From Screen to Classroom: The Role of Televised Narratives in Enhancing Educational Belongingness for Black American Students
This creative thesis examines the influence of televised narratives on shaping the educational experiences of Black American students, exploring the interplay between media representation and educational belonging. It proposes how televisual narratives can better reflect and support the educational identities of Black American students, aiming to foster a greater sense of belonging and representation in educational media. This document serves as an accompaniment to the center of this work, a twelve minute pilot episode that explores the challenges and triumphs of students navigating their educational journeys. This work not only provides a detailed breakdown of the episode\u27s narrative and production techniques but also illustrates how targeted televisual narratives can significantly contribute to reflecting and supporting educational aspirations and cultural identities
Unlocking AI\u27s Potential, Upholding Our Principles: An Equitable Approach for Social Studies
Artificial Intelligence (AI) holds transformative potential in social studies education, but its integration is fraught with challenges that must be navigated with care. This article delves into strategies for leveraging AI\u27s capabilities in social studies classrooms, upholding principles of academic integrity, digital citizenship, and equitable access. Our analysis of recent national assessment results highlights a decline in civics and history proficiency, underscoring an urgent need to reimagine social studies pedagogy through AI literacy. The study explores how AI can make learning more engaging and personalized, while emphasizing the necessity of developing critical perspectives on issues such as privacy, bias, and responsible use. We advocate for a nuanced, human-centered approach to ensure AI enriches social studies teaching and prepares students as ethical digital citizens. The article addresses potential risks, including exacerbating educational inequities, and offers concrete recommendations for inclusive AI literacy programs, dynamic educational policies, and human oversight of AI systems. Case examples are presented to illustrate both the successes and challenges of AI in education. Our findings suggest that with deliberate and thoughtful efforts, AI can significantly democratize social studies learning, aligning with foundational educational principles and adapting to the evolving digital landscape

Opossums and Pathogens: A Survey of Vector-Borne and Zoonotic Pathogens from Didelphis virginiana in the Midwest, USA
Didelphis virginiana are at elevated risk of exposure to many zoonotic and vector-borne pathogens (ZVBP) as a result of their unfastidious diets, large geographic ranges, and diverse habitat types. Didelphis virginiana are synanthropic animals, which is concerning considering the spillover risk of pathogens D. virginiana present as a result. 81 D. virginiana from Ohio and Illinois were screened for Rickettsia spp., Mycoplasma spp., Borrelia burgdorferi, Trypanosoma cruzi, and apicomplexan pathogens. Live D. virginiana were trapped in wire cage traps to perform venipuncture for blood collection. Samples collected as roadkill or from animal control companies were dissected and spleen samples were obtained. DNA was extracted from each specimen. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to amplify the targeted region of the DNA for each pathogen being screened. Results were visualized with gel electrophoresis. The most prevalent microorganisms in descending order were: Mycoplasma spp. (83.95%), Rickettsia spp. (44.44%), T. cruzi (43.21%), apicomplexans (37.04%), and Bo. burgdorferi (16.05%). Logistic regressions were used to test for differences in pathogen prevalence between blood and spleen sample types, residential and rural populations, Illinois regions, Illinois counties, and Illinois and Ohio populations. Trypanosoma cruzi was more likely to be detected in residential locations and DNA extracted from spleen tissue samples as opposed to DNA extracted from blood samples. Rickettsia was more likely to be detected in samples collected from Illinois. However, apicomplexan parasites were more likely to be found in Ohio. There were no significant differences between Illinois regions, or counties

Molecular Investigation of Tick-Borne Pathogens in Feral Swine (Sus scrofa) from Seven US States
Feral swine (Sus scrofa) have been proposed as part of the lifecycles of multiple tickborne pathogens (TBP). This is a result of the increase in feral swine populations and increased tick populations and geographic ranges. Few surveys exist on the TBP relevant to human and wildlife of feral swine in the US. The aim of this study is to investigate the prevalence of 10 TBP: Anaplasma spp., Borrelia spp., Cytauxzoon felis, Hepatozoon spp., Babesia spp., Mycoplasma spp., Trypanosoma cruzi, Toxoplasma gondii, Yersinia pestis, and Rickettsia spp. A total of 87 feral swine blood samples were acquired from 27 counties in 7 different states by the USDA Wildlife Services as part of feral swine control. Blood samples were screened via polymerase chain reaction for the detection of the aforementioned TBP DNA. The result indicated the presence of Mycoplasma spp. in 59 out of 87 (67.8%) of the samples. The 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis (170-193 bp) indicates a close relationship to the M. suis/M. parvum cluster. The presence of Babesia spp. was detected in 15 out of 87 (17%). The presence of Anaplasma spp. was detected in 3 feral swine. These findings imply that feral swine may be crucial to the expansion of TBP and the maintenance of its vectors. The presence of Babesia spp., Mycoplasma spp., and Anaplasma spp. are the first in feral swine as a host in the United States
