    Spatial distribution of attention during attentional blink is influenced by eye movements

    The present study examined three factors that might influence the spatial distribution. of attention after the identification of a first target during attentional blink: the maximum distance between the two targets, the spatial configuration of stimuli, and eye movements. Results showed that the U-shaped distribution of attention during attentional blink persisted in the circular configuration of stimuli irrespective of the radius of the circle. In addition, the U-shaped distribution of attention during attentional blink depends on the circular configuration of stimuli and the central fixation. When two targets appeared in noncircular configurations and eye movements were not strictly restrained, a large proportion of observers showed a gradient for the accuracy of the second target (T2) during attentional blink. However, when observers kept fixating on the central cross in a noncircular configuration, they showed a U-shaped distribution of T2 performance during attentional blink. Furthermore, observers are more likely to show a gradient distribution of T2 performance during attentional blink as their probability of fixating the first target (T1) increases. These results suggest that maintaining equal eccentricity for each stimulus is critical for producing the U-shaped distribution of attention during attentional blink

    The developmental trajectories of executive function of children and adolescents with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

    This study examined the developmental trajectories of executive function (EF) of children and adolescents with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in Han Chinese. Five hundred and fifteen children and adolescents with ADHD and 249 healthy controls took part in this study. All of them were administered four EF tests capturing inhibition, working memory, shifting and planning components. The participants were further divided into four age groups, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, and 13-15 years old, respectively, for developmental trajectories comparison. The performance of the typical developing children and adolescents aged 7-15 were reported to get stable at age 11-12 for inhibition, working memory and planning, and kept developing till age 13-15 for shifting. For inhibition and shifting, participants with ADHD displayed similar performance to the healthy controls who were 2 years younger whereas they did poorer than the healthy controls of their same age. And at age 13-15, such poorer performance disappeared for inhibition but maintained for shifting. No significant differences were found between participants with and without ADHD in working memory and planning across all age groups. The current findings suggested, compared with healthy controls, Han Chinese children and adolescents with ADHD displayed delayed developmental trajectories on inhibition and shifting, whereas they showed similar trend of development on working memory and planning.     Can Taichi Reshape the Brain? A Brain Morphometry Study

    Although research has provided abundant evidence for Taichi-induced improvements in psychological and physiological well-being, little is known about possible links to brain structure of Taichi practice. Using high-resolution MRI of 22 Tai Chi Chuan (TCC) practitioners and 18 controls matched for age, sex and education, we set out to examine the underlying anatomical correlates of long-term Taichi practice at two different levels of regional specificity. For this purpose, parcel-wise and vertex-wise analyses were employed to quantify the difference between TCC practitioners and the controls based on cortical surface reconstruction. We also adopted the Attention Network Test (ANT) to explore the effect of TCC on executive control. TCC practitioners, compared with controls, showed significantly thicker cortex in precentral gyrus, insula sulcus and middle frontal sulcus in the right hemisphere and superior temporal gyrus and medial occipito-temporal sulcus and lingual sulcus in the left hemisphere. Moreover, we found that thicker cortex in left medial occipito-temporal sulcus and lingual sulcus was associated with greater intensity of TCC practice. These findings indicate that long-term TCC practice could induce regional structural change and also suggest TCC might share similar patterns of neural correlates with meditation and aerobic exercise

    The Role of Interoception and Insular Cortex in Addiction

    Interoception is the sense of the physiological condition of the body. Recent studies suggested that interoception is involved in drug addiction and insular cortex is a key anatomical position. The neural mechanisms underlying such phenomena attract growing attention. In an effort to develop working hypotheses for future investigation, the article first reviewed the evidence of interoceptive regulation of addiction, and subsequently presented human and animal data that suggest a central role of the insular cortex in mediating interoception and addiction. On this basis, we proposed potential neurobiological mechanisms through which insular cortex may mediate drug addiction. Further, possible functional roles of neurotransmitters in the insular cortex are discussed in the context of drug addiction

    Meta-Analysis Indicates That the European GWAS-Identified Risk SNP rs1344706 within ZNF804A Is Not Associated with Schizophrenia in Han Chinese Population

    Recent genetic association studies have implicated several candidate susceptibility variants for schizophrenia among general populations. Rs1344706, an intronic SNP within ZNF804A, was identified as one of the most compelling candidate risk SNPs for schizophrenia in Europeans through genome-wide association studies (GWASs) and replications as well as large-scale meta-analyses. However, in Han Chinese, the results for rs1344706 are inconsistent, and whether rs1344706 is an authentic risk SNP for schizophrenia in Han Chinese is inconclusive. Here, we conducted a systematic meta-analysis of rs1344706 with schizophrenia in Chinese population by combining all available case-control samples (N = 12), including a total of 8,982 cases and 12,342 controls. The results of our meta-analysis were not able to confirm an association of rs1344706 A-allele with schizophrenia (p = 0.10, odds ratio = 1.06, 95% confidence interval = 0.99-1.13). Such absence of association was further confirmed by the non-superiority test (p = 0.0003), suggesting that rs1344706 is not a risk SNP for schizophrenia in Han Chinese. Detailed examinations of individual samples revealed potential sampling bias in previous replication studies in Han Chinese. The absence of rs1344706 association in Han Chinese suggest a potential genetic heterogeneity in the susceptibility of schizophrenia on this locus and also demonstrate the difficulties in replicating genome-wide association findings of schizophrenia across different ethnic populations

    Neurological soft signs discriminate schizophrenia from major depression but not bipolar disorder

    Background: Neurological soft signs (NSS) are minor neurological abnormalities, including motor, sensory, and inhibitory dysfunction. Schizophrenia and other neuropsychiatric disorders are associated with a higher prevalence of NSS. However, the relationships between NSS and schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depression are unclear. The present study aimed to examine the specificity of NSS among these three clinical groups. Method: A total of 120 demographically matched participants (30 each in schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression, and healthy controls) were recruited for the study. NSS subscales of the Cambridge Neurological Inventory (CNI) were administered to each participant. Results: Significant differences were found in the total score of NSS (p<0.01), and the subscale scores for motor coordination (p<0.01), sensory integration (p = 0.01) and disinhibition (p<0.01). Both patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder showed more total NSS signs than healthy controls (p<0.01). Patients with schizophrenia also showed more total NSS signs than patients with major depression (p = 0.02). Both patients with schizophrenia and patients with bipolar disorder showed more motor coordination signs than healthy controls and patients with major depression (p<0.05). Moreover, compared with healthy controls, patients with schizophrenia showed more disinhibition signs (p<0.01), while patients with bipolar disorder showed more sensory integration signs (p<0.01). Discriminant analysis showed 77.5% of correct classification of patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder from patients with major depression and healthy controls. Conclusions: NSS are not unique to schizophrenia, but are also found in bipolar disorder, while patients with major depression are comparable to normal controls. Our results suggest that NSS, especially motor-coordination signs, can differentiate schizophrenia from major depression but not bipolar disorder. Our results may provide further evidence to support the similarity between schizophrenia and bipolar disorder from the dimension of behavioral expression. (c) 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved

    Repeated retrieval during working memory is sensitive to amnestic mild cognitive impairment

    Study of repeated learning mechanisms has been limited in amnestic mild cognitive impairment, a preclinical stage of Alzheimer disease modifiable by cognitive rehabilitation. We assessed repeated contextual working memory decline as an indicator of amnestic mild cognitive impairment in a sample of 45 older adults recruited from the tertiary care setting. Results indicated that contextual working memory impairment distinguished adults with preclinical disease from those without impairment despite similar overall cognitive performance, and comparison of the indicator with standard-of-care neuropsychological measures indicated discriminant validity. Contextual working memory impairment may represent a novel predictor of Alzheimer disease conversion risk

    Spontaneous recovery of motion and face aftereffects

    The ability of the visual system to rapidly adjust to changing environmental conditions is one of its key characteristics. Environmental changes can occur over a variety of timescales, however, and it remains unknown how the visual system adapts to these. Does a single mechanism control adaptation across all timescales, or is adaptation subserved by multiple mechanisms, each of which is tuned to its preferred duration? To address this question, we conducted three experiments in which subjects viewed motion (Exp. 1 and 2) or faces (Exp. 3) in a sequence designed to produce opposing aftereffects. A first adapter was presented for a relatively long duration, while a second one was presented only long enough to extinguish the effects of the initial adapter. Continued measurement of aftereffects revealed a spontaneous recovery of adaptation caused by the initial, longer-lasting adapter in all three experiments. This pattern of results suggests that adaptation in the visual system generally reflects a combination of multiple temporally-tuned mechanisms. (C) 2013 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd.     Dual Processes of Oculomotor Capture by Abrupt Onset: Rapid Involuntary Capture and Sluggish Voluntary Prioritization

    The present study showed that there are two distinctive processes underlying oculomotor capture by abrupt onset. When a visual mask between the cue and the target eliminates the unique luminance transient of an onset, the onset still attracts attention in a top-down fashion. This memory-based prioritization of onset is voluntarily controlled by the knowledge of target location. But when there is no visual mask between the cue and the target, the onset captures attention mainly in a bottom-up manner. This transient-driven capture of onset is involuntary because it occurs even when the onset is completely irrelevant to the target location. In addition, the present study demonstrated distinctive temporal characteristics for these two processes. The involuntary capture driven by luminance transients is rapid and brief, whereas the memory-based voluntary prioritization of onset is more sluggish and long-lived

    Psychological Traces of China's Socio-Economic Reforms in the Ultimatum and Dictator Games

    Can traces of rapid socio-economic changes within a society be reflected in experimental games? The post-Mao reforms in China provide a unique natural quasi-experiment to study people from the same society who were raised with radically different values about distribution of wealth and altruistic behavior. We tested whether the size of offers in the ultimatum and dictator games are an increasing function of the number of years Chinese citizens experienced of the Mao era ("planned economy"). For the cohort that lived throughout the entire Mao era, we found that mean offers in the two games were substantially higher than what is typically offered in laboratory studies. These offers were also higher than those of two younger Chinese cohorts. In general, the amount offered decreased with less time spent under Mao, while in the oldest group in which every member spent the same amount of time under Mao, the younger members tended to offer more, suggesting an additional effect of early education under Mao and contradicting the alternative hypothesis that generosity increases with age. These results suggest that some of the observed individual differences in the offers made in experimental games can be traced back to the values of the socio-economic era in which individuals grew up
