PHILALETHES, OR THE ʽDANTE KINGʼ JOHANN VON SACHSEN (1801-1873). After a brief historical-biographical presentation of Johann von Sachsen alias Philalethes, this paper takes into consideration the translation activity of the Saxon prince (and then king), who transposed Dante Alighieri’s "Divine Comedy" in German. Particular attention is paid to the paratexts of Philalethes’ work, i.e. the introductions, in-depth analyses, and footnotes. From a methodological point of view, the historical-biographical approach, the theories of cultural studies and the paradigms of cultural transfer between Italy and Germany will be used. Furthermore, the philological and translation aspects adopted by Johann von Sachsen in the creation of his exemplary translation will be considered. The aim of the work is to highlight the precision and philological accuracy of the translation by Philalethes, from which King Johann von Sachsen’s competence and erudition emerge

Iconology of Justice. Rhetoric and Law in The Calumny by Sandro Botticelli

    Get PDF
This contribution proposes a rhetorical reading of The Calumny by Sandro Botticelli, a tempera painting on panel executed between 1494 and 1497 and preserved in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. Recovering the classical interpretation of trial in Renaissance culture, Botticelli defines the legal value of Justice through the figure of antithesis, depicting the form of an unfair trial and the oblivion of truth in judgment. Botticelli employs an ekphrastic technique, typical of Greek culture, and reinterprets mythology using a modern language. The explanation follows three methodological levels of inquiry into the work: 1) an analysis of the origin of painting in the literary genre of rhetorical ékphrasis in Greek culture and during the Renaissance; 2) an iconographic description of an unfair trial, represented by The Calumny, through the exegesis of the meaning of rhetorical forms, historical context, and allegorical figures; 3) an iconological interpretation of the painting (in the sense of Erwin Panofsky) as a paradigm of the idea of classical in the modern age, achieved through the identification of eight dialectical oppositions in the figurative representation. In conclusion, the study leads to three meanings (historical, cultural, and theoretical) that can be derived from the work by Botticelli on the concept of the classical. In this way, the value of the classical is explained through the relationship between truth and trial

[Ot idei mirovogo radio u Khlebnikova - v budushchee] One of Velimir Khlebnikov’s summative concepts was the utopia he created in his manifesto Radio of the Future (autumn 1921). Here were fused Nietzschean ideas and metaphors; anticipations of technological Futurism coming from Italy; Russian messianic expectations, and premonitions, later embodied in the ideas of Vernadsky’s “noosphere”; tendencies to deify the Machine and the Mechanical. Reflecting on the artistic artefact: the giant, divine image of the “samoglas”, the poet expressed his thoughts about the world associations of people’s spirits. In the essay, we will consider the utopian concept framework: from premonitions of the world web of information, grasping the cognitive, organizational and creative functions of the new media, dreams of the spiritual unity of mankind – to Khlebnikov's loose imaginations, the text language born in a difficult period of his life – with the knowledge of the further development of the “radio theme” in the work of Russian writers, up to the present time

The HFValid dataset is composed of 101 calibrated CT scans of whole femurs, the corresponding segmentations, and selected anatomical landmarks. The CT scans were collected at Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute (IOR) from 1999 to 2016 for surgical planning of hip arthroplasty at the contralateral femur. In this version the image calibrations have been updated based a shrinked segmentation of the phantom so as to prevent partial volume effects

[Science Fiction in the service of the Law: the experience of the Red Team] The contribution of literature and of the overall field of the humanities is functional to jurists not only in order to interpret the law, but also in its planning and drafting phase. The reflection on legal drafting and on the stakeholders’ participation in the elaboration of public policies and regulatory acts has long been mature, but, so far, it has neglected the opportunity of gathering inputs from actors engaged in these sectors, even outside the disciplines in which they are directly concerned. Especially interesting, in this connection, is the contribution that science fiction can provide, in a society characterized by swift technological developments and in which artificial intelligence is extending its possible applications to every area of activity. And indeed, science fiction often allows to imagine future scenarios that should be considered on time. Very significant, in this perspective, is the French government’s experience that, through the Red Team project, involved writers, screenwriters and science fiction designers for the elaboration of military policy for the next decades. An example that could well also be used in other contexts of legislative drafting, where the contribution of the arts could be useful not only in the moment of application of the law, to define the terms of the scenarios in which the operator carries out his activity, but also in the initial stage of the law

[The “anime” towards the pedagogy of fundamental rights and values]. In the mid-1970s, just as the Italian Constitutional Court was affirming the legitimacy of private television stations for the first time, the monopolist state television (Rai) included in its programming the animation works of Japanese production better known under the denomination “anime” (アニメ). Strongly criticized in the period of their first programming, due to the contents, according to some, not suitable for children, “anime” were subsequently accepted by most, albeit mainly confined to the context of entertainment. This report, briefly retracing the most compelling plots of the anime revolution of the 70s, pursues the intention of stimulating some reflections on the contents of greatest interest to the jurist and which can be placed in the pedagogy of fundamental rights and values

Women in Law.

    Get PDF
[Women in Law. An exception to the rule]. In the legal context, history, literature and art give us an opportunity to talk about the progress of women in the legal professions, their opposed entry, the difficulties of a correct meritocratic and non-discriminatory selection. While the debut of women judges has a precise date, the descent into the field in the forensic arena was more bumpy. The virulence invective of Valerio Massimo against the impudent Caia Afrania, the toga “denied” to Lidia Poët are some examples of an aspiration not shared, judged as an elusive utopia, fraught with dangers for the social order of those times
