    Ranging patterns and site fidelity of Snubfin Dolphins in Yawuru Nagulagun/Roebuck Bay, Western Australia

    For long-lived species such as marine mammals, having sufficient data on ranging patterns and space use in a timescale suitable for population management and conservation can be difficult. Yawuru Nagulagun/Roebuck Bay in the northwest of Western Australia supports one of the largest known populations of Australian snubfin dolphins (Orcaella heinsohni)—a species with a limited distribution, vulnerable conservation status, and high cultural value. Understanding the species’ use of this area will inform management for the long-term conservation of this species. We combined 11 years of data collected from a variety of sources between 2007 and 2020 to assess the ranging patterns and site fidelity of this population. Ranging patterns were estimated using minimum convex polygons (MCPs) and fixed kernel densities (weighted to account for survey effort) to estimate core and representative areas of use for both the population and for individuals. We estimated the population to range over a small area within the bay (103.05 km2). The Mean individual representative area of use (95% Kernel density contour) was estimated as 39.88 km2 (± 32.65 SD) and the Mean individual core area of use (50% Kernel density contour) was estimated as 21.66 km2 (±18.85 SD) with the majority of sightings located in the northern part of the bay less than 10 km from the coastline. Most individuals (56%) showed moderate to high levels of site fidelity (i.e., part-time or long-term residency) when individual re-sight rates were classified using agglomerative hierarchical clustering (AHC). These results emphasize the importance of the area to this vulnerable species, particularly the area within the Port of Broome that has been identified within the population’s core range. The pressures associated with coastal development and exposure to vessel traffic, noise, and humans will need to be considered in ongoing management efforts. Analyzing datasets from multiple studies and across time could be beneficial for threatened species where little is known on their ranging patterns and site fidelity. Combined datasets can provide larger sample sizes over an extended period of time, fill knowledge gaps, highlight data limitations, and identify future research needs to be considered with dedicated studies

    Bone mineral concentration predicted by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry and its relationship with lamb eating quality

    Lumbar bone mineral concentration, as predicted by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), may reflect changes in lamb maturity and eating quality. New season (n = 60) and old season (n = 60) lambs were slaughtered and DEXA scanned at a commercial abattoir across 2 kill groups. The second lumbar vertebra was isolated from the spine for determination of calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium concentration (mg/g). The loin and rack cuts were collected for consumer sensory grilling and roasting analyses. Mineral concentration was significantly higher in old season lambs within kill group 1 (P < 0.05). DEXA was a positive predictor of phosphorus and calcium concentration, but only when DEXA lean % (P < 0.05) was included in the model. Calcium and phosphorus were significant positive predictors of overall liking scores (P < 0.05), but only for the rack roast. These effects became insignificant when DEXA lean % was included. These results suggest that DEXA values likely reflect changes in both DEXA lean % and bone minerals, and that DEXA lean % was the driver of eating quality, rather than maturity

    Serum NfL associated with anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis

    Introduction Neurofilament light chains (NfL) have been reported as potential markers for neuronal-axonal injury in neuroinflammatory diseases. In the current study, we describe serum NfL levels as a prognostic marker for anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor encephalitis (NMDARE). Methods Serum levels of NfL of 64 patients with anti-NMDARE and 84 healthy controls were measured by Simoa. The anti-NMDAR Encephalitis One-Year Functional Status (NEOS) score, Modified Rankin Scale (mRS) scores, and clinical and cerebrospinal fluid parameters were evaluated in patients with anti-NMDARE. Meanwhile, we performed a receiver-operator characteristic analysis to assess the power of the serum NFL in predicting the 1-year functional status. Results Serum NfL levels were significantly elevated in patients with anti-NMDARE compared to healthy controls (p  3 vs ≤ 3, p = 0.035) or with limited response to treatment (vs. favorable outcome, p = 0.011). Serum NFL was positively associated with the initial admission mRS (r = 0.23, p = 0.072) and 1-year mRS (r = 0.29, p = 0.018). The AUC of serum NfL and NEOS score for 1-year poor functional status was 0.697 (95% CI 0.527–0.866, p = 0.011), 0.753 (95% CI 0.616–0.890, p = 0.001), respectively. Furthermore, AUC of the combination of serum NfL and NEOS was 0.815 (95% CI 0.680–0.950, p < 0.001). Conclusion Our findings show that serum NfL levels evaluated in anti-NMDAR encephalitis may be a good predictor of the risk of 1-year poor functional status

    Confidence, practices and training needs of people working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander LGBTIQ+ clients

    Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander LGBTIQ+ peoples face an elevated risk for poor health and social-emotional wellbeing, suggesting that this patient group are likely to attend health and community services. However, the current practices of those who deliver care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander LGBTIQ+ peoples are unknown. Utilising mixed methods (survey; n = 197; focus groups and interviews; n = 56), we explored the current practices, confidence, knowledge, and training needs for working with Aboriginal LGBTIQ+ clients among Western Australian health and community service workers. Participants were predominately from the mental health and social-emotional wellbeing care sector. One-third of survey participants indicated that it was likely Aboriginal LGBTIQ+ peoples accessed their service. On average, participants reported high confidence and knowledge in working with Aboriginal LGBTIQ+ clients. Qualitative data indicated that staff struggled to accommodate what they understood to be the needs of clients who were both Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and LGBTIQ+, despite a willingness to 'get it right’. Findings provide the first-ever snapshot of inclusive practices among health and social support workers in Western Australia

    Evidence for multiple refugia and hotspots of genetic diversity for Westralunio carteri , a threatened freshwater mussel in south‐western Australia

    1. Intraspecific genetic diversity provides the evolutionary potential to adapt to changing environments and ‘hotspots’ of high intraspecific diversity are recognized as key targets for conservation. 2. In south-western Australia, intraspecific genetic diversity for mesic taxa is not uniformly distributed. Many species comprise highly divergent lineages with unique haplotypes resulting from contraction to refugia during historical arid cycles. Sampling strategies in studies of the region’s unique and ancient freshwater fauna have often focused on broad distributional range, making it difficult to determine boundaries between lineages and the location of genetic hotspots. 3. This study explored the spatial distribution of intraspecific genetic diversity in the threatened freshwater mussel, Westralunio carteri. Mitochondrial DNA sequences for 164 specimens, sampled from all basins within the distribution of the species, were used to describe lineage boundaries and the location of hotspots, and to reconstruct historical demographics. 4. There was strong evidence for three subregions of genetic diversity based on the largely non-overlapping distributions of three evolutionarily significant units. Spatial and demographic analyses suggest that these evolutionarily significant units persisted through past arid cycles in separate refugia. The majority of haplotypes were unique to a single location, indicating limited connectivity among populations in recent times. Hotspots were identified throughout the region. Most notably, a significant hotspot in the south-western corner probably arose through the overlap of lineages in historical refugia. 5. Conservation assessments often focus on the species as a whole, even though sublineages, hotspots and the threats faced are not evenly distributed across the species range. This paper highlights that effective conservation of spatially structured taxa requires targeted management of multiple genetic units. Given the importance of formal taxonomic description for conservation listings, further investigation of the potential for species delimitation within W. carteri is required

    Examining differences in placental efficiency following exposure to antidepressants and current depression: Findings from an Australian pregnancy cohort study

    Introduction Placental dysfunction and inefficiency, is important in understanding fetal growth restriction and low birth weight. Two recent studies have examined the relationship between antidepressant use in pregnancy and placental weight ratios; one found lower placental weight ratio associated with antidepressant use and the other found a higher ratio. Methods This study examined 342 women recruited in early pregnancy, including 75 taking antidepressants, 29 with current depression and 238 controls. Antidepressant use was measured through self-report in early and late pregnancy, hospital records at delivery and drug concentrations in umbilical cord and maternal blood obtained at delivery. Maternal depression was measured using the Structured Clinical Interview for the DSM IV (SCID) at recruitment. Placentas were collected at delivery and weighed, and infant birth weight recorded. Placental efficiency was measured using standardised placental weight residuals and included as the outcome in general linear models (ANOVA/ANCOVA) to test hypotheses. Results While placental weight was higher for those on antidepressants compared to controls (z=.30 c.f. Z=-0.08, p=.012), there were no significant differences between the three groups after adjusting for maternal body mass index at recruitment. When comparing antidepressant groups separately there were small-to-moderate positive associations between (SSRI) concentrations and placental weight (rho's > 0.20, p's > 0.05), which did not reach significance. Conclusion Antidepressant use in pregnancy was not associated with significant changes in placental efficiency after adjustment for confounding variables. Future research should expand on this to examine other aspects of placental function and include a wide range of potential confounding variables to draw clinically meaningful conclusions

    Pathways toward high-efficiency solar photovoltaic thermal management for electrical, thermal and combined generation applications: A critical review

    Photovoltaic (PV) panels convert a portion of the incident solar radiation into electrical energy and the remaining energy (>70 %) is mostly converted into thermal energy. This thermal energy is trapped within the panel which, in turn, increases the panel temperature and deteriorates the power output as well as electrical efficiency. To obtain high-efficiency solar photovoltaics, effective thermal management systems is of utmost. This article presents a comprehensive review that explores recent research related to thermal management solutions as applied to photovoltaic technology. The study aims at presenting a wide range of proposed solutions and alternatives in terms of design approaches and concepts, operational methods and other techniques for performance enhancement, with commentary on their associated challenges and opportunities. Both active and passive thermal management solutions are presented, which are classified and discussed in detail, along with results from a breadth of experimental efforts into photovoltaic panel performance improvements. Approaches relying on radiative, as well as convective heat transfer principles using air, water, heat pipes, phase change materials and/or nanoparticle suspensions (nanofluids) as heat-exchange media, are discussed while including summaries of their unique features, advantages, disadvantages and possible applications. In particular, hybrid photovoltaic-thermal (PV-T) collectors that use a coolant to capture waste heat from the photovoltaic panels in order to deliver an additional useful thermal output are also reviewed, and it is noted that this technology has a promising potential in terms of delivering high-efficiency solar energy conversion. The article can act as a guide to the research community, developers, manufacturers, industrialists and policymakers in the design, manufacture, application and possible promotion of high-performance photovoltaic-based technologies and systems
