Enough: Soundscapes
As young man struggles with depression, he finds despair through the physical and mental turmoil it causes himself and hope through the support from his family and friends.
Choreographed and performed by Mike Sorensen (Bodies Entwined, The Machine) and based on Sorensen’s own struggle with mental health issues, Enough is an intimate and moving performance weaving together a myriad of different artistic disciplines.
Featuring spoken word composed by Michael Moore, music by Jeremy Mayall and a cast of dancers from around Aotearoa, Enough is a unique insight into one person’s experience with depression (an experience shared by so many people in Aotearoa).

Motivation and Engagement: Māori and Pasifika learners
CONTEXT
Motivation and engagement in the classroom are essential to help learner’s achievement their potential. Teachers play a key role in creating interest, energy and drive in learners and motivating them to engage with the material (Martin, 2006). Māori and Pasifika learners face challenges in classrooms, which are only recently being recognised, and we need to provide culturally safe spaces for them. In diverse classrooms, teachers’ relationships with learners (Tätaiako) is vital to support learners’ engagement.
PURPOSE OR GOAL
The purpose of this research is to reflect on four academics’ attempts to create culturally safe classrooms. It will assess what worked, and what did not, in terms of classroom context and creative learning activities to motivate and engage learners.
APPROACH
This research based on the approaches we have considered in improving Motivation and Engagement of students (Both Māori and Pasifika) by implementing teaching and learning instructions such as student-centred learning (flipped classroom), critical thinking, student engagement and motivational inquiry-based learning while working in groups. Bloom’s critical thinking are the main foundations of our Learning and Teaching approaches. We have considered group assignments and group project based tasks to access or justify our approaches.
ACTUAL OR ANTICIPATED OUTCOMES
We anticipate that implementing more student-centred, critical thinking, inquiry-based learning approaches while working in groups will improve motivation and engagement of learners. All approaches we have considered for our learners in the classroom will create more confident, skilled and motivated learners, including amongst Māori and Pasfika. We are interested to see if there are additional benefits to Maori and Pacific learners, above the general cohort, from these approaches.
CONCLUSIONS
During this research, we have noticed that by implementing all these approaches, make a lot of difference in engagement of learners in the classroom and increase their motivation. We have noticed critical thinking is an essential skill in the cognitive development and motivation of students and student-centred approach in teaching help a lot to engage more by having good communication with each other. In future, we as a teacher can support New Zealand Māori Language in our sessions in our greetings and opening and closing of sessions

Thermal Power Stirling - Green Heat Engine
Primary energy consumption growth averaged 2.2% in 2017, up from 1.2% in 2016. Natural gas accounted for the largest increase in energy consumption followed by renewable energy and oil. Global oil growth averaged 1.7 million barrels per day, natural gas consumption rose by 96 million cubic metres and coal consumption increased by 25 tonnes of oil equivalent and power generation rose by 2.8%. This caused the Carbon emissions to grow by 1.6% after little or no growth from 2014 to 2016. Carbon emissions pose a great threat to the planet as they are the main contributors to greenhouse effects and global warming. To minimise this, a great deal of money and research is being put into renewable and green sources of energy. One of these renewable sources of energy is solar energy. A Stirling engine provides a cheap and easy way of converting this solar energy into electrical energy while also providing a higher efficiency than gasoline or diesel engines. The aim of this project is to design and build a Stirling Engine which produces electricity using sunlight as the main source of heat energy. The working fluid for this project would be air at atmospheric pressure and the electricity generated would be sufficient enough to do some useful work and would present this system as an alternative form of environmentally friendly electricity generator

The spatiotemporal characteristics of 0 – 24 goal polo
Global positioning systems (GPS) have recently been shown to reliably quantify the spatiotemporal characteristics of Polo, with the physiological demands of Polo play at low and high goal levels also investigated. This study aimed to describe the spatiotemporal demands of Polo across 0 – 24 goal levels. A player worn GPS unit was used to quantify distance, speed and high intensity activities performed. Data was divided into chukkas and five equine-based speed zones, grouped per cumulative player handicap and assessed using standardised mean differences. Average distance and speed per chukka increased in accordance with cumulative player handicap, with the magnitude of differences being Trivial – Large and Trivial – Very Large, respectively. Differences between time spent in speed zones 4 and 5 show a linear increase in magnitude, when comparing 0 goal Polo to all other levels of play (Small – Very Large; 6 – 24 goals, respectively). High intensity activities predominantly shared this trend, displaying Trivial – Large differences between levels. These findings highlight the increasingly demanding cardiovascular, anaerobic and speed-based needs of Polo ponies as playing level increases. Strategies such as high intensity interval training, maximal speed work and aerobic conditioning may be warranted to facilitate this development and improve pony welfare and performance
The effectiveness of progressive and traditional coaching strategies to improve sprint and jump performance across varying levels of maturation within a general youth population
Literature pertaining to youth development has identified the importance of understanding the physical, intellectual and emotional needs of adolescents prior to, during, and after their peak height velocity (PHV) period. The purpose of this study was to compare the use of a ‘traditional’ and ‘progressive’ coaching style to train a general male youth population to improve sprint and jump performances whilst assessing enjoyment to comment on long-term application. Maximal sprint times, sprint kinematics, unilateral jump distances and repetitive tuck jump scores were measured alongside anthropometric variables to characterise performance. The results revealed significant (p < 0.05) pre/post differences in anthropometric variables across all maturation groups, and each of the maturational levels displayed a tendency to favor a particular coaching or control condition. Pre-PHV groups responded most effectively to the progressive style of coaching, displaying improvements in horizontal jump performances, and −0.7% to −2.7% improvements in all sprint times, despite also showing the largest increase in tuck jump scores (25.8%). The circa-PHV group produced their greatest improvements in the traditional intervention, as displayed through significant improvements (p < 0.05) in 20-m sprint times and dominant-leg horizontal jump performance, whilst also revealing the greatest deterioration in tuck jump scores (14.2%). Post-PHV displayed the greatest improvements in the control setting, suggesting that the natural benefits gained through adolescent development were greater than the influence of the training interventions. In conclusion, the results suggest that matching coaching strategies and delivery techniques to the period of biological maturation may have implications for both performance and athlete safety
The application of menthol in sport, exercise and occupational settings: To apply, ingest or discard?
The cold-receptor agonist menthol has been utilised to improve performance by imparting feelings of coolness and freshness to alleviate thermal discomfort. These effects are mediated by peripheral cold-sensitive neurons and trigeminal nerves of the face and oral cavity via activation of TRPM8 channels by either applying, ingesting or swilling menthol solutions. The forcing function exerted by topically applied menthol is probably influenced by a combination of factors, including the percentage of body surface area (BSA) exposed, body region, and dose, but the weighting of each requires clarification, as do factors influencing oral administration. Topically, a greater menthol-mediated forcing function has been shown to alter thermoregulation resulting in heat gain, but the precise mechanisms require clarification. It is unknown whether there is a similar effect when menthol is administered orally, but higher concentrations are reportedly preferred. Consequently, menthol has the potential to improve thermal perception but evoke heat gain responses placing biophysical and behavioural thermoregulation in conflict. Nevertheless, there is a growing body of literature that supports the efficacy of menthol application to improve endurance performance and, more recently, muscular performance. Oral menthol application has been shown to improve time to exhaustion and time trial performance with emerging evidence in power based activities. Independently of the heat storage response, topically applied menthol has also been shown to improve endurance performance and enhance recovery from exercise-induced muscle damage, possibly due to increased motor unit activation. Both methods of application have consistently been shown to ameliorate subjective measures of thermal strain during exercise. Accordingly, the aim of this symposium is to present key literature on the perceptual, thermoregulatory and performance effects of menthol and actively debate the merits of: the medium of application, advised protocols for menthol use during these modalities, the timing of application and the resultant thermoregulatory effects
