Concert of choral works performance with North Shore Camerata
Participate as chorister in concert performance as a member of the North Shore Camerata, (dir Jenny Firth) Takapuna, Saturday August 20, 7.30 at Saint George's Presbyterian Church, Takapuna.
Works included Te Deum (Otto Olson) Vivaldi's Gloria, Zadok the Priest (Handel), O Quam Glorious (Victoria), Above All Praise and All Majesty (Mendelssohn) and I Was Glad (Parry).
Study of the scores and rehearsal with the choir provided invaluable information towards the continued development of my own choral writing and my lecturing to composition students
"twilight 1" - International Piano Day
A live multimedia performance/structured improvisation.
Exploring ideas of improvisation as temporal composition in a real-time environment.
Hamilton-based multimedia ensemble DR. MESMER’S PRIVATE ARMY (Jeremy Mayall, Kent Macpherson, Yotam Levy, and Paul Bradley) present the premiere performance of "twilight 1".
Their multimedia performance work creates intricate tapestries of sound and visuals. Their collective approach to performance really exists in the colour of sound, the magic of the moment where, inspired by space and time, fleeting ideas can create new compositions based around musical fragments and field recordings
Defining Known Drug Space Using DFT.
A density functional theory (DFT) study was performed on a collection of clinically approved drugs, or Known Drug Space (KDS), to determine the statistical distribution of four properties: dipole moment (DM), polarisability (POL), ionisation potential (IP) and electron affinity (EA). The DM and POL are linked to cell permeability of drugs whereas IP and EA reflect their redox stability thus ease of metabolism. A benchmarking exercise showed a good correlation between experimental values and their predicted counterparts. It was found that KDS occupies the volume of chemical space defined by: DM≤10 D, POL≤68 Å3, IP 6.0–9.0 V and EA−1.5–2.0 eV. Only 16 % of the drugs are outside one or more of these parameters. Three categories based on known oral absorption and bioavailability (low/medium/high) were established and compared. Predominately, drugs designated as ‘low’ were found outside the established parameters. The properties were compared with mainstream molecular descriptors and a strong correlation was seen for POL to MW (r2=0.899), which can explain the success of the latter since POL reflects the ability of molecules to interact with polar and non-polar environments such as water and interior of a membrane
Towards an understanding of forensic accounting
Towards an understanding of Forensic Accounting
Purpose: Traditionally there are three approaches to defining forensic accounting, a narrow, a broad and a comprehensive approach. In order to test this, our paper aims to answer the following questions: “What is the presence of ‘forensic accounting’ in NZ, Australia and South America?” “What has happened in the field of ‘Forensic Accounting’ over the past decade?” And “How is the field changing?”
Design/ Methodology/ Approach: This paper adopts a framework developed by Guthrie, Ricceri and Dumay (2012) to perform a structured literature review to disseminate and discuss the various ways that the term ‘forensic accounting’ is presented while simultaneously testing the validity of three categories of definitions identified above.
Findings: In New Zealand, Australia and South America there is evidence of three different views of Forensic Accounting, but that the narrow definitions dominates.
Research limitation/ Implications: Given the multi-lingual nature of our research and our lack of fluency in two of the languages (Spanish and Portuguese), our findings were not as extensive as they could be. Another limitation was related to inherent problems of search engines, where several results were returned with few relevant publications.
Originality/ Value: The findings of our paper demonstrate the developing, multidisciplinary nature of forensic accounting; however this is not being utilised in publications as they focus on the role of forensic accounting and fraud. Additionally, our paper discusses several trends in the field of forensic accounting literature including increased reliance on websites

'Spiritual Journey' A suite of music to accompany a graphic Novel by Mingyu Zhang
Composition and orchestration of a programmatic suite of music for small orchestra to accompany Mingyu Zhang’s graphic novel "Spiritual Journey."
The completed project will be presented as playable music notation scores ready for performing and recording by musicians.
The final output might be a PowerPoint or IEbook or published on-line
Mothers and Food: Performing the Family Mealtime
Mothers occupy a gendered world of food in which they are now (often solely and privately) responsible for food provision and preparation for their families in the privacy (or isolation!) of the own home (c.f., Kinser, 2012). Meanwhile, the importance of eating together around the table is lauded in popular media and scholarly research. As mothers and critical thinkers, Lamdin-Hunter and Dey are daily confronted with the nutritional and social needs of their families and children, and also grapple with concern for worldwide issues of food, poverty and the environment. They believe many homes are sites of a critically-reviewed performance of meal planning, delivery and disposal. While "successful" meal performance is critiqued by social researchers as well as families, the question of whether family mealtimes are really the stock-standard answer to delinquency, obesity and mental ill-health, goes undisturbed. In Aotearoa New Zealand the following two themes are most readily noticeable to these ethnographers: first, the "frequent family dinners'" discourse featured in family health research and critiqued by Amber Kinser, and second, the "consumer choice" ethos featuring the theme of family (maternal) choice regarding the purchase and preparation of food lauded as cheap, convenient, healthy, organic, whole or locally-produced. They argue that the notion of individual selection relating to such movements may individuate and privatize societal and institutional (even global) food issues. In this chapter Lamdin-Hunter and Dey explore and critique these discourses in the context of maternal performances of family food, contemplating their homes and dinner tables with readers
Co-operative Education Project - Employers: Are They Happy?
Interim report/findings to share with staff
Business New Zealand listed the top 10 skills the employers look for are: communication skills, customer service skills, ability to work well in a team, literacy and numeracy skills, confidence learning about and using computers and technology, planning and organisational skills, initiative and a cando attitude, problem-solving skills, good work habits and independence, and health and safety skills. (Career New Zealand n.d., para 2). It is essential for education institutes like Wintec to provide
graduates with these skills to be employable and productive for businesses and society.
It is not uncommon that in job applications, employers require applicants to have some kind of relevant
experience and for fresh graduates it is often a challenge. Volunteering work might be useful but as suggested by Hodges and Burchill that employers want ‘well-rounded’ graduates with a broad range of competencies (Hodges & Burchill, 2003, p. 19)
Eastern Nazarene College (ENC, 2015, para 2) in United States found that internship in college provides
students with well-rounded experience, resume and reference building, confidence, and a chance of getting hired.
The term "cooperative education" means “the provision of alternating or parallel periods of academic study and public or private employment to give students work experiences related to their academic or occupational objectives and an opportunity to earn the funds necessary for continuing and completing their education” (USLegal n.d., para. 1).
In 2015, Wintec offered a cooperative education project in the Bachelor of Applied Management programme for the first time. It is essential to obtain feedback from employers at an early stage for a performance check and continuous improvement to deliver quality education
