranovych was a fully loyal resident of the Polish-Lithuanian ommonwealth. Concerned about the fate of Orthodoxy, Baranovych also demonstrates a respectful attitude toward representatives of the Catholic confession. Interestingly enough, the Moscow Tsardom and the Muscovites, which would be later chosen as allies by the Ukrainian hetman, are presented in the course’s speeches as a distinctly hostile force.Стаття вводить до наукового обігу курс риторики Лазаря Барановича, прочитаний у Києво-Могилянському колегіумі, найімовірніше, в 1648/1649 навчальному році. На сьогодні це другий за давністю з відомих могилянських курсів риторики, що збереглися. Курс Барановича має виразне практичне спрямування: по суті, це коментована антологія промов, розташованих відповідно до традиційних жанрів і тем демонстративного красномовства Речі Посполитої. Рукописний кодекс із риторикою Барановича містить також києво-могилянський курс поетики Теодосія Василевича-Баєвського з 1647/1648 н. р. Завданням статті є атрибуція матеріалів рукопису та коротка характеристика змісту Барановичевого курсу риторики
