Linguacultural Spaces. Inclusion, Extension and Identification in Language and Society. M3
The idea of putting together a collection of studies about Linguacultural Spaces: Inclusion, Extension and Identification in Discourse and Society developed originally from the collaboration between academics at the Centre for Linguistic-Cultural Studies of the University of Bologna (CeSLiC) and at the School of Critical Studies at the University of Glasgow, particularly in connection with the conference Diversity and Inclusion: Overcoming Fragmentation, organised in Bologna by the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures (LILEC) of the University of Bologna on 21-23 February 2019, within its multiyear DIVE-IN Research Project.
On the back of the collaboration between CeSLiC and Glasgow’s School of Critical Studies, a Memorandum of Understanding between the two institutions was signed in September 2019, in order to further collaborative research. Within this agreement, a yearly postgraduate symposium is organized to enhance the collaborative ethos of the agreement and to create broader inter-institutional ties through the inclusion of the School of Humanities and Digital Sciences at the University of Tilburg and the School of Modern Languages and Cultures in Glasgow. Each of these institutions has an active research culture in the sociolinguistics of diversity and inclusion and this volume reflects this spirit cooperation as well as the impact it has on PhD students’ research.
The book includes eight chapters by PhD students from Glasgow and Bologna who presented their studies in the May 2022 edition of the annual symposium Linguacultural Spaces: Inclusion, Extension and Identification in Discourse and Society. It explores various aspects of linguistic and cultural diversity, inclusion and identification, from a variety of theoretical and methodological angles, i.e. ecolinguistics, gender studies, multimodality, critical discourse analysis, travel literature, foreign language teaching, language contact in post-colonial settings, and media literacy. The red thread running through this book is discourse, seen from a variety of points of view showing how it can both promote and prevent social cohesion, and how fundamental its role is to articulate identity and belonging in inclusive and diverse manners
La piazza e il palazzo. Populismo e antipopulismo in Fuente Ovejuna e ne I promessi sposi
[The square and the palace. Populism and anti-populism in Fuente Ovejuna and I promessi sposi] The square and the palace represent two symbolic and opposite places. The former is usually connected to the context of public discussions and confrontations (and sometimes riots) dealing with the political deliberations assumed or to be assumed by the latter, interpreted as the seat of authority and power (and sometimes abuse). The judgement on these two symbolic polarities differs, however, depending on the author. In this case, I will analyse in parallel the comedy by Félix Lope de Vega, Fuente Ovejuna (publ. 1619) and Chapter XII of I Promessi Sposi (The Betrothed) by Alessandro Manzoni (publ. 1840-42), which famously tells of the assault against the Forno delle Grucce in Milan, 1628. Interestingly, both works deal with the government of Spain in the 15th and 17th centuries respectively, but while de Vega seems very close to some current social and political phenomena related to the so-called “populism”, Manzoni shows to be quite critical towards such kind of behaviours
[The City and its Margins. Asylums and Female Alienation in Edmondo De Amicis’ Giardino della follia] In 1899, Edmondo De Amicis published Nel giardino della follia (In the Garden of Madness): a narrative reportage about his encounter with women locked up within the walls of an asylum. By analyzing the narrative structure of De Amicis’ work, this contribution examines the relationship between the narrative of urban spaces and the medical and juridical discourse. The aim is to highlight the peculiar power relations underlying the labelling and categorisation of mental diseases on the eve of law no. 36 of 14 February 1904, which represented the first attempt to dictate an organic discipline for psychiatric assistance in liberal Italy. Under the outline, Nel giardino della follia expressed a series of unresolved tensions in the season of positivism, a series of ambiguities capable of revealing the set of contradictions and dysfunctions that would characterise the discipline of asylum confinement in Italy until the 'Psychiatric Revolution' of the 1960s and 1970s
Piano di gestione dati (Data Management Plan - DMP) del progetto di ricerca "Support Eco-Victims: strategies and tools for supporting rights and compensation of environmental harm’s victims.
[Zhivoe nasledie Khlebnikova] This article deals with the problem of Khlebnikov’s heritage and its influence on Russian poets. It shows different ways in which the poets interact with Khlebnikov’s texts, with his insights and discoveries in the field of poetics.
Authors of the second half of the twentieth century engage in a dialogue with Khlebnikov, dedicating poems to him, using techniques he discovered. Khlebnikov is presented as “the greatest poet” of the twentieth century (as defined by R.O. Jakobson), as the trunk of a large tree, from which branches and young shoots arise. In fact, through new generations of poets, Khlebnikov enters the future and thus acquires immortality
INTELLIMAN. WP5. Grasping, Manipulation and Arm-Hand Coordination. T5_3. Understanding and Reasoning Manipulation Task Structures. Genetic Algorithm in Robotic Planning. v0
The dataset is related to results of a genetic algorithm able to evaluate a suitable path for robotic manipulation of elastic objects. The goal is to find a path, given an initial and final position, that accounts for the distance covered by the robot while minimizing the forces perceived. These forces are generated by flexible objects that are difficult to model analytically. The proposed model-free approach considers these elastic forces in the fitness functions, making the genetic algorithm stiffness-aware. Furthermore, a dynamic exploration strategy allows for the convergence to effective solutions in a finite number of iterations. The data were produced in the framework of Horizon Europe INTELLIMAN project and are presented in the publication:
