La “giustizia cinematografica”: un’alternativa al processo mediatico?

    Get PDF
[“Cinematographic Justice”: an Alternative to Trial by Media?] The concept of “cinematographic justice” refers to films, not so numerous, that tell stories about criminal proceedings that are still in progress. These are films which, at least under certain conditions, can influence public opinion and, through it, the dynamics of the proceedings. Although there are critical points, starting from the presumption of innocence, the impression is that the “elegance” of the cinema can be a partial alternative to the noisy mobilization of public opinion through the trial by media, especially in those cases where the distance between Law and Justice becomes macroscopic and intolerable

[“Gaetano’s Destiny”. Narrative suggestions on the subject of digital hate] Despite being a decidedly long-standing and controversial phenomenon, in recent times, hate speech has reappeared forcefully in the limelight, also due to the increased virulence conferred on it by the encounter with the Internet and – in particular – with Social Networks. Hence the need to reflect again on the issue of hate speech, in order to outline its contours, to underline its peculiarities and to envisage possible prevention and contrast strategies

Noisy signals: do ratings’ volatility depend on the length of the consumption span?

    Get PDF
This paper investigates the informational content of online reviews. For the case of hotels, we model how the length of the stay shapes the variance of review scores. Grounded on violations of temporal monotonicity, errors in recall and hedonic adaptation theories, we first present a characterization of how the consumption span affects the non-deterministic component of consumer satisfaction. Next, we conduct an empirical analysis using more than 525,000 individual reviews from Booking.com in 5 major European cities. Under a heteroskedastic framework, we document that individual ratings’ volatility decreases with the length of the stay. This implies that online ratings from short stayers (short consumption episodes) are noisy signals of the underlying hotel quality. Furthermore, we show that greater volatility in hotel ratings translates into a lower share of useful reviews for subsequent consumers. Our findings offer relevant insights for platform design operators about the sources of ratings’ volatility and how this affects social learning

Il processo. La storia. La memoria. Note su «La sentenza» di Giacomo Manzoni (1960)

[Trial. History. Memory. Notes on La sentenza by Giacomo Manzoni (1960)] Traditionally categorized as one of the first examples of musical theatre of the avant-garde post-Weber era in Italy, La sentenza by Giacomo Manzoni (1960) represents a characteristic demonstration of the path taken by the Milan composer to explore the thematic traditions of law and justice systems through research and experimental music. The interpretation taken from Foucault’s material - the idea of heterotopia seen as “another space” that suspends, neutralizes or inverts the relationship that it depicts - endeavouring to analyze some aspects of the opera’s musical dramaturgy by aiming to highlight the complex plot that connects the plurality of individual narratives to the “monopolistic truth” of the law and its foundation. The backdrop of La sentenza expressed the common need of an entire generation to leave behind the horrors of the Second World War and attribute an equal meaning to the anxiety of political renewal and democratic participation which began with the new constitutional order

Data on root morphology of grapevine plants subjected to application of urea: effects of different methods and rates

    No full text
The data contained in this dataset refer to the effect of different method and rate of nitrogen (N) on grapevine root growth. Plants were planted in 2011 and, since 2014, they were subjected to surface and fertigation N application, at rates of 0, 40 and 100 kg N ha^-1 year^-1. Root system morphology was evaluated with the minirhizotron technique in the 2016/2017 and 2017/2018 seasons. In the dataset information on root number (alive and dead), surface area of root, length and diameter are reported

Berlin Alexanderplatz: paradigma narrativo della crisi costituzionale di Weimar

[Berlin Alexanderplatz: narrative paradigm of the constitutional crisis of Weimar] Berlin Alexanderplatz deeply reveals the landscape of the human society from where this novel originates, with its anxieties, ambitions and deceptions, but, at the same time, it expresses universal contents, capable of surviving its own time and becoming an admonishment for the next generations and a source of inspiration for the jurists of our time. Our paper explores the relationship between social crisis and constitutional crisis of Weimar, scrutinizing narration and law on the trail of Döblin and highlighting how the literary legacy of this author shows all its newness in the current time of accelerated transformations, encouraging the interpretative sensibility of the jurist in the direction of an aware defense of constitutional solidarity as an antidote to the new threat of an imminent barbarity

Do Bishops Matter for Politics? Evidence From Italy

    Get PDF
This paper studies whether and how religious leaders affect politics. Focusing on Italian dioceses in the period from 1948 to 1992, we find that the identity of the bishop in office explains a significant amount of the variation in the vote share for the Christian Democracy party (DC). This result is robust to several exercises that use different samples and time windows. Zooming into the mechanism, we find that two characteristics of bishops matter: (i) his political culture, and (ii) his interaction with the population—the latter being measured using state-of-the-art text-analysis techniques

The Spatial Drivers of Discrimination: Evidence From Anti-Muslim Fake News in India

    Get PDF
This paper studies how discriminatory fake news arises and spatially diffuses. We focus on India at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic: on March 30, a Muslim convention (the Tablighi Jamaat) in New Delhi became publicly recognized as a COVID hotspot, and the next day, fake news on Muslims intentionally spreading the virus spiked. Using Twitter data, we build a comprehensive novel dataset of georeferenced tweets to identify anti-Muslim fake news. We find, in cross-sectional and difference-in-difference settings, that discriminatory fake news became much more widespread after March 30 (1) in New Delhi, (2) in districts closer to New Delhi, and (3) in districts with higher social media interactions with New Delhi. Further, we investigate whether deeply rooted historical factors may have also played a role in the diffusion of anti-Muslim fake news: we show that, after March 30, discriminatory fake news was more common in districts historically exposed to attacks by Muslim groups

This dataset contains models, data and results, and supplementary figures and material related to the article "Comparative Validation of two Patient-Specific Modelling Pipelines for Predicting Knee Joint Forces During Level Walking". This dataset is built from the last four editions of the open source dataset of the "Grand Challenge Competition to Predict In Vivo Knee Loads" (Fregly et al., 2012), which is publicly available on the SimTK platform (https://simtk.org/projects/kneeloads)
