Cadmium accumulation in three contrasting New Zealand soils with the same phosphate fertilizer history
Cadmium (Cd) concentration in New Zealand (NZ) agricultural soils has increased due to phosphate fertilizer application, but it is not clear whether soils with different properties accumulate Cd at similar rates for given P loadings. Here, the distribution of Cd was measured in three soils: the well-drained Horotiu series (Orthic Allophanic Soil in NZ soil classification, Typic Hapludand in US soil taxonomy), poorly-drained Te Kowhai series (Orthic Gley Soil in NZ classification, Typic Humaquept in US soil taxonomy) and an intergrade between them, Bruntwood series (Impeded Allophanic Soil in NZ soil classification, Aquic Hapludand in US soil taxonomy). All three soils often occur in the same paddock with the same fertilizer history, but have differing drainage and mineralogical characteristics, permitting an assessment of the potential for varying accumulation/translocation of Cd in contrasting soil conditions. Thirty soil profiles from ten paddocks on a dairy farm near Hamilton, NZ, with a uniform fertilizer history were sampled to depth of 60 cm. The Cd concentration in topsoil (0–7.5 cm) samples (mean of 0.79 mg kg− 1) was about 7–8 times greater than in deeper horizons (P < 0.001). No significant differences in Cd concentration or fractionation among the soil series were detected. Cluster analysis showed that Cd, phosphorus (P) and uranium (U) were highly correlated, consistent with a common source, most likely phosphate fertilizer. The absence of a difference in the Cd depth profiles in the three soils indicates that Cd was preferentially adsorbed to the topsoil and was not significantly mobilized by drainage in the soils. The lack of difference in Cd distribution between contrasting soil series supports the use of one Cd management system tool for all of these soils
Why women and midwives choose to birth in primary birth facilities in the Waikato region
The Waikato region has ten primary birthing facilities, yet approximately 70% of women choose to birth at Waikato Women’s Hospital. Researchers interviewed six women and seven midwives who had given birth, or provided labour and birth care at Waterford Birth Centre, Thames Birth Unit or Birthcare Huntly, in the past five years. Retrospective data from 2010-2015 from each of the units was reviewed to identify outcomes for mothers and babies
Integrating Learning Outcomes of Student Final Year Project with Objectives of a Research Project: Designing an All-In-One System for Climate Control and Air Purification
Student projects are designed to inform tasks on an overarching research project. The goal of the research project is to design a climate control system for particular use in crowded low quality built environments. Individual student projects were tailored to achieve specific phased steps within the project.
This paper describes the mapping of learning outcomes in student projects to objectives of the main project, reflects on the achievement of these learning outcomes in the context of a project that fully explores all of them, and describes the service-learning potential for this type of student project
Human Resource Management
Recruitment and selection strategies result in improved organizational outcomes. With reference to this context, the project entitled Recruitment and Selection has been prepared to put a light on Recruitment and Selection process. The main objective is to identify general practices that organizations use to recruit and select employees and, to determine how the recruitment and selection practices affect organizational outcomes at KITA Ltd.
The methodology used for this project is primary research. I am working for this company as an intern and interviewing the manager for the research purpose. The interviews with the manager are helping me to have a better understanding of Human Resource activities carried in a business and how to deal with various issues. In this project I have learned to practically apply various recruitment and selection methods.
I have also identified various problems encountered during this process. These problems include hiring the right person which is common and biggest problem in today’s business world. Organisations often fail to select right person for a particular job. In this project I have tried to identify right techniques to recruit people in a start-up company. The findings are explained in detail, with various recruitment solutions, in my final report

Social Work and Social Media in Aotearoa New Zealand: Educating Social Workers across Shifting Boundaries of Social Work Identity.
The uneasy relationship between the social work profession and the media has led to recognition by social work educators of the need to incorporate knowledge of media processes and skills of media engagement into the social work education agenda. In addition, there is a clear link between traditional media and social media in the social work context, and the tensions experienced in the media landscape resulting from the recent move to ‘new media’ are relevant to social work and its role in advocating publicly for the rights and needs of vulnerable people. This article makes reference to these ideas in the context of a small Aotearoa New Zealand study that seeks information about social workers’ professional use of social media in this country. Ideas offered by professional leaders in social work are thematically analysed, and themes discussed in this article relate to the complex personal and professional identities social workers negotiate as social media users. Implications for social work education are offered, including those that relate to professional identity development and the ever-shifting ethical landscape of social media engagement
