Contextual Narratives in Archaeology: Reframing Human History through Sustainability
This thesis proposes a contextual approach to the elaboration of narratives in archaeology, suggesting to reframe the history of humanity via parameters of sustainability, negotiated together by experts and their broader public in terms of social and environmental well-being.
My suggestion is a shift in perspectives about our past and present, away from the destructive discourses majorly responsible for the current ecosystem crisis. Therefore, the aim is to encourage meaningful alternatives and different paradigms favouring the radical actions required today to deal with this existential threat.
To do so, I go through the deconstruction of familiar concepts of ‘progress’ and ‘heritage’ as well as acknowledging the role of archaeology into the making of such dominant narratives, in order to possibly lay the ground for a critically aware stance on true sustainability via the discipline

Contextual Narratives in Archaeology: Reframing Human History through Sustainability. Survey dataset
The current dataset is associated with the Open Access publication of the Master Degree thesis text “Contextual Narratives in Archaeology: Reframing Human History through Sustainability” (openly accessible at https://doi.org/10.6092/unibo/amsacta/7300). It collects the files related to the online survey carried out for the case study, namely an online questionnaire presented to the cultural association of the village of Canavaccio, meant to preliminary explore the local perception around archaeology as connected to sustainability. The data, here provided in a machine-readable format, are already described in a discursive way in the related publication chapter
Envisioning Transitions. Bodies, buildings, and boundaries
“Transition” is the dynamic process of changing state, going beyond, crossing over, and passing from one point to the next. The signification of the word is close to that of evolution, modification, mutation, and transformation, all of which are confined into a strictly restricted timeframe.
Etymologically, “transitions” can be nothing else than temporary: they appear silently, burst, violently establish, and gradually disappear into reality. In their blinding momentariness, “transitions” bear with them the positive undertone of change and renewal, along with the hopefulness of that which is unknown.
If the term “transition” recurs regularly in the contemporary vocabulary of architecture and design cultures, this repetition reveals a period characterized by overlapping and sequential changes. The word is without a doubt overused, but not without reason. Indeed, we find ourselves in an unusually extended period of consecutive “transitions”, overwhelmingly undefined in temporality and ambitions. As we are witnessing societies go through stark demographic, political, economic, and cultural changes, the intersecting problematics (e.g., ecological, digital, pandemic, etc.) form a rather complex topography of change, negatively charged by the instability of dilated time and the uncertainty of undefined destination.
The word is employed with the confidence of a natural process, as if it were a storm, and while we affirm our existence in “transition”, we nod our troubled times away.
Whether positively or negatively perceived, “transitions” form bridges between histories. Yet, what does it actually mean to be in “transition”? Can we define it as an autonomous and productive period whose importance could go beyond a starting and an ending date? How are “transitions” impacting and being impacted by human spaces, the built environment, and design cultures? What are some concrete, practical case studies that demonstrate how “transitions” could affect architecture and design cultures while emphasizing the role that these disciplines play in transitional processes?
It is within this backdrop that we put forward the theme of “transition”—in all its simplicity and complexity
Centro Culturale Atarazanas.
[Women in art and law: image and representation] This paper investigates the normative role that the artistic, social and literary representation of women has had on the juridi-cal concept of female representation. The paper highlights a fil rouge that links all the different topics covered: Rousseau’s Discourse on Inequality, the poetic controver-sies between the poet Ecouchard Lebrun and the poetess Constance De Salm, the ban on women from representing the nude in fine arts academies, the exclusion of wom-en from the legal professions, the elaboration of the italian legal category of infirmi-tas sexus, the meaningful history of the constitutional creative process of the art. 51 cost. it
[The Legacy of the Good Men. Falcone, il tempo sospeso del volo by Nicola Sani and Falcone e Borsellino by Marco Tutino]. The essay examines two recent operatic works: Falcone e Borsellino. L’eredità dei giusti by Marco Tutino and Falcone, il tempo sospeso del volo by Nicola Sani. These operas represent two different examples of a “musical theatre of memory” that, bringing on stage two protagonists of Italian history, interrogate the audience about the legacy left by these two pivotal figures, who paid with their life their desire of justice
Are Bio-Based Plastics The Future For Toy Applications?
This report summarises the findings of a multi-stakeholder dialogue conducted by the University of Bologna on November 11th 2022 at Ecomondo1, and presented on March22nd, 2023 at the bio!TOY20232 conference.
The initiative is part of BIO-PLASTICS EUROPE project and aims to investigate the potential of bio-based plastics to increase the sustainability of the toy industry. In the form of focus group, the discussion was joined by experts and stakeholders from public and private organisations representing the whole toy value chain.
With the use of system thinking and multi-dimensional analysis, the findings reveal that bio-based plastics have high potential to contribute to the sustainability of the toy industry if:
1. Eco-design for recycling criteria are defined
2. Strict methodology to assess environmental benefits is established
3. Robust communication about product sustainability is introduced
4. Clear information about the bio-based content is provided
5. Rigorous assessment of recyclability and biodegradability properties in range environments is performed.
It follows that bio-based plastics are not conceived as a stand-alone solution but as one alternative in a more comprehensive sustainability roadmap.
These elements reveal the necessity for a systemic joint policy intervention in the sector oriented to build up new business ecosystems, going beyond the boundaries of a single business to embrace collective actions
