Course Description: 
 
College Composition I focuses on informative, analytical, evaluative, and persuasive writing and 
introduces students to college-level research. Students will develop sound writing processes, 
produce cogent writing, strengthen analytical reading skills, and work with sources. 
 
Log into our course in D2L Brightspace using the same EIU ID and password you use to access 
Panthermail (Microsoft Outlook), PAWS, and MyEIU. This is where the most updated version 
of our course syllabus will be posted. 
 
 
Course Goals: 
 
Students will demonstrate the ability to: 
▪ Develop effective writing processes for producing documents, 
▪ Produce informative, analytical, evaluative, and persuasive prose,  
▪ Implement reading processes to evaluate sources, 
▪ Adapt written texts to suit the text’s purpose, audience, genre, rhetorical situation, and 
discourse community, 
▪ Recognize how to transfer their writing processes, understanding of rhetorical principles, 
and genre awareness to other writing situations, 
▪ Find appropriate sources through secondary research, including the use of academic 
databases, 
▪ Integrate sources ethically and appropriately using at least one recognized citation style,

▪ Compose a minimum of 5,000 words (20 double-spaced pages), 
▪ Use effective language/delivery skills through speaking opportunities, and 
▪ Present work in Edited American English.

A grade of “C” or better in ENG 1001G is required to pass the course and be eligible for 
enrollment in ENG 1002G: College Composition II. 
 
 
Writing Assignments: 
 
All writing assignments must be formatted in MLA 9 citation style.  
All sources must have in-text citations to receive a grade higher than NC. 
We will review MLA 9 at the very beginning of the class!

Note: As a graduation requirement, you must submit 2 essays to be included in your 
Electronic Writing Portfolio (EWP); you may choose to submit an essay from this class (ENG 
1001G). The EWP submissions deadline for Spring 2025 is May 3.

Policies: 
 
My policies in this course agree with EIU’s Internal Governing Policies. 
 
Absences: According to EIU’s Internal Governing Policy #43, instructors have the right to set 
their own attendance policies.  
Students who miss TWO classes or fail to turn in TWO assignments will be required to 
schedule a one-on-one meeting with me. Students missing EIGHT classes will receive No Credit 
(NC). In the case of a planned absence, please email me ASAP at lecraig@eiu.edu.  
Individual absences for cultural or religious observation are permitted, in accordance with 
EIU’s Internal Governing Policy #61, with no grade penalty.  
Your Participation and Attendance grade will be affected by absences unrelated to 
documented health situations. However, if you are experiencing a health situation and need to be 
absent for more than a couple of days, it is your responsibility to request medical visit 
documentation from EIU’s Health & Counseling Services. 
 
Students with Disabilities: If you are a student with a documented disability in need of 
accommodations to fully participate in this class, please contact the Office of Accessibility and

Academic Integrity: Students are expected to maintain principles of academic integrity and 
conduct as defined in EIU’s Code of Conduct. Violations will be reported to the Dean of 
Students. Activities defined as academic dishonesty may include, but are not limited to the 
following:  
1) using unauthorized AI tools, such as any version of Chat GPT or Claude, for research 
or writing without permission,  
2) plagiarizing the published or unpublished work of others, or 
3) buying or commissioning papers to be written by others (strangers, partners, family, 
friends) on your behalf for submission to this course.  
 
Generally, I reserve the right as instructor to decide on the final penalty imposed (i.e. rewrites, 
failing grade on assignment or course). The Dean of Students will pursue more serious 
disciplinary sanctions in the case of repeat violations. 
 
Artificial Intelligence (AI): New AI technologies are already impacting human information-
gathering and online sharing, even though many are flawed and provide false statistics or 
summaries. Though some AI tools can be helpful, using them risks building a dangerous 
dependance on them. As we will discuss in class, here is no guarantee that you will continue to 
have free or cheap access to them. If AI tools are suddenly made unavailable, you may struggle 
to conduct research and write professionally in school or in your future career.  
 
Use of spellcheckers such as Grammarly and citation generators is acceptable, but you 
are NOT allowed to use ChatGPT or another AI tool to draft writing assignments.

Turnitin’s AI-detection and plagiarism-detection features will be activated for all D2L 
Dropbox submissions for this course, in addition to other AI-checkers. 
 
Assignment Submission: For every 24 hours an assignment remains unsubmitted past the 
deadline, 10 points will be removed from the overall grade. Points will also be removed if the 
assignment does not meet stated method, content, and formatting requirements.  
 
Conduct: Students, as class members, should remain respectful and professional throughout the 
course. Bullying, shouting, use of offensive language, swearing at, and insulting other classmates 
or the instructor will not be tolerated, in line with Standards 1 and 2 of EIU’s Standards of 
Student Conduct for 2024-5.  
 
Alcohol, drugs, and weapons cannot be brought onto school property in accordance with the 
Federal Drug-Free Schools and Communities Amendment Act of 1989 (Public Law 101-
226). 
 
Technology: Computer use is permitted for the purposes of taking notes, researching, and 
drafting. Because cell phone use can be distracting, it is not permitted during class time.  
 
 
Academic Resources: 
 
Academic Support Center: For additional help achieving your academic goals, this center 
provides individual consultations, as well as assistance with time management, test taking, note 
taking, avoiding procrastination, setting goals, and other skills to support academic achievement. 
In addition, Academic Alerts may be utilized by faculty to help students who are not making 
academic progress or are not attending classes regularly get connected with the Academic 
Support Center and other important resources. To make an appointment, call 217-581-6696, or 
go to McAfee Gym, Room 2230. 
 
Booth Library: Besides supporting research with millions of print and digital books and 
materials, the library also contains computer/printing labs and boasts a 3-D lab/podcast studio.

usually reply to emails within 24 hours of receipt, except for the weekends. If you send me an

Course Description 
College Composition II focuses on infonnative, analytical, evaluative, and persuasive writing 
and introduces students to college-level research. We will focus on developing a writing process, 
developing a sense of writing community in the classroom, and develop audience awareness. 
You will develop four pieces of writing which reflect these goals and achieve the assignment 
requirements. 
The main objective of Composition II is to develop your ability to make arguments in writing. 
We will do that while also delving into the philosophy in pop culture as a sort of theme for the 
class. We will look at several arguments in preparation for writing arguments of our own and 
develop an awareness that will foster a sense of writing to learn. 
Course Requirements 
This class will require several readings, extensive peer review, in-class writing, various in-class 
activities, online discussions, four major writing assignments, four analytical responses, a final 
response to the class, and a revision portfolio. Completing these tasks is essential to success. 
You will be required to approach assignments actively and thoughtfully, be creative, be present 
mentally, and participate in the class writing community. 
Your Instructor 
Please do not hesitate to email me or to visit my office during office hours if you are struggling 
with course material, assignments, or simply want to touch base. I'm a valuable resource for 
doing well in this course. This is true of any course. Cany this advice into other classes. 
A note on emailing: I will not respond to informal emails. All emails sent to me or any other 
instructor should contain a greeting, a formally written body, and a signature. Do not treat such 
correspondence as you would a text message. 
Attendance and Late Work 
In this document, you can find eve1y assignment and due date in the course. I will also provide a 
separate due date list on D2L for your convenience. Therefore, you can only seek an extension 
on an assignment before it's due date. Once the due date has come, you are likely to be denied. 
If you are not in class the day that something is due, it needs to be turned into D2L or emailed to 
me. Major writing assignments will be expected as hard copies, so you will have to email me a 
copy of the assignment and bring me a hard copy on the next day that you are in class. 
Peer review is time sensitive. In order to be reviewed, you must provide a rough draft at the 
beginning of peer review, even if not present in class that day. And, you cannot retroactively 
review classmates after the assignment is due. 
You are permitted one five-day extension on an essay for free, to be used at your discretion. All 
you have to do is ask for your freebee before the essay's due date. Beyond that, I WILL NOT 
take late work. Plan ahead and get assignments done in the allotted time. 
Documentation Specifications 
All writing assignments for this class should include a MLA header on the top left side of the 
first page of the paper that includes: your name, my name, the class (ENG 1001), and the due 
date of the assignment. You should choose a centered title that IS NOT the title of the 
assignment. Include page numbers with your last name at the top of eve1y page. Font should be 
in 12-point Times New Roman. Essays should be double spaced. 
Analytical Responses 
You will be asked to write an analytical response to each of the four major assignments in this 
course. These will be one-page reflections on our essays. I require a full, single spaced page for 
full credit. You can include the MLA Header. I like the practice. And, you can also put an extra 
space between paragraphs. But, fill the page up. 
In your analytical responses, you should answer some of the following questions: What did you 
learn as a writer from this paper? What did you find most challenging about the assignment? 
Were the discussions that we had in class beneficial to you in writing this paper? Were our 
prewriting activities better or worse for you than those you have done in the past? What did you 
gain from peer review, and was it sufficient, or were you still left with questions? Do you feel 
like you are a better writer or thinker after completing this paper? Did writing this paper alter 
your perspective on anything? 
Online Discussions 
We will have five discussions over D2L throughout the course. You will read the required short 
argument or other material and make a post of 300-500 words, answering one of the questions 
that I post with the reading and then respond to two classmates in at least 200 words. The 
purpose of this is to analyze arguments in order to improve geme awareness skills, critical 
thinking, and to put more argumentative styles in your repe1toire. 
Brief Description of Writing Assignments 
Definition Argument: You will be asked to compose an argument representing who you are 
currently and who you want to be. In this essay, you should define yourself from your own 
perspective, bringing in evidence from your life to support whatever assertions you make. 
Conspiracy Research Essay: This essay will require you to do research into any conspiracy 
theo1y of your choosing. You will report what is believed, by who, why, and what triggered the 
theo1y, but more impo1tantly, arguing what you believe is the truth surrounding this theory and 
why. This essay will allow us to exercise our skills in telling the difference between reliable and 
umeliable sources of information and how to treat these sources differently in an academic essay. 
Album Cover Analysis: This assignment will require you to choose the cover of a musical album 
and analyze it as a companion text to the aitist's music. You will develop an ai·gument about 
what the album cover is conveying to the listener, and how it is advertising, introducing, or 
emphasizing the messages in the album's songs. You will use lyrics, symbolism, and your own 
analytical ability to make these determinations. You cannot do reseai·ch into the artist for this 
assignment. We don' t care what they have to say about their album covers, just what you have to 
say. 
Photographic Op-Ed: For this essay, you will be asked to pick a topic that you think the class 
should know more about and write an ai·gument on why we ought to get involved, informed, or 
just interested in that topic. For this, we will follow the geme of op-ed, which is typically found 
in a newspaper or magazine and stands for opposite the editorial page, typically a strongly 
opinioned piece of writing on anything on relevance to the audience. For this essay, you will also 
be required to take a number of photographs and insert them tactfully into your w1iting so that 
they assist in making your points to the audience. 
Revision and Final Portfolio 
At the end of the semester, we will create a po1tfolio of our essays and revise them. This means 
that every student has the ability to revise every essay for a better grade at the end of the 
semester. You must have turned an essay in order to revise it in the portfolio. So, remember 
throughout the semester that you should always tum in an essay even if it' s not your best or most 
complete work. We'll work on it; that's what school is for. Just don't not try. (And, do as I say, 
not as I do regai·ding double negatives.) 
Classroom Conduct 
Our classroom is a learning environment, and I expect it to be treated as such. 
Here are items you should have in class:

I reserve the tight to ask students to leave for doing any of the acts listed above. 
I reserve the right to stop letting you into class if you are repeatedly late. 
I will ask you to leave for being on electronic devices in lieu of paiticipating in class. I'm 
building a community, and electronics isolate you away from that group. This includes 
headphones on in-class work days. We will have a class playlist to listen to during those times.

I cannot stress enough that this is a fantastic resource for writers at all levels and at every stage in 
the writing process. Even if you don't know where to get staited on a writing assignment, all you 
need is the assignment sheet, and the lovely people in the center will help you figure out where 
to go from there. As an added incentive, I will offer a 2% higher grade on any of the five major 
w1iting assignments if they ai·e turned in with a stainped session form from the center.

Course Description: 
From the Catalogue: College Composition 2, H onors, focuses on informative, analytical, 
evaluative, and persuasive writing and introduces students to college-level research. 
Students will develop sound writing processes and produce cogent writing, strengthen 
analytical reading skills, and work with sources. 
Goals: 
In Composition 2, students will learn to: 
• write papers in and out of class using processes that include discovering ideas and 
evidence, organizing that material, and revising, editing, and polishing the 
finished paper; 
• think critically so that they can recognize the difference between opinion and 
evidence and so that they can support a complex, challenging thesis; 
• address papers to a range of audiences; understand the collaborative and social 
aspects of the writing process and demonstrate an ability to critique the writing 
of themselves and others; 
• develop a sense of voice appropriate to the subject, the writer 's purpose, the 
context, and the reader's expectations; 
• understand how genres shape reading and writing and produce writing in several 
genres; 
• understand how culture shapes composition and shapes reading and response; 
• compose unified, coherent paragraphs that develop topic sentences with detailed 
support; 
• follow the conventions of standard edited English and MLA documentation; 
• use electronic environments for drafting, reviewing, revising, editing, and sharing 
texts; 
• understand and exploit the differences in the rhetorical strategies and in the 
affordances available for both print and electronic composing processes and 
texts. 
Required materials: 
• A notebook or lined paper; a pen or pencil; access to the Internet; a computer 
with word-processing capabilities and a printer; copies of your writing as needed. 
• Your imagination! 
Course Requirements: 
• Students will complete a minimum of three written projects (approximately 1,500 
words each). In addition to the three major projects and doing other work, all 
students will create a final portfolio that will be responsible for 30% of their total 
grade. The final portfolio will include revisions of all three projects and a small 
(500 to 750 words) introduction. 
Specific Course Requirements: 
• For this particular composition course, students must consider the cultural 
influences to all of their writing as well as the potential cultural response. We will 
seek to define on our own multicultural perspectives - as individuals, as a class, 
and in a university context - and use that to build a list of the expectations we 
have for our writing and how others will perceive it.

Participation: 
• Participation means coming to class and actively participating in building 
classroom culture by speaking up, by completing in-class writing assignments, 
and by reading a particular day's assigned material before class begins. 
Participation means silencing your cellular devices and shutting your laptops 
during class. 
Late and Make-up Work: 
• All work should be turned in complete and on time. Of course, unforeseen 
things happen, and if you have a documented excuse for your absence I will work 
with you to make sure that you get credit for all of your work. Work submitted 
late without an appropriate excuse may be penalized up to a letter grade per day 
for each day it is late. 
M ethods of Evaluation: 
TI1e grades for this class will determined by points earned (1000 total points possible) 
and will be reported based on the standard g.rading scale. H owever, per IAI standards, a 
grade of C or higher is required for advancement to higher level E nglish courses.

Participants in this course must be course compliant with the University's Non-

discrimination against any person because of race, color, sex, religion, age, national 
origin, ancestty, marital status, disability, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender 
identity, or any other basis of discrin1ination precluded by federal and state statutes is

In addition, as we will be discussing and investigating aspects of each other's cultures, it 
is important for members of this class to not only "tolerate" each otl1er's unique and 
different qualities but to celebrate them. It is a requirement of this class that all we treat 
each other with kindness, respect, and compassion.

Failure to silence and put away phones, laptops, and smartwatches, and other cellular 
devices (if they aren't being used for class purposes) will result in points being deducted 
from your participation grade for the class. 
Plagiarism and Copyrigh t: 
Just don't plagiarize! If you have any issue completing your assignments within the 
assigned timeframe, please contact me directly before you even consider plagiarizing an 
assignment. I will work with you on a timeframe for completion. 
Eastern Illinois University considers plagiarism a serious offense under its student 
conduct code, and the penalty can be as serious as expulsion from school. 
The English D epa1iment's policy on plagiarism: "Any teacher who discovers an act of 
plagiarism- "The appropriation or imitation of the language, ideas, and/ or thoughts of 
another author, and representation of them as one's own original work" (Random House 
Dictionary of the English Language)- has the right and responsibility to impose upon 
the guilty student an appropriate penalty, up to and including immediate assignments of a 
grade of F for the assigned essay and a grade of F for the course, and to report the 
incident to the Office of Student Standards. Respect for the work of others should 
encompass all formats, including print, electronic, and oral sources."

-With regard to AI, the most important guide to follow is: if you consider using AI for 
any of your classes, you should always talk to your professor in advance to obtain 
permission to use AI tools for any of your coursework. In addition, when granted 
permission you should always appropriately cite the use of AI in your coursework. 
Please, talk to your professor about their expectations on AI use and how to cite the 
work. 
• Don't rely solely on information provided by generative AI as it may be 
inaccurate, misleading, biased, and even made-up, including false citations. 
Always verify the reliability and validitty of all sources cited by any AI application. 
• Don't use generative AI to replace your critical thinking and problem-solving 
skills. 
• Generative AI can be a tremendous tool to supplement your learning process, 
not to replace it. You will still need to think critically and engage with your course 
work, using AI as one of many tools at your disposal.

Course Description: 
 
College Composition II focuses on argumentation and the critical inquiry and use of sources and 
arguments. Course work entails analyzing others’ arguments and writing a variety of well-
researched and ethically responsible arguments. Students gain further practice finding relevant 
information from a variety of sources and evaluating, synthesizing, and presenting that 
information. 
 
Log into our course in D2L Brightspace using the same EIU ID and password you use to access 
Panthermail (Microsoft Outlook), PAWS, and MyEIU. This is where the most updated version 
of our course syllabus will be posted. 
 
 
Course Goals: 
 
Students will demonstrate the ability to: 
• Apply the principles of argument-claims, reasons, evidence, assumptions, counter-
arguments – in written documents, 
• Produce cogent written arguments that consider ideas, issues, problems, and evidence 
from multiple perspectives, 
• Evaluate primary and secondary source evidence, including quantitative data, to 
determine its credibility, appropriateness, and relevance, 
• Integrate sources ethically, appropriately, and consistently in written documents, 
• Use data and create graphical elements in their writing, 
• Compose a minimum of 5,000 words (20 double-spaced pages),

• Recognize how to transfer their writing processes, understanding of rhetorical principles,

Students who miss TWO classes or fail to turn in TWO assignments will be required to

Individual absences for cultural or religious observation are permitted, in accordance with

Students. Activities defined as academic dishonesty may include, but are not limited to the

1) using unauthorized AI tools, such as any version of Chat GPT, for research or 
writing,  
2) plagiarizing the published or unpublished work of others, or 
3) buying or commissioning papers to be written by others (strangers, partners, family, 
friends) on your behalf for submission to this course.  
 
Generally, I reserve the right as instructor to decide on the final penalty imposed (i.e. rewrites, 
failing grade on assignment or course). The Dean of Students will pursue more serious 
disciplinary sanctions in the case of repeat violations. 
 
Artificial Intelligence (AI): New AI technologies are already impacting human information-
gathering and online sharing, even though many are flawed and provide false statistics or 
summaries. Though some AI tools can be helpful, using them risks building a dangerous 
dependance on them. As we will discuss in class, here is no guarantee that you will continue to

have free or cheap access to them. If AI tools are suddenly made unavailable, you may struggle 
to conduct research and write professionally in school or in your future career.  
 
Use of spellcheckers such as Grammarly and citation generators is acceptable. You are 
NOT allowed to use ChatGPT or another AI tool to draft writing assignments. 
 
Turnitin’s AI-detection and plagiarism-detection features will be activated for all D2L 
Dropbox submissions for this course, in addition to other AI-checkers. 
 
Assignment Submission: For every 24 hours an assignment remains unsubmitted past the 
deadline, 10 points will be removed from the overall grade. Points will also be removed if the 
assignment does not meet stated method, content, and formatting requirements. Contact me if 
you need help!  
 
Conduct: Students, as class members, should remain respectful and professional throughout the 
course. Bullying, shouting, use of offensive language, swearing at, and insulting other classmates 
or the instructor will not be tolerated, in line with Standards 1 and 2 of EIU’s Standards of 
Student Conduct for 2024-5.  
 
Alcohol, drugs, and weapons cannot be brought onto school property in accordance with the 
Federal Drug-Free Schools and Communities Amendment Act of 1989 (Public Law 101-

Welcome to ENG 1002! This semester we 1,oill be using Book Banning and Challenges 
for our argument focus. O1Jer the course of the semester, you will choose, read, evaluate, 
and argue for or against a book that has been banned or challenged somewhere in the 
US in the recent past. The book must be written at an adult or young adult reading 
level. Your book of choice can be fiction, nonfiction, poetnJ, or a graphic novel.

Office hours meetings can also be held in the libraiy, in the coffee shop, in a classroom, 
or outside (weather permitting) by request. For in-person drop-ins are fine, however, I 
recommend making an appointment if possible so I can hold the time for you. 
Final Exam Period 
My intent is for us not to meet as a class during the final exam time. This will allow you 
to use that time to complete the final Po1tfolio assignment or meet with me individually. 
Course Description 
College Composition II focuses on ai·gumentation and the critical inquiry and use of 
sources and arguments. Coursework entails analyzing others' ai·guments and writing a 
variety of well-reseai·ched and ethically responsible ai·guments. Students gain finiher 
practice finding relevant information from a variety of sources and evaluating,

The quality of students' w1iting is the principal dete1minant of the course grade. Over the 
course of the semester, you will produce a minimum of 5,000 words of polished, revised 
prose in addition to info1mal writing such as discussion posts, emails, notes, drafts, etc. 
The grades for this class are reported based on the standard grading scale. However, per 
IA.I standards, a grade of C or higher is required for advancement to higher-level English 
courses.

Writing Expectations 
Assignments, essays, and any written submissions should be be cleaT and concise, demonstrate 
an understanding of grammatical rnles, proper punctuation usage, and accurate spelling. If an 
answer to a question is Yes or No, you must include support for your response. 
Revision 
**If you choose to, you can revise and resubmit (in the original Final Draft dropbox) an 
assignment for a (possibly) improved grade. Before you can revise, you must meet with me one-
on-one to discuss the assigmnent. When you submit your revision, you must include a note 
explaining the revisions. Successful revisions will show that you attended to the notes given by 
your instructor, the Writing Center, and peer reviewers as well as any low-order (grammar and 
punctuation) changes. The revision is due within ten days after the assigmnent was graded.

grades will be in D2L. Homework assignments and reminders will be presented in class 
and on the Course Home page. The Content section of our D2L course lists all of the 
modules and the assignments, readings, etc. for each module. I highly recommend 
completing the D2L training on your D2L Brightspace Homepage. 
Turnitin 
W1itten work will be sub1nitted through Tumitin in D2L. Tumitin includes an AI 
detection tool that indicates the amount of qualifying text within the submission that 
Turnitin's AI writing detection model determines was generated by AI. This information 
may be used, in addition to other evidence, if there are concerns with academic 
misconduct. IfTurnitin detects AI or large sections of copied text, a meeting with me will 
be required. 
Plagiarism and Copyright 
Plagiarism is using someone else's words, work, or ideas without providing proper 
acknowledgment. Eastern Illinois University considers plagiarism a serious offense under 
its student conduct code, and the penalty can be as se1ious as expulsion from school. 
Tumitin, a Web-based plagiarism detection se1vice, will be used in this class. 
The English Department's policy on plagiarism: "Any teacher who discovers an act of 
plagiarism-'The appropriation or i1nitation of the language, ideas, and/or thoughts of 
AI 
another author, and representation of them as one's original work' (Random House 
Dictiomuy)-has the right and the responsibility to impose upon the guilty student an 
appropriate penalty, up to and including immediate assignment of a grade of F for the 
course, and to repo1t the incident to the Judicial Affairs Office."

AI produced texts may not be submitted as coursework in this class. Students are not 
allowed to use advanced automated tools (artificial intelligence or machine learning tools 
such as ChatGPT, Dall-E 2, or similar AI tools). Each student is expected to complete 
each assignment without substantive assistance from others, including automated tools. 
This course asks you to wiite for many purposes: to learn, to think, to 
communicate clearly, and to enter imp01tant academic conversations. Generative AI can, 
in some situations, support these goals. However, generative AI, if used unethically or 
uncritically, can prevent you from meeting these learning goals. Generative AI also has 
significant risks and limitations, including privacy concerns and inaccurate and biased 
outputs. In this course, students will be allowed to use generative AI wiiting technologies 
for some elements of some course projects and activities. Professor Hart will explain 
when generative AI is allowed as part of the writing process and strategies for 
transparently disclosing use of generative AI. Any other use of generative AI w1iting 
technologies (i.e. ChatGPT, Gemini, and other systems) is prohibited. If a student uses 
generative AI writing technologies on assignments in which the use of generative AI is 
prohibited, the student will receive no credit for those assignments and they cannot be 
made up. All use of AI will be rep01ted. Students should discuss with their instructor any 
questions they have about using generative AI on CPN 101 assignments. 
Extra Credit 
The best way to do well in this class is to complete all of the assignments and pa1ticipate 
folly, which will make extra credit unnecessary. There are three extra credit assignments 
available this semester at 10 points each for a total of 30 points. You can choose to tum 
these assignments in, or not. If you do not complete them, it will not affect your grade (it 
will be like they never existed). However, extra credit assignments must be done by their 
due date and cailllot be made up. Details are available in the Extra Credit module in D2L. 
Late and Missing Work 
At EIU, "faculty are required to permit students to make up work when they miss class 
for properly verified absences 'due to illness, emergency, participation in an official 
University activity, or pa1ticipation in volunteer emergency work.". If you miss an 
assignment, you must meet with me dming office hours within 7 days to discuss the 
missed work before you can tum it in. All work tmned in without a meeting will be given 
a zero. 
In the case of prolonged illness, unusual or unavoidable circumstances, and at my discretion, 
late consequences may be waived. This waiver will require a meeting with me, outside of class 
time. 
Attendance Policy 
Our class time is limited so students are expected to be in class on time for every class 
meeting and stay for the entire class time. Regular absences, arriving late, or leaving 
early will affect your grade and may affect your financial aid. Aniving late or leaving 
early may cause you to be marked as absent. If you anive late, you must wait for a 
natural; break in the class before entering the classroom, so you do not disturb your 
classmates' learning. 
All inquiries about missed classes and missed classwork must be done in person or 
on Zoom during office hours and within 7 days. If you know in advance that you will miss 
class, I recommend meeting with me before the absence. 
Conduct 
I expect all students to conduct themselves as thoughtful, considerate, mature adult 
learners. Any student who disrnpts the class or behaves inappropriately will be asked to 
leave immediately and may be dropped from the course. Examples of dismptive or 
inappropriate behavior include (but are not limited to): offensive, rnde, or angiy

language, comments, or actions; interrupting discussions or lectures; sleeping; eating; 
smoking, vaping, chewing tobacco; disregarding instructions; nonclass related on line 
activity or social media, ringing or buzzing cell phones or other devices. Tum off your 
cell phone and put all unnecessruy elecu-onic devices away. Silence (or whatever) Fitbits, 
Apple watches, etc. I will ask that they be put away if they are a distJ.·action.

Course Description 
In this course, students will learn the ins and outs of producing a literary magazine by completing 
an issue of EIU’s award-winning student-run magazine, The Vehicle. We will combine discussion of 
best practices in literary editing, print, and digital publishing, with nuts-and-bolts production of a 
full issue. Students will solicit and evaluate work, as well as produce, promote, and distribute the 
final product.

By the end of the course, you should be able to 
● Develop a working understanding of the editorial, production, and promotional processes 
associated with producing a periodical publication 
● Develop technical skills in editing, document design, web design, professional 
communication, submission software, and project management 
● Use effective collaborative strategies to work with others

● Enhance the quality and reputation of The Vehicle

Journal Presentation: Early in the semester, I will ask each of you to present on a periodical similar 
to The Vehicle (i.e. a print or online creative arts / literary periodical). The goal here is to spend 
about five minutes walking the class through the periodical you’ve chosen from a professional 
writing perspective. In other words, how would you characterize the design? What features do you 
notice? Think holistically: look at multiple elements. Look at their social media presence. How do 
they present work? What do you love about their vibe? What do you not love? 
 
Promotion Assignments: These assignments will ask you to contribute in some way to the 
promotion of our magazine through the creation of social media posts, flyers, email campaigns or 
other materials. 
 
Promotion Analysis: Looking at three different publications, you will write a 250 word (min.) 
explanation of these organizations promote their brands. 
 
Copyediting Assignment: Learning to edit creative work is a special skill. This assignment will 
incorporate skills and strategies from the course text to practice copyediting on a literary piece. 
 
In-Class Activities: In many ways, this is a studio class. In other words, we will be using our class 
time to produce the magazine, including having editorial meetings, doing hands-on production 
tasks, and making a ton of small decisions. Attendance is critical, therefore. I will work with you if 
you fall ill, have an extenuating circumstance, or have other issues that prevent you from earning 
the points for in-class activities that you would like. 
 
Reading Assignments: A great deal of time and effort is spent reading the submissions we receive to 
the Vehicle. This assignment will require you to read a certain number of submissions, rate them, 
and include brief feedback. Genre and amount depends on number of subs received and your own 
particular interests. 
 
Website Mockup: This assignment will allow you to showcase your design sensibility and will test 
your Squarespace technical know-how by asking you to create a website mock-up. 
 
Reflection / Reflective Final Exam: Our midterm and final exam will be a series of short essay 
questions designed to get you to reflect on your contributions and your collaborative strengths (and 
areas for improvement) over the course of the term. 
 
Attendance and Participation: This class cannot run smoothly without the active attendance and 
participation of every member. You are allowed three unexcused absences without penalty. (An 
excused absence is one that has documentation.) After that point, I will begin deducting points from 
your attendance and participation grade for each class missed. I reserve the right to ask you to meet 
with me to make a plan for making up missed classes / coursework. 
 
Late work 
When you’re involved in the production of a periodical, or working on any collaborative writing / 
editing team, missing deadlines impacts everyone. (It’s the kind of thing that can, and does, get 
people fired!) Some assignments I will accept late for one point off per day late. Other assignments 
cannot be turned in late due to the magazine’s production workflow. (For example, if you are 
assigned to read and vote on 10 short stories, doing this assignment after editorial decisions have 
already been made on the pieces is no long necessary.) I will indicate which assignments cannot be 
turned in late in Dropbox. However, you will have the opportunity to do alternate assignments to 
make up points. 
 
What You Can Expect from Me 
For emails, please allow me up to 24 hours to respond to your message; I may take slightly longer 
on weekends or in-semester breaks. For assignments, I will try to return grades in one week. 
 
Classroom Etiquette 
Perhaps the most important classroom policy of all concerns our learning environment. A 
successful learning community is one in which we can learn from people whose perspectives we 
might not necessarily share, and I ask everyone to be constructive and well-intentioned. 
Collaborative work can be hard. Egos can get in the way, and it’s easy to have feelings about 
whether or not everyone is doing their fair share. Communication is essential to solving problems. 
One caveat: If you engage in hate speech or bias toward protected groups, I am obligated to report 
this to the university.

Note: AI will come up in the class, and I look forward to discussing its wide impact on literary 
editing and publishing, as well as on creative writing in general. However, do not use these tools 
to create any of the work you turn in for this class. If I suspect your work to be AI-assisted, 
I will conference with you to determine an appropriate course of action, which will likely include 
redoing the work.

Course Description
This course studies the always-interesting but vexing problem of 
unreliable narration in YA fiction. While unreliable narration is 
hardly new, it’s going through a renaissance of sorts in current 
YA fiction to the extent that unreliability, in a variety of forms, is 
almost the default mode.  
To better understand unreliable narration, we will take a 
focused look at narrative structure— terminology, concepts, 
kinds of narrative forms, and important scholarly debates. We 
will be reading texts across all genres, discussing how 
unreliability has evolved and shifted. Students will also be 
encouraged to self-select other YA titles to inform individual 
writing assignments and a group project.

Course Goals

An assignment sheet will be provided for all major writing project, which will detail writing tasks, 
objectives, and expectations. 
 
Response Writing is a catch-all term to cover the variety of short writing you will be completing on 
sometimes a daily basis. This can include preparing a response outside of class (to present in a class 
discussion) or could include individual or group writing for an in-class activity. 
 
If you miss a class with an excused absence, you won’t be penalized for not completing a response 
(see attendance policy below). 
 
English Studies Conference (ESC). You will be asked to participate in the department’s annual ESC 
(more details later). Any and all completed work for the ESC will be factored into the course 
requirements listed above. 
 
Attendance Policy 
The course attendance policy follows closely EIU’s official policy on absences, which essentially means 
that you won’t be penalized for excused absences (illness, emergency, participation in an official 
University activity, etc.). See EIU’s IGP #43 for more information.  
 
Students are responsible for documenting the excused absence with the instructor. 
 
You may miss 2 classes for personal reasons without being penalized. Without any documentation or 
prior arrangements, you cannot make up any work missed on these personal days. If you miss more than 
2 days, your final grade will be docked accordingly — approximately one letter grade for every two days 
missed.  
 
You are expected to turn in your work on time. Late work—especially on major writing projects — will 
be penalized a letter grade for each day they are late. Extensions may be granted but you should discuss 
your situation with your instructor ahead of the due date.  
 
Please note: messaging your instructor that you won’t be attending class on a given day does not 
constitute an excused absence.

(1) Review EIU’s policy on AI usage: https://www.eiu.edu/fdic/ai_guidance.php, including how to 
document AI use appropriately.  
(2) You may use generative AIs for course work as a tool or aid. However, students are NOT allowed to 
submit undocumented AI-assisted writing as if it were their own writing. This is expressly forbidden and 
could result in an instance of plagiarism. 
(3) This policy includes the use of Grammarly (and other such writing tools), which increasingly rely on 
generative AI. 
If you use Grammarly (or another writing assistant), please speak with your instructor ahead of time 
about what is appropriate usage. It’s likely that you will be asked to submit two versions of your 
document: the draft your submitted to the writing assistant and the output.
