Course Description 
College Composition II focuses on argumentation and the critical inquiry and use of 
sources and arguments. Coursework entails analyzing others’ arguments and writing a 
variety of well-researched and ethically responsible arguments. Students gain further 
practice finding relevant information from a variety of sources and evaluating, 
synthesizing, and presenting that information. C1 901R  WC 
 
Learning Objectives 
Students will demonstrate the ability to: 
• Apply the principles of argument-claims, reasons, evidence, assumptions, counter-
arguments, and counter-argumentation-in written documents  
• Produce cogent written arguments that consider ideas, issues, problems, and evidence 
from multiple perspectives  
• Evaluate primary and secondary source evidence, including quantitative data, to 
determine its credibility, appropriateness, and relevance  
• Integrate sources ethically, appropriately, and consistently in written documents  
• Use data and create graphical elements in their writing  
• Recognize how to transfer their writing processes, understanding of rhetorical 
principles, genre awareness, understanding of argumentative principles, and the 
research process to other writing situations 
• Present work in Edited American English 
 
Methods of Evaluation 
The quality of students’ writing is the principal determinant of the course grade. Over the 
course of the semester, you will produce a minimum of 5,000  words of polished, revised 
prose in addition to informal writing such as discussion posts, emails, notes, drafts, etc. 
The grades for this class are reported based on the standard grading scale. However, per 
IAI standards, a grade of C or higher is required for advancement to higher-level English 
courses.

• Practical Argument, 5th Edition by Kirszner and Mandell 
•  Paper and something to write with for in-class work  
• Something to hold handouts (readings may be used more than once during the semester)  
NOTE: Readings may be changed, updated, or removed as the need arises.  
 
Assignments  
Homework, Quizzes, Shorter & In Class Assignments (totaling 350 points) 
Includes, Quizzes, Homework, Short Assignments, In-Class Activities, Rough Drafts, 
Peer Reviews, Discussions, Reading Responses, & other assignments.  
 
Often Homework is due right before class, with the intent to have it be a part of our class 
discussion.  In those cases, homework work that is turned in after class begins will have a 
30% reduction in possible points.  
 
Reading and Lecture Quizzes are usually worth 10 points and are typically due on 
Fridays. The points possible are reduced 5% per day the quiz is late.

There is no Final Exam test in this class.  
 
 
Writing Expectations 
Assignments, essays, and any written submissions should be clear and concise,  demonstrate an 
understanding of grammatical rules, proper punctuation usage, and accurate spelling. If an 
answer to a question is Yes or No, you must include support for your response.  
 
Revision 
**If you choose to, you can revise and resubmit (in the original Final Draft dropbox) your 
Argument Research Essay Final Draft for a (possibly) improved grade.  When you submit your 
revision, you must include a note explaining the revisions.  Successful revisions will show that 
you attended to the notes given by your instructor, the Writing Center, and peer reviewers as well 
as any low-order (grammar and punctuation) changes. The revision is due before our class 
meeting time during finals week.

D2L 
For this course, you will submit all Essays and Major Writing Assignments to D2L.  
Smaller and in-class assignments may be in D2L, on paper, or observed in person.  All 
grades will be in D2L. Homework assignments and reminders will be presented in class 
and on the Course Home page. The Content section of our D2L course lists all of the 
modules and the assignments, readings, etc. for each module.  I highly recommend 
completing the D2L training on your D2L Brightspace Homepage.   
 
Turnitin 
Written work will be submitted through Turnitin in D2L. Turnitin includes an AI 
detection tool that indicates the amount of qualifying text within the submission that 
Turnitin’s AI writing detection model determines was generated by AI. This information 
may be used, in addition to other evidence, if there are concerns with academic 
misconduct. If Turnitin detects AI or large sections of copied text, a meeting with me will 
be required.  
 
Plagiarism and Copyright 
Plagiarism is using someone else's words, work, or ideas without providing proper 
acknowledgment. Eastern Illinois University considers plagiarism a serious offense under 
its student conduct code, and the penalty can be as serious as expulsion from school. 
Turnitin, a Web-based plagiarism detection service, will be used in this class. 
  
The English Department’s policy on plagiarism: “Any teacher who discovers an act of 
plagiarism—‘The appropriation or imitation of the language, ideas, and/or thoughts of 
another author, and representation of them as one’s original work’ (Random House 
Dictionary)—has the right and the responsibility to impose upon the guilty student an 
appropriate penalty, up to and including immediate assignment of a grade of F for the 
course, and to report the incident to the Judicial Affairs Office.” 
 
AI  
AI produced text may not be submitted as coursework in this class. Students are not 
allowed to use advanced automated tools (artificial intelligence or machine learning tools 
such as ChatGPT, Dall-E 2, or similar AI tools) on assignments in this course. Each 
student is expected to complete each assignment without substantive assistance from 
others, including automated tools.

Extra Credit 
The best way to do well in this class is to complete all of the assignments and participate 
fully, which will make extra credit unnecessary. There are three extra credit assignments 
available this semester at 10 points each for a total of 30 points.  You can choose to turn 
these assignments in, or not. If you do not complete them, it will not affect your grade (it 
will be like they never existed).  However, extra credit assignments must be done by their 
due date and cannot be made up. Details are available in the Extra Credit module in D2L.  
 
Late Work 
At EIU, “faculty are required to permit students to make up work when they miss class 
for properly verified absences ‘due to illness, emergency, participation in an official 
University activity, or participation in volunteer emergency work.’” so late in class or 
homework (not including major assignments) will be accepted up to 7 after the original 
due date. 10% percent per day will be deducted for late Major Writing Assignments.  
 
 In the case of prolonged illness, unusual or unavoidable circumstances, and at my discretion, 
late consequences may be waived.  This waiver will require a meeting with me, outside of class 
time.   
  
Attendance Policy 
Our class time is limited so students are expected to be in class on time for every class 
meeting and stay for the entire class time. Regular absences, arriving late, or leaving 
early will affect your grade and may affect your financial aid. Arriving late or leaving 
early may cause you to be marked as absent. If you arrive late, you must wait for a 
natural; break in the class before entering the classroom, so you do not disturb your 
classmates' learning.  
 
Conduct 
I expect all students to conduct themselves as thoughtful, considerate, mature adult 
learners.  Any student who disrupts the class or behaves inappropriately will be asked to 
leave immediately and may be dropped from the course.  Examples of disruptive or 
inappropriate behavior include (but are not limited to): offensive, rude, or angry 
language, comments, or actions; interrupting discussions or lectures; sleeping; eating; 
smoking, vaping, chewing tobacco; disregarding instructions; nonclass related on line 
activity or social media, ringing or buzzing cell phones or other devices.  Turn off your 
cell phone and put all unnecessary electronic devices away.  Silence (or whatever) Fitbits, 
Apple watches, etc. I will ask that they be put away if they are a distraction. 
  
Academic Integrity 
Students are expected to maintain principles of academic integrity and conduct as defined 
in EIU’s Code of Conduct (http://www.eiu.edu/judicial/studentconductcode.php). 
Violations will be reported to the Office of Student Standards.

The closest all-gender restroom to our class is on the 2nd floor of Coleman Hall. Gender-
limited restrooms are located just down the hall from our classroom and on every floor in

Students may submit essays from any class that meet the EWP standards, and we 
encourage submission from English 1001 or 1002. Submissions must be at least 750 
words (excluding works cited), and may not be fiction, poetry, or drama.

Welcome to ENG 2760 online. I look forward to working with you this semester.  
 
Course Description: Introduction to the principles and practices of writing in 
professional settings. Students will complete case-based and/or client-based projects in 
multiple genres and media. The course will also address ethical communication, 
document design, intercultural/global communication, collaboration, basic copyediting, 
and presentation. WC 
 
Course Objectives: English 2760 introduces the principles and practices of 
communication in professional settings. In this course, you will learn and then apply 
professional communication concepts. Specifically, by the end of the semester, you will 
be asked to demonstrate the following objectives: 
1. Use effective communication strategies, including appropriate research 
techniques, to solve hypothetical and real-world problems (i.e., critical thinking 
and problem solving)  
2. Adapt general professional writing principles (related to content, organization, 
and tone) to specific audiences, purposes, and contexts—including online and 
global contexts  
3. Use revision and editing strategies to improve your own and others’ writing  
4. Use basic principles of effective visual and document design  
5. Use effective collaborative strategies to create a positive work environment  
6. Demonstrate understanding of basic ethical and legal considerations related to 
professional communication  
7. Demonstrate college- and professional-level writing produced through the 
process of prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and proofreading

Active EIU e-mail account & Internet Access to EIU's D2L Online Course Delivery 
System 
Recent Version of Microsoft Word (Office 365 available at no charge to EIU students) 
 
Course Requirements: In this class, you will also complete several "Writing 
Assignments" (Complaint Letter, "Bad News" Adjustment Letter, Website & Social 
Media Proposal, and Promotional Materials/Report) that allow you to apply course 
reading as you create professional documents. If one becomes available, you may also 
complete a client project as one of the Writing Assignments as well, depending upon 
client availability. Therefore, projects may overlap somewhat, but such practice is not 
unusual in professional communication. Class participation requirements appear in the 
next section. Finally, you will complete a Final Project that includes revision of specific 
assignments and a self-analysis essay. Make certain that you read the “News” 
messages from Dr. Binns. They may include reminders for upcoming assignments, 
schedule changes, if needed, and/or other class news. The Writing Assignments and 
Final Project appear under “Content.” 
 
Participation: There will be a substantial amount of online daily work through D2L 
(such as peer responses as well as class and online discussion posts) during the 
semester. These activities are worth up to 10 points. Peer Responses will be worth up 
to 20 points. See the associated rubrics under Content for criteria. Read the directions 
for each discussion or peer response post closely so that you don't miss any aspects of 
the assignment. Dr. Binns will assign peer responses based upon drafts turned in 
by the posted peer response deadlines, so students who submit late drafts may 
not be included in peer response assignments. It is not fair for students who turn in 
drafts by the deadline to have less time for responses with late peers. More details for 
each discussion topic, such as specific discussion questions, will be posted with 
instructions from Dr. Binns on the Discussion Board at least one day prior to the 
discussion thread. Students must follow the EIU Netiquette guidelines that are posted 
under "Content" in D2L.  
 
Deadlines: Due dates for D2L posts and assignments are listed on the course syllabus, 
but they may change at my discretion. The Final Project, Writing assignments, peer 
responses and other discussion posts must be submitted by 11:59 PM on the date listed 
on the syllabus course calendar.  
 
Each missed assignment deadline will reduce the assignment grade by 10 % per 
day. Students must complete all Writing Assignments and the Final Project to be 
eligible to pass the class.

Course Description  
Interviewing is a key skill for many professional writers. Interviews can be conducted for a wide 
variety of purposes: to gain background information, to verify the accuracy or appropriateness of 
information obtained elsewhere, or as the primary source for a piece of writing for internal or external 
readerships. 
Good interviewing draws on other professional writing skills: research, project planning and 
project management, and interpersonal communication—with a special emphasis on active listening. 
When we write from an interview, we will also draw on important editing and, often, collaboration skills. 
So, in this course, we will practice interviewing a lot, to build up those specific skills. We will also 
use many of our interviews to produce deliverables, so that will involve reviewing, practicing, and 
perhaps gaining some new skills related to professional writing.  It is my hope that you will end the 
course with both some new or improved skills and some items for your professional portfolio.

Deadlines & Extensions: Time management is an essential skill for professional communicators, who 
typically must juggle multiple deadlines and often find themselves tasked to meet deadlines that are 
shorter than they’d like. In practice, for some projects, getting a bit of extra time is possible. For other 
projects, extensions are not possible. In this class, for non-client projects, if you ask for a short extension 
in person or by texting or phoning the instructor by 9 PM the day before the deadline, there will be no 
grade penalty. Otherwise, late work will be docked 5% per day.  
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Homework as a grade category is anything you’re assigned to do outside of class time that isn’t graded 
as part of another project.  
 
Quizzes will be given mostly as part of homework, to encourage you to complete assigned readings in a 
timely way. I do reserve the right to give pop quizzes in class as well.

Participation: As a professional in training, it’s important for you to practice being assertive and having 
your voice heard in meetings. This is a small class, so it’s an ideal place to practice that skill if it’s one 
that’s challenging for you. Participation also includes active listening, something we’ll be studying 
explicitly as part of our interviewing skills, and you can and should use our 150 minutes per week 
together as an opportunity to practice active listening. 
 
In-class work: In this as in other professional writing courses, we will use some of our class time to work 
on tasks with the advantage of being able to collaborate with each other and with me in real time. Some 
in-class work will be possible to make up if you miss class, but other tasks will not (particularly when we 
are writing collaboratively). 
 
Interview/communication projects: Our first project is planned, and I will finalize the list of other 
specific projects we will undertake after I know a bit more about you and your interests. Each project 
will involve at least one interview and a deliverable of some sort (a written product, a presentation, or 
audio or video product). 
 
English Studies Conference: In small groups or as a single group, you will determine how you would like 
to present some portion of our work at the English Studies student conference in April. 
 
Final portfolio: In place of a final exam, you will assemble a final portfolio in which you present (a) the 
items from this class that you think would make a good representation of your skills (for a grad school or 
job application), (b) brief explanations that you could use to contextualize those work samples, and (c) a 
multi-part analysis of your development in the course, following guidelines I’ll provide closer to the end 
of the semester.

Course Description:  
“When you write, you lay out a line of words. The line of words is a miner’s pick, a wood-carver’s 
gouge, a surgeon’s probe. You wield it, and it digs a path you follow. Soon you find yourself deep in 
new territory. Is it a dead end, or have you located the real subject? You will know tomorrow, or this 
time next year.”

With online journals flourishing and print journals experience something of a renaissance, short 
fiction is in demand. Short fiction is a vast and surprisingly varied genre, and in this course we will 
investigate and practice a number of different executions, from flash fiction to short stories to 
novelettes to novellas. Special attention will be paid to linked collections of short stories, which are 
currently having their moment in the sun. We will unearth underrated classics of the genre and 
probe the work of modern experts and explore venues for and methods of publication, though our 
focus will be on the practice of writing, workshopping, and revising short fiction. Specific emphasis 
will be placed on the development of the student’s personal voice and style. 
 
This is a course on the writing of literary fiction. Genre work, such as young adult, horror, romance 
writing, and science fiction is, of course, accepted and even encouraged, but remember that the aim 
of this course is to build proficiency and even excellence in the core processes of fiction writing. 
Good literary skills can inform excellence in the writing of speculative, fabulist, horror, romantic, 
and young adult fiction.  
 
Please note, that as the instructor of a creative writing class, the professor asserts the right to discuss 
all topics that literature covers; if you are not willing to view the world as a complex place, this might 
not be the class for you. Exercises and in-class writing will also be a mandatory part of the course.

Being a fiction writer has only one real requirement: the writing of fiction. As such, the primary 
endeavor so this course is for each student to write as much as possible. Each student will workshop 
3 pieces over the course of the semester: each will be a full-length short story (3,000 to 5,000 words) 
which will be workshopped by the entire class.  
 
In addition to these writing assignments, we will perform writing exercises in many class meetings. 
You should keep a specific notebook or binder for these exercises so that you can keep track of 
them, as they will factor into your final portfolio. 
 
The portfolio is a reflection of your effort and participation in the course and will contain a brief 
introduction (1-2 double spaced pages) and revised version of your favorite fiction piece from the 
semester.

Our reading for each week of classes will be divided into two areas: craft essays and short fiction. 
The craft essays are self-explanatory, and each week of the semester will correspond to an element 
of fiction writing. The syllabus contains suggestions from the “recommended texts” section of the 
syllabus for further reading on each of these elements. We will usually read two short stories each 
week: one “classic” short story and one “contemporary” short story. While we will be reading both 
of these stories to particularly support the specific technique or craft element that we are discussing 
for that week, we will also be paying attention to commonalities within the established short fiction 
“canon” as well as significant attributes of the most lauded short fiction of today. Reading this way 
will allow us to explore class fiction while training ourselves to enter today’s fiction market. 
 
The Workshop and Critique Process: 
For our fiction workshops, we will incorporate elements adapted from Jesse Ball’s pedagogical 
practice “The Asking” Matthew Salesses’ Craft in the Real World in order to give those being 
workshopped more control in the workshop.  
 
We will work in small groups during the first half of the semester while workshopping your first 
four pieces. Then, for your longer piece we will have full class workshops. For these workshops your 
work will be due to the entire class one week before.  
 
When you receive your classmates’ longer work for class workshop, you will be required to type up a 
one-page critique in addition to writing comments on the manuscript. Bring two copies of this 
critique to workshop day – one for the student’s work you are critiquing and one for the instructor. 
 
Your critique should be laid out like this: begin with a brief summary of the piece, then explain what 
was working in the piece, and conclude with what about the piece needs improvement. Personal 
comments about the writer are inappropriate in critique as are insults of any kind. However, in the 
same vein, unfounded praise should be limited. Critique should be about the work and making the 
work better. I often find that asking questions in your critique can be helpful for those you are 
critiquing.

Participation  
• Participation means coming to class and actively participating in building classroom culture 
by speaking up, by completing in-class writing assignments, and by reading a particular day’s 
assigned material before class begins. Participation means silencing your cellular devices and 
shutting your laptops during class.  
Plagiarism and Copyright  
Just don’t plagiarize! If you have any issue completing your assignments within the assigned 
timeframe, please contact me directly before you even consider plagiarizing an assignment. I will 
work with you on a timeframe for completion. 
Eastern Illinois University considers plagiarism a serious offense under its student conduct code, 
and the penalty can be as serious as expulsion from school.

Late and Make-up Work  
• All work should be turned in complete and on time. As we are workshopping your work, it 
is key that we are getting our assignments in before the scheduled workshop. If you know 
you will be missing particular days, please let me know in advance so that we can make sure 
that everyone gets four workshops in. Of course, unforeseen things happen, and if you have 
a documented excuse for your absence I will work with you to make sure that you get credit 
for all of your work. Work submitted late without an appropriate excuse may be penalized 
up to a letter grade per day for each day it is late. 
Methods of Evaluation:  
The grades for this class will determined by points earned (1000 total points possible) and will be 
reported based on the standard grading scale. However, per IAI standards, a grade of C or higher is 
required for advancement to higher level English courses. 
• 100% to 90%: A 
• 89% to 80%: B 
• 79 to 70%: C 
• 69% to 0%: NC

Students are expected to attend class meetings as scheduled. When an absence does occur, the
