Cold War Fears and Algerian Independence: American Public Opinion on an Independent Algeria, 1954-1962
The Algerian War of Independence was a struggle by the Algerians for autonomy from their long-time colonizer and ally of the United States, France. While the independence movement is said to have started during the First World War, the war did not break out until late in 1954.1 The conflict came not even a decade after World War II, in the thick of the Cold War in which the Soviet Union and the United States competed on an international stage, and in an era in which many groups of people within Western powers held mixed feelings about decolonization. Maintaining order was important in 1950s United States, with all of the chaos of the previous decade, and there were concerns from Americans of all social statuses regarding the country’s reputation, allies, and role in protecting the world from the spread of communism
Hempcrete Curtain Walls
This research aims to scrutinize the performance, durability, and viability of hempcrete in curtain wall applications—an exploration critical to advancing sustainable construction practices. Comprising hemp hurds and lime binders, hempcrete stands as an emerging sustainable building material with promising ecological benefits. Despite its potential, there exists a notable research gap concerning its application in curtain walls, which demand rigorous structural and weatherproofing standards. The primary objective is to subject full-scale hempcrete curtain wall assemblies to ASTM standard test methods, comparing their performance with conventional materials like stone and glass. The research hypothesis posits that hempcrete will exhibit satisfactory strength, fire resistance, impact resistance, and durability, positioning it as a credible alternative for curtain wall construction, all while enhancing thermal insulation compared to standard designs. The methodological approach embraces ASTM standard test methods to ensure a systematic and comparable evaluation. ASTM E1886 will assess the structural integrity of hempcrete curtain wall specimens through simulated missile impacts. ASTM E84 will evaluate the fire resistance of hempcrete by exposing samples to a furnace and monitoring flame spread. Compressive strength, a crucial parameter, will be determined using ASTM C39, involving the compression of hempcrete cylinders until failure. Additionally, ASTM G154 will subject specimens to UV lamps, allowing for the evaluation of material deterioration over time. Anticipated outcomes involve the validation of hempcrete\u27s suitability for curtain walls, showcasing its capacity to meet or exceed industry standards. Statistical analysis, utilizing ANOVA, will facilitate a nuanced comparison against established benchmarks. Identifying deficiencies will inform enhancements in hempcrete formulations and integration techniques, providing invaluable insights into its utilization for sustainable curtain wall construction. The research demonstrating hempcrete\u27s viability as a curtain wall material holds transformative potential, influencing the construction industry towards embracing more environmentally conscious methods, and aligning with broader sustainability objectives
Population Demographics of Channel Catfish in the Lower Wabash River
Inland fisheries are experiencing increasing demands due to anthropogenic stressors, especially within large river systems that support both recreational and commercial fisheries. Riverine species are sensitive to habitat degradation, species introductions, and exploitation, so continued monitoring and management of these communities are vital to maintain abundance and diversity within these systems. The North American catfish family, Ictaluridae, supports both recreational and commercial fisheries throughout the United States. Channel Catfish Ictalurus punctatus are heavily studied and managed compared to other sport catfishes in this family because of their economic and ecological significance. One important Channel Catfish fishery exists in the lower Wabash River, which contains the longest free-flowing stretch of river east of the Mississippi. In 2015, regulations were updated to employ congruent harvest regulations in the stretch of river that Illinois and Indiana share. Since then, no study targeting Channel Catfish has occurred. However, Eastern Illinois University (EIU) has monitored the entire fish community, including Channel Catfish, in the Wabash River throughout the past decade through the Long-Term Survey and Assessment of Large River Fishes in Illinois (LTEF) program. Data from this program show a declining trend in the abundance of Channel Catfish in the Wabash. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess population parameters of Channel Catfish in the lower Wabash River and provide the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) with management recommendations to prevent a further decline in abundance. To do this, I estimated the relative abundance, size structure, condition, age structure, and growth and mortality rates of Channel Catfish in the lower 322 kilometers of the Wabash River using a multiple gear approach. Sampling consisted of alternating-current (AC) and direct-current (DC) boat electrofishing and hoop netting during the spring, summer, and fall of 2022. Results showed low relative abundance and condition in this population, but I observed a larger size and age structure compared to previous studies from 2001-2004 and 2014-2016. A Beverton-Holt yield-per-recruit model suggested current harvest regulations seem sufficient to sustain the population, as the fishing mortality estimate was below the inflection point (Fmax) for the model. Other mechanisms such as annual variation and ecological stressors may contribute to the patterns I observed in this study. I recommend that biologists prioritize a multiple-gear approach when sampling catfish, as hoop nets showed variability in catch, size, and age structure, and future studies should aim to monitor the Wabash River at an ecosystem level to detect broad-scale changes that are likely occurring

The list of faculty accomplishments is truly impressive, reflective of an engaged faculty committed to excellence and the ongoing pursuit and creation of knowledge. Many of these accomplishments occurred in collaboration with our students, who serve as co-authors, research assistants and partners in bringing these activities to fruition. In some cases, these professional ambitions transpired over many years and are a testament to persistence and tenacity. We extend a sincere message of congratulations for this diverse range of achievements, which bring distinction to our departments, colleges and more broadly to our university.
