    A coloured petri net approach to model and analyze safety-critical interactive systems

    To gain confidence in safety-critical interactive systems, formal modelling and analysis plays a vital role. The aim of this paper is to use Coloured Petri Nets to model and analyze safety-critical interactive systems. We present a technique to construct a single Coloured Petri Net model of the user interface, interaction and functionality of safety-critical interactive systems and then analyze the achieved Coloured Petri Net model using a state space analysis method. There are several reasons for using Coloured Petri Nets. Coloured Petri Nets provides a graphical epresentation and hierarchical structuring mechanism, and a state space verification technique, which allows querying the state space to investigate behaviours of a system. There are several tools that supports Coloured Petri Nets including the CPN Tool which helps in building CPN models and allows simulation and analysis using state spaces. The technique to model and analyze safety-critical interactive systems is illustrated using a simplified infusion pump example

    The spatiotemporal characteristics of 0–24-Goal Polo

    Global positioning systems (GPS) have recently been shown to reliably quantify the spatiotemporal characteristics of Polo, with the physiological demands of Polo play at low- and high-goal levels also investigated. This study aims to describe the spatiotemporal demands of Polo across 0–24 goal levels. A player-worn GPS unit was used to quantify distance, speed and high-intensity activities performed. Data were divided into chukkas and five equine-based speed zones, grouped per cumulative player handicap and assessed using standardized mean differences. Average distance and speed per chukka increased in accordance with cumulative player handicap, with the magnitude of differences being trivial–large and trivial–very large, respectively. Differences between time spent in high-intensity speed zones (zones 4 and 5) show a linear increase in magnitude, when comparing 0 goal Polo to all other levels of play (Small–Very Large; 6–24 goals, respectively). High-intensity activities predominantly shared this trend, displaying trivial–large differences between levels. These findings highlight increased cardiovascular, anaerobic and speed based physiological demands on Polo ponies as playing level increases. Strategies such as high-intensity interval training, maximal speed work and aerobic conditioning may be warranted to facilitate this development and improve pony welfare and performance

    From secondary to tertiary level, educational development relies comprehensively on teaching elements and strategies, it is about learning to think and act in ways that will apply safety measures to the future wellbeing of our students. Learner centered teaching not only includes authentic and modernised teaching, but it includes a mix of planning, continual management, and measure changes of learning (Harper, Chen, & Yen, 2004). This paper presents range of efficient teaching pedagogies with a reflection element, which are also supported with adult learning theories to standardise and prove their effectiveness globally. PURPOSE To apply and measure the effectiveness of innovative learning and teaching pedagogies by analysing student performances in Wintec, New Zealand. In addition to that, to attain qualitative and standardised teaching and learning approaches. APPROACH Illustrating the most significant theme of innovation in learning and teaching. The paper has taken the approach describing and applying five major teaching pedagogies such as flipped classroom, inquiry-based learning, active learning, differentiated learning and reflective teaching. For justification, it also comprises of Adult Learning Theories (ALT) such as social and situated learning, social constructivism and behaviourist theory. These ALTs are sourced from the book, University Teaching in Focus by L. Hunt & D. Chalmers, 2012. RESULTS The preliminary analysis revealed that overall student participation has risen with positive feedback and acceptance of the modernised learning and teaching environment. All courses utilised and established these innovative teaching pedagogies with range of learner centered activities described in the research paper. These innovative pedagogies resulted in effective learnings with improved summative grades and increased student participation in formative assessments. Overall, the authors of this research found benefits of students leading the sessions, becoming problem solvers and developing employability skills. CONCLUSIONS Overall, the analysis of the results showed that learner centered teaching is accomplished from the approach of applying innovative teaching pedagogies. The use of these pedagogies aligned efficiently with the development of student adoption to become competent in the new teaching environment. Also, the students’ feedback demonstrated positive outlook towards adapting this shift to modernised teaching

The movie was later adapted into a musical with music and lyrics by Pasek & Paul and a book by Peter Duchan. The show was directed by Joe Mantello and choreographed by Christopher Gattelli. This production was produced by Bold Theatre, directed by David Sidwell, with Musical Direction from Nick Braae at the Meteor Theatre in Hamilton, NZ

    Comparative running demands of under 18, under 21 and senior regional field hockey tournaments

    The purpose of this study was to quantify match play running demands of field hockey players in relation to playing level and position. Distance covered was measured on 30 regional field hockey players (under 18, under 21 and senior) during 18 open and age-group national competition tournament games. Total distance (TD), high-intensity running (HIR; distance ≥15km.hr), low-intensity running (LIR; distance ≤14.9km.hr), high-intensity acceleration (HI-ACC; acceleration ≥3m.s-2) and high-intensity deceleration (HI-DEC; deceleration ≥3m.s-2) were assessed global positioning system (GPS) technology. Data was analysed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and post hoc Bonferroni correction (p ≤ 0.05). Under 18 strikers (1839.79 ± 456.85) and midfielders (1501.56 ± 559.42) showcased significantly higher HIR distance than the under 21 strikers (1211.08 ± 458.49) and midfielders (1064.00 ± 432.69) respectively. Senior midfielders (5961.55 ± 964.05) covered significantly higher LIR distance in comparison to both under 18 (5046.91 ± 852.14) and 21 midfielders (5126.83 ± 376.24), more Hi-ACC efforts (194.61 ± 31.11) than under 21 midfielders (164.94 ± 21.64) and more HI-DEC efforts (73.12 ± 18.45) than under 18 midfielders (55.21 ± 13.42). Under 18 strikers showcased significantly less HI-ACC efforts (137.88 ± 19.17) than senior (168.11 ± 25.16) and under 21 strikers (173.25 ± 18.29) and less HI-DEC efforts (61.21 ± 12.17) than the under 21 strikers (82.50 ± 21.01). Senior defenders had significantly more HI-ACC efforts (169.35 ± 38.56) than under 18 defenders (140.45 ± 33.39). These results show that the different playing levels and positions in field hockey are sufficiently different to warrant specialized, position-specific, conditioning training as part of an informed long-term athletic development plan

    Oral application of L-menthol in the heat: From pleasure to performance

    When menthol is applied to the oral cavity it presents with a familiar refreshing sensation and cooling mint flavour. This may be deemed hedonic in some individuals, but may cause irritation in others. This variation in response is likely dependent upon trigeminal sensitivity toward cold stimuli, suggesting a need for a menthol solution that can be easily personalised. Menthol’s characteristics can also be enhanced by matching colour to qualitative outcomes; a factor which can easily be manipulated by practitioners working in athletic or occupational settings to potentially enhance intervention efficacy. This presentation will outline the efficacy of oral menthol application for improving time trial performance to date, either via swilling or via co-ingestion with other cooling strategies, with an emphasis upon how menthol can be applied in ecologically valid scenarios. Situations in which performance is not expected to be enhanced will also be discussed. An updated model by which menthol may prove hedonic, satiate thirst and affect ventilation will also be presented, with the potential performance implications of these findings discussed and modelled. Qualitative reflections from athletes that have implemented menthol mouth swilling in competition, training and maximal exercise will also be included
