Collaborative Exhibition including Chinese and New Zealand Artists. Artists statement: the works of mine included in this exhibition are part of a series of work based in experiences of travelling in China and NZ and considering the slow decline of many natural and built environments as needs for energy and resources produce changes to the landscape. Rather than depicting a sense of regret, the paintings attempt to show the paradox of our desire for the pristine and for the progressive and modern and useful

Assessing abdominal aorta narrowing using computational fluid dynamics

    Get PDF
This paper investigates the effect of developing arterial blockage at the abdominal aorta on the blood pressure waves at an externally accessible location suitable for invasive measurements such as the brachial and the femoral arteries. Arterial blockages are created surgically within the abdominal aorta of healthy Wistar rats to create narrowing resemblance conditions. Blood pressure is measured using a catheter inserted into the right femoral artery. Measurements are taken at the baseline healthy condition as well as at four different severities (20, 50, 80 and 100 %) of arterial blockage. In vivo and in vitro measurements of the lumen diameter and wall thickness are taken using magnetic resonance imaging and microscopic techniques, respectively. These data are used to validate a 3D computational fluid dynamics model which is developed to generalize the outcomes of this work and to determine the arterial stress and strain under the blockage conditions. This work indicates that an arterial blockage in excess of 20 % of the lumen diameter significantly influences the pressure wave and reduces the systolic blood pressure at the right femoral artery. High wall shear stresses and low circumferential strains are also generated at the blockage site

Social work and social media in Aotearoa New Zealand (PhD Research Proposal, The University of Auckland: School of Counselling, Human Services and Social Work, Auckland, New Zealand)

Abstract There is a well-established presence of social media in society and a growing drive for citizens to develop expertise and wisdom around its use (Kaplan, 2010). It is estimated in our most recent statistics that by the end of 2014 three billion people globally will be using the internet; New Zealand is ranked 30 out of 166 countries in its development of internet technology (International Telecommunication Union, 2014). A more important figure for those interested in social justice is the global estimate that 4.3 billion people do not have internet access; 90% of these people live in the developing world. These realities demand the attention of social workers. The social presence of internet communication technology (ICT) and social media provide challenges to social workers around issues of safety, professionalism and competence. These tools also offer promise however; there is potential for professional activities such as networking, research, activism and advocacy to be re-invigorated using social media. The complexities and challenges associated with these opportunities have provided inspiration for this thesis. The questions being asked within this exploratory mixed methods research project are about how social workers in Aotearoa New Zealand use social work professionally, what their opinions and attitudes are toward this, what knowledge social workers feel they require to use social media in a way that is professionally satisfactory to them and how they would like to attain this knowledge. It is hoped that New Zealand social workers will take the opportunity to express their concerns, to share their wisdom, and to be part of a conversation about a phenomenon that is inevitably impacting on our day to day work, with all its promises and perils. The expectations and experiences of Korean International Students in New Zealand tertiary education

    Get PDF
Korea remains the fourth largest source of international students in New Zealand, yet their numbers have halved since 2007 (Ministry of Education, 2014), raising concerns as to whether the needs and expectations of this group have been consistently met by education providers. To date, there has been little research to explore this issue, particularly in relation to tertiary study. The present study explores the reasons for Korean students coming to study in New Zealand and reports on their particular expectations and needs. The research also explores the extent to which former Korean International students in tertiary institutions have fulfilled their stated expectations. Findings are reported from face to face interviews, distance interviews and a survey of current and former international students, both male and female, in Hamilton and Auckland and in Korea. Preliminary findings indicate a general satisfaction with the quality of education and life experiences in New Zealand although some cultural adjustments presented difficulties. However, in terms of fulfilling their career goals, many reported that achieving a NZ qualification did not meet their expectations of employability. This was true for finding a job both in NZ and in Korea, with many reporting that NZ institutions had a low profile among Korean employers. The findings highlight the distinctiveness of Korean students and their particular expectations for their study and life in New Zealand. Recommendations are given for ways in which NZ tertiary providers could improve the experience and outcomes for students from this important international market. Awareness of these may help tertiary institutions in New Zealand attract and support Korean students more successfully

LO-LO (Lift-on, lift-off) is a vernacular term used in the cargo /shipping industry to describe the method by which quay cranes are used to load and unload freight ships. This exhibition of contemporary art produced by Wintec Media Arts staff explores the relationship between New Zealand's primary industries and their international trade relationships and export methods used to distribute commodities to China. The works focus on various aspects of commodity production and distribution networks. These themes are responded to by the various artists using a diversity of media and conventions which range through abstract and figurative painting, kinetic sculptural, video and sound composition to documentary and allegorical photography. Featuring: Gareth Williams, Tim Croucher, Tracey Stockley-Smith, Stefanie Young, Joe Citizen, Lynda Wilson, Mark Purdom, Margi Moore, Xavier Meade, Tony Nicholls, Jason Long, Paul Nelson and Geoffrey Clarke

Preliminary results of a conceptual framework of sponsorship accountability

    Get PDF
There has been increasing amounts of sponsorship funds provided to sports. The sponsorship provides crucial amounts of funds for some sports organisations that are not‐for‐profit. Despite the increasing accountability movement, little research has investigated accountability of sport sponsorship relationships. This paper constructs a framework of an accountability continuum that ranges from profit organisations that have economic responsibilities to charities as a form of not for profit organisation that receive donations and have philanthropic responsibilities. Within the extremes of the continuum includes other not for profit organisations and public benefit entities of mixed expectations and responsibilities. Sport sponsorship relationships include not for profit entities that receive funds from profit organisations, thus span the accountability continuum. The aim of this study was to identify the practices of sport sponsorship to determine the existence of the accountability framework. This current study investigated the characteristics of sport sponsorship reporting using 60 semistructured interviews of both sponsors and sponsorees. A range of diverging responses were found with the frequency and content of reporting consistent with accountability theory of reporting expectations and responsibilities
