    Sources of research topic generation: Lessons from proficient accounting, economics, and communication researchers

    Journal publications are an output of research though there is little research into the process that led to the outcome and the lack of discussion and debate surrounding the process leads to an allure of mysticism. This paper studies the norms of research through investigating how successful business researchers choose their research topics. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with business researchers. Generating topic ideas by successful researchers were separated into two general sources: ‘Professional Capacity’ and ‘Individual Motivators’. The main Professional Capacity sources were students and previous research. These Professional Capacity sources can be used by an established researcher. The most valuable Individual Motivator is to read. Researchers also revealed that they chose topics they found intrinsically interesting rather than topics that would necessary have a significant impact on the literature. To achieve research and publication success, it is important to make research part of your routine and read, attend conferences, submit your work for review, and persevere

    Surface irregularities in titanium marine parts formed by the particulate injection moulding process.

    High-alloy steels with the addition of > 10 % chromium are known as stainless steels and due to their increased strength and oxidation resistance are used for food production equipment, in the chemical industry and in the marine environments. A problem within some marine environments is that corrosion still occurs. The corrosion still occurs despite the alloying content because of high mechanical stress a result of high loading. This is particularly seen in structural applications and load points. While this may be acceptable within industries such as commercial fishing and container transportation it is not desirable in luxury vessels or high-performance sports vessels. To eliminate the effects of stress on these components materials with greater oxidation resistance are recommended one of which is titanium metal. Not only does titanium metal have greater oxidation resistance than marine alloyed chromium steels it also has lower density and higher yield strength which enable lower weight and lower material utilisation. In this study a structural hold down component was designed and produced using the particulate injection moulding (PIM) process. The material of choice was titanium due not only to the material properties mentioned previously but also due to the desire to create custom made components for a state-of-the-art marine vessel, Earthrace 2. The component was produced using the particulate injection moulding (PIM) process. This fabrication technique was used due to several efficiencies offered by the process. It supports materials sustainability of the powder metallurgy approach by using only the volume of metal required to create the necessary part geometries (material utilisation). It has high reproducibility which is desirable for high volume of parts, it produces isotropic material properties and where necessary can be used to provide unique alloys not possible from wrought material. The original design was modified to better utilise the titanium properties and using a polymer mould tool green parts were produced with green machining used to mark the parts with logos and identifiers and apply final features. The tests were never completed as the break was always the lifting shackle used to connect mounts to the universal testing instrument. The load shackles had working capacity six times that required for the mounts. To this end, the mounts were redesigned and a material saving of some 40 % was realised. The new components, therefore, having a thinner wall section and a corresponding reduction in loading capability is expected. One unexpected result of reducing the wall thickness was seen on the upper surface of the mount known as surface bloom. It can be seen during plastic moulding of single-phase commodity polymers as a result of changes in the polymer density, due to shear stresses and irregularities of turbulent flow. The PIM process, however, uses a two-phase (polymer carrier and the titanium particles) metallic blend or feedstock that behaves in a different manner to a polymer. The literature suggests the surface bloom is a result of a separation between the two phases, but the preliminary findings show little evidence of this within the sectioned profile. It is this phenomenon that is being investigated and will be presented in relation to melt flow modelling, mechanical simulation and visual analysis. The sections are subjected to mechanical testing and it is these results combined with SEM imaging that shows in greater detail a more likely scenario

    The professional use of social media by social workers in Aotearoa New Zealand

    The novelty of social media provides a "wide open" space for social work research. Multiple questions are accumulating about practice relevance, professionalism, technical and ethical competence. Social work ethicist, Frederic Reamer (2017), describes the advent of social media as warranting our "explicit and sustained attention," and depicts the task ahead as "the newest frontier in social work's noble efforts to keep pace with the times and develop ethically-informed innovations to meet the needs of vulnerable people and communities" (p. 10). There is an urgent call for research and for social work students to be taught a critical approach to social media which "encompasses benefits and challenges that create ethical issues and have impacts that cannot be understood in simple, binary, or linear ways" (Boddy & Dominelli, 2017, p. 3). The first phase of this exploratory, mixed methods study of Aotearoa New Zealand social workers and social media was initiated in 2013. The findings from analysis of 342 online survey responses showed a reticence amongst participants about the value of social media, citing concern about privacy, security and ethical issues as primary barriers to its professional use. Eleven key informants were interviewed concurrently to generate deeper insight into these daily practice realities. These participants, predominantly experienced users of social media as professionals, and/or leaders across various fields of practice offered ideas about the relevance of social media to the profession, its value in networking, generation of knowledge, communication and strategies for overcoming barriers to effective use. Participants in focus groups held in phase two of the project were asked to consider the source and extent of their knowledge about social media, what more they wanted to know and how they could best develop this knowledge. The creative energy of these groups sparked ideas for professional development and grassroots application of practice principles, skills, and cultural knowledge to professional social media use. The general enthusiasm for social media, especially for social action, was tempered with deep caution about using social media in managerial, risk-averse practice environments. A critical analysis of all data raised questions about the link between theory and practice, opening scope for deeper understanding of the lived experience of social media use in practice. Participants called for leadership, greater critical understanding of social media in society, ethical guidance and the establishment of 'ground up' best practice examples. Findings highlight how motivation behind, and knowledge about, social media use is fundamentally connected with social work identity. They highlight the extent to which forces of neoliberalism weave their way into attitudes and ethical decision making about social media, and how the dichotomy of the promise and perils of social media continues to confound, confuse and limit us in our development of expertise as a profession. The findings also suggest that social workers have the capacity and confidence to create a unique relationship with social media based on social work principles, practice wisdom and the unique cultural attributes of Aotearoa New Zealand

    Traversing the journey from student teacher to full teacher certification

    This research aims to investigate the journey of student teachers as they complete their program of study and begin their careers in the teaching profession. There is little documented evidence of what, if any, impact an initial teacher education program can have on teachers as they move through the profession – from student to newly qualified teacher to fully certificated teacher. This project will explore this relationship and how graduates call on the knowledge acquired in their initial teacher education qualification to inform their practice as teachers. The Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand is currently undertaking a project examining Future Focussed Initial Teacher Education this project will complement this work as well as the Ministry of Education's Draft Strategic Plan for Early Learning. The aims of both of these pieces of work are to provide quality learning outcomes for all children and effective teaching strategies. This project will explore these aims and the relationship between an initial teacher education program. Abstracts—Day 1: Wednesday, July 3rd ● 33 The research is a longitudinal study with three phases. The first phase investigated graduates perceptions of preparedness to teach and as they enter the workforce how their field-based initial teacher education training has contributed to this. The next two phases will follow the newly qualified teachers as the transverse the induction and mentoring towards full certification. In these two phases of this research the participants will become teacher researchers

    Experience: Quality benchmarking of datasets used in software effort estimation

    Data is a cornerstone of empirical software engineering (ESE) research and practice. Data underpin numerous process and project management activities, including the estimation of development effort and the prediction of the likely location and severity of defects in code. Serious questions have been raised, however, over the quality of the data used in ESE. Data quality problems caused by noise, outliers, and incompleteness have been noted as being especially prevalent. Other quality issues, although also potentially important, have received less attention. In this study, we assess the quality of 13 datasets that have been used extensively in research on software effort estimation. The quality issues considered in this article draw on a taxonomy that we published previously based on a systematic mapping of data quality issues in ESE. Our contributions are as follows: (1) an evaluation of the “fitness for purpose” of these commonly used datasets and (2) an assessment of the utility of the taxonomy in terms of dataset benchmarking. We also propose a template that could be used to both improve the ESE data collection/submission process and to evaluate other such datasets, contributing to enhanced awareness of data quality issues in the ESE community and, in time, the availability and use of higher-quality datasets

    Applying Process Mining in a Multilevel Variants Analysis on Collaborative Sales to Cash Activities

    Organizations invest many resources and time for improving business process and cooperative work. Traditional process mapping requires a lot of effort to diagnostic performance issues and to understand the main causes of losses. Process mining emerges as a new discipline focused on analyzing process based on real event data aimed to automate discovery of process models; to check conformance and to extend models performance or resource analysis. This paper combines a discovery process mining and a process variant clustering algorithm, focused on obtaining knowledge for a top-down navigation concerning performance cause analysis. An applied industry case was conducted to verify the proposed techniques using a dataset extracted from an ERP. From the results obtained, it was possible to identify the main performance losses segregated by process variants

    Analysis of morepork vocalizations recorded using a permanently located mobile phone

    The purpose of this work included the annotation of audio recordings of bird vocalizations to be used to train a machine learning algorithm to automatically detect bird calls. In addition, this work was intended to demonstrate the ability of The Cacophony Project’s mobile phone based ‘Bird Monitor’ for on-going monitoring of bird vocalizations.This work is important because it forms part of The Cacophony Project’s strategy to provide a low cost and robust means of collecting bird vocalization information to help determine the effectiveness of pest control activities. The main results show that the Bird Monitor does reliably capture bird calls over an extended period and can be used to create many annotated recordings from a real situation. It is concluded that the approach of choosing the distinct call of the Morepork as an entry into the area of automatic bird call counting was valid

    Modelling of Firm Offer from Combined Wind and Hydro Generations

    This paper analyses the impact of a firm combined offer by wind and small hydro generators located in the river chain, with a view to address the intermittency of wind generators. Both generations are dispatchable and cleared against their offer prices. They offer a firm, hourly-schedule (WH schedule) for 24 hours ahead of real-time operation to an auction based locational marginal price (LMP) market with other generators offering to meet the system loads. The model network consists of other generators and loads at different buses. The scheduled power is taken off at a predetermined bus, as a load at the bus. This schedule must be met by the wind and hydro combined generations. If necessary, a notional thermal generation is available at a considerable higher price to meet the schedule, at the off-take point. The objective is to minimise the total supply cost for 24 hours and examine LMPs and constraint-on costs while respecting the given WH schedule, nodal power balance constraint, generation limits, branch flow and other limits. Discussion is based on New Zealand (NZ) Electricity Market rules, where generators are self-committed into the into the market. Three scenarios are studied, and the results presented
