    CORP: An algorithm to prevent unauthorized data modification using collaborative nodes

    The COllaborative Redundant Processing (CORP) algorithm is an approach to prevent unauthorised modification of data in a decentralised and distributed computing environment. Built on Ki-Nga-Kopuku, a distributed and decentralised security model for Cloud Computing, where redundant nodes are functionally identical, the nodes collectively maintain consistency and integrity of processed data. If a single node is compromised and acts maliciously to modify data, other nodes detect the action. CORP extends the functionality of Ki-Nga-Kopuku and is developed mainly for a Cloud Computing context, but the concept can be used in any distributed and decentralised environment to provide consistency, integrity, and availability

    Linearity in popular song

    “Linearity in Popular Song.” In On Popular Music and Its Unruly Entanglements, eds. Nick Braae and Kai Arne Hansen, 83-101. New York: Palgrave Macmillan, 2019. This chapter addresses temporality in popular music, with a particular focus on hearing and interpreting notions of linearity in songs. Drawing on the work of Jonathan Kramer, I argue that linear (or goal-directed) time can be understood as arising from melodic, arrangement, lyrical, and performance elements of a song. This is demonstrated with respect to five songs by Queen, Prince, and Rod Stewart. In the final analytical section, I introduce a new term—the denouement coda—for a closing section of a song that introduces new musical material, and, in some way, provides a metaphorical or lyrical comment on the preceding sections

    Assessing Group Project for Fluids Power and Advanced Fluid Mechanics Paper

    The Fluids Power and Advanced Fluid Mechanics paper is a Level 7 paper for the Bachelor of Engineering and Technology following Sydney accord. Its graduate attributes are set by the accrediting body, Engineering New Zealand. One key attribute is to: “Function effectively as an individual, and as a member or leader in diverse teams” It is a challenge to teach and assess this attribute in a group project setting. We have designed a project-based class and assessment for this paper to enable students to learn and work in a team-based setting solving real-world problems, using modern Engineering CAD tools. We investigate how this graduate attribute may be effectively taught and assessed when students are functioning as part of a team. PURPOSE OR GOAL The main purpose of this study is to investigate how to teach and assess, as accurately as possible and in a way that does not increase monitoring costs on the part of instructors, the contribution of each student as an individual and as a member or leader their diverse project team. APPROACH OR METHODOLOGY/METHODS This paper investigates teaching and assessment of group participation and demonstration of the graduate attribute both in the classroom, and in a group project context. First, the design of a small intensive Project-Based Learning (PjBL) class is described, and the process by which this design allows the instructor to foster directly participation and contribution towards the group’s deliverable is characterised. Then, a PjBL assignment is described, and the means by which an instructor can clearly assess the level of intra-group interaction and team-based contribution to the assignment is constructed. ACTUAL OR ANTICIPATED OUTCOMES Both cases demonstrate how an instructor can effectively teach and accurately assess group participation without relying on measures of self- and peer- assessment of others’ work. CONCLUSIONS/RECOMMENDATIONS/SUMMARY The cases described in this paper challenge perceptions that teaching and accurate assessment of students’ participation in group work must entail more work on the part of the instructor. PjBL teaching classes are an excellent place to foster and develop teamwork skills. Furthermore, students’ fears can be allayed that group projects are inadequate reflections of students’ learning if most of the work is done by one student: it turns out students perform poorly at presenting or understanding their team members’ work. This does however also challenge the theory that group assignments result in students’ understanding the value of teamwork since less than half the class could effectively describe what their fellow team members had done. This suggests PjBL classes may be a better place to foster such teamwork

    Performance characteristics of a winning polo team

    Polo is played globally, and is contested by two teams of four players on horseback. Despite popularity, there is little academic literature assessing Polo players, and what constitutes successful Polo performance. One reason for this may be Polo’s unique player rating system, the handicap, which quantifies individuals and teams’ level of play. We sought to characterise the play of a tournament winning high-goal polo team (KPF) using percent and raw differences between teams using a customised matrix, which was designed with input from international polo players. Secondly, we assessed the association between player handicap and success rates of key performance metrics. KPF won five of seven games played, with forehand middle (FHM) being the least variable shot (-4 to 5% success rate), whereas long backhand shots were the most variable (-50 to 45% success rate). Fewer turnovers were conceded than the opposition in all games won, and in four out of the five winning games, more penalties were awarded to KPF than their opponents. At an individual level, FHM was significantly correlated to player handicap (0.562, Large: p<0.05). Player handicap was also moderately correlated with backhand middle (0.33), backhand long (0.361), and ride off (0.362) success rates. Turnovers and penalties awarded confer clear attacking and goal-scoring opportunities. FHM, backhand shots and ability to contest for the ball (ride off) are key performance metrics, positively associated with player handicap, and higher handicap players demonstrate greater success rates and or less variability than those with lower handicaps. However, variability within players of the same handicap is evident, suggesting subjectivity of the handicapping system

    Reflection on the flipped teaching and student teaching practice

    In the presentation, the author will introduce his implementation of the flipped teaching for engineering students in Wintec. The reflection includes four parts: description, reflection, thinking and application. by comparison the pass rates in Mechanics (DE4302) from 2013 to 2017, the results shows that the application of the flipped teaching has a positive effect on students' learning. The presentation also shares some tips for the flipped teaching

    The Cacophonometer is the easiest way to measure how bird populations are changing. This device makes periodic sound recordings and uploads them to the cloud, noting the time and location. These recordings will be analysed to detect the volume of birdsong and how it changes over time, giving you an objective measure of the impact of predator control or reforestation

    Risks of using naïve approaches to Artificial Intelligence: A case study

    In recent years, there has been a push in the Artificial intelligence (AI) field to simplify the application of machine learning so that its use can be more widely adopted. While this reduces barriers to entry for AI and machine learning, they also introduce the risk that persons or organisations with insufficient expertise will have the ability to use these systems to make decisions that have a significant impact on society based on discriminatory factors. Implementers and decision-makers need to have a good understanding of the features that the system might use and infer from to make predictions, and how these can affect their stakeholders. In this paper, we outline the risks of this phenomena occurring in a specific case – the application of machine learning applied to secondary school student grades. We demonstrate that naïve approaches can have unanticipated consequences and can generate predictions based on discriminatory factors such as gender or race. The impact of the application of such flawed decisions in matters such as awards, scholarships etc. could entrench detrimental bias in the education systems

    Deconstructed echoes: Echoes from an uncertain reef

    Sound is an important communicative medium for reef species, such as clown fish, snapping shrimp, and migrating whales. The quality and texture of a reef’s soundscape is also an indicator of reef health. As coral reefs around the world are deteriorating, their soundscapes are getting more simple and quiet. We approached a number of international artists for their response to the uncertain future of the Great Barrier Reef. Each was asked to engage with a recording from Shark Mountain at Norman Reef recorded by Matthew Buttacavoli as part of his doctoral research. Each found a quiet urgency in this recording and responded in kind. The resulting sound piece, Echoes, features the work of artists from Aotearoa New Zealand, Iceland and Denmark who collectively remind us of the place of the Great Barrier Reef in global ecological imaginaries. Listening to Echoes it is possible to detect at least four interrelated themes: contact, globalism, temporality and and the role of the creativity and the senses in focusing our attention. Jalving’s poem invites us to come and become part of a reefy world, not separate from it. Purdy takes us further to explore the subaquatic world. Jalving’s Danish poem and Yr’s piece featuring an Icelandic child reading climate change articles reminds the listener that of the global concern for this World Heritage Site. Yr’s child reminds us once again that the future of the Reef is also the future for the next generation and so on. Mayall’s piece continues this play with time as he stretches and pulls at the sound itself. The original recording by Buttacavoli closes the cycle. With imaginations primed by the first four pieces, this final sound segment invites listeners to attend to the unadorned sizzle of snapping shrimp, the grunt of reef fish, the activity of divers, and the whirl of the boat engine.     Influenced by artists such as, Peter Doig and Kaye Donachie, my landscape paintings depict pastoral and provincial scenes and situations that mingle recollections, historical events, tender encounters or furtive activities My work is backgrounded by traditions of narrative painting and developments in a new romanticism which proposes to make, “the finite into the infinite, while recognising that it can never be realized. The romantic attitude hovers between attempt and inevitable failure with the unified pluralism of sincerity and irony (Vermeulen & Akker 2010). “…, the (New Romantic) scene is characterized by a quite emphatic renaissance of the traditional work which manifests itself not only in recurrent revivals of painting. Numerous young artists draw unerringly on the spirit of Romanticism, on the longing for the paradisiacal, beautiful, and magical. With this development, the sense of shame at serious pictures and visual pleasures seems to have been definitely overcome”. April 27, 2004 - Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt - Ideal Worlds – New Romanticism in Contemporary Art Olafur Eliasson points out, “I am not afraid of the sublime...We must not be afraid of claiming a degree of ownership for it. We should allow something sublime to be right next to us in the gutter.” The Point is part of a series of work, River Majesty, in which scenes are observed from the water, during trips along the Waikato River between Hamilton/Kirikiriroa and Taupiri. Source material is manipulated with non-real colour and fluent gesture to bend and amplify scenery. Disquieting occurrences are often inserted to upset the idyllic. My motivations derive from an interest in regional histories and identities and how traditions of painting from expressionism, new romanticism, impressionism, to magic realism can be drawn from and melded to produce narratives that reflect my attitudes and experiences in the land that are somewhat in tension or even contradictory. My enjoyment of a stroll down a narrow road that traverses the Hauraki Plains that I’ll return to tomorrow to watch a burn-out competition
