Reducing the digital divide for marginalized households
Digital skills are increasingly essential for full participation in modern life. Yet many low-income families face a dual digital divide: limited access to technology and limited ability to use it effectively. These gaps can undermine adults' ability to support their children's education, restrict access to public services, and reduce their own employability. Despite growing policy attention, rigorous evidence on how to close these gaps—especially among disadvantaged adults in high-income countries—remains scarce. We evaluate the impact of a comprehensive digital inclusion program in Turin, Italy, targeting 859 low-income families with school-aged children. Participants were randomly assigned to a control group or one of two treatment arms, each combining a free tablet with internet access and digital literacy training of different durations. One year later, treated participants reported large improvements in digital skills and daily technology use. Parents also became more confident in guiding their children's online activities, more engaged in digital parenting, and more likely to access public services digitally. We find no short-run effects on employment or job search behavior, but treated participants expressed greater optimism about future training prospects. Effects are statistically similar across the two training intensities, suggesting that once basic barriers are removed, digital engagement can become self-sustaining. Mediation analysis confirms that digital skills—not just access—are key drivers of these outcomes. Sequential effects are particularly strong in the domains of social inclusion and parenting. The findings underscore the importance of addressing both financial and learning constraints and suggest that bundled interventions can foster inclusive digital participation
A tax is a signal: theory and evidence
We propose a theoretical model in which uninformed consumers update their beliefs about the health effects of sugar in soft drinks through two sequential policies: an information campaign and a sugar tax. The information campaign is modeled as a costless signal (cheap talk), while the tax policy is modeled as a costly signal. While the information campaign conveys only partial information, we show that the tax policy can generate a fully revealing equilibrium, thereby transmitting accurate information to consumers. Our empirical analysis supports the theoretical predictions. Exploiting the announcement (on March 16, 2016) of the tiered structure of the UK Soft Drinks Industry Levy, we provide evidence consistent with the tax policy functioning as an effective signaling device. Immediately after the tax announcement and before implementation, both the purchased volumes and the sugar content of taxed soft drinks declined, while purchases of exempted sugar-sweetened beverages remained unchanged. In contrast, the preceding information campaign had a similar effect across all soft drinks, regardless of their sugar content
Towards City Museum as Praxis: Outlining a Critical Mediation Strategy & Analyzing City Museums and Exhibitions
This thesis emerges from the feelings of isolation, confusion and powerlessness related to contemporary urban life and the complexity of the often-incomprehensive mechanisms that shape our cities. The main objective is to propose the outline of a critical mediation strategy for museums and exhibitions in and about the city, that can work towards empowering citizens in seeking their right to the city and spatial justice. The first part begins with an overview of the city museum context, that includes its historical development, and the discourse related to its practice, which focuses on the social role and relevancy of the museum as a dialogical space. Subsequently, the theoretical and methodological framework of this strategy is developed, based on Paulo Freire’s critical pedagogy model and enriched with insightful writings on the urban condition by Henri Lefebvre and David Harvey. The mediation framework is further informed by the various interpretations that the right to the city acquired recently inside the city museum context, as well as by the critical spatial perspectives of Edward Soja and Stavros Stavrides. In the second part, the proposed methodological framework is used as an analytical one to study museum and exhibition cases in and about Athens, Bologna and Berlin. This detailed analysis unveils different degrees in which the proposed approach is used in specific existing museum practices, key factors that can determine its implementation, as well as the fact that when critical mediation concepts are applied to the museum itself, it can move closer towards acting as a passage from reflection to action, towards praxis. Alongside the elaborated outline for a critical mediation strategy, the thesis’ contribution “towards city museum as praxis” includes examples of how it can be applied in mediation moments of the analyzed museums that were diagnosed as anti-dialogical, while further research inquiries are also proposed
WRITE. Performance of Genders. Dataset
The current dataset is associated with the Open Access publication “Performance of Genders: Marking Masculine/Feminine Identities through Body and Calligraphy”, MediAzioni, 2025, 46. It collects the metadata descriptions of the main artworks/series analysed in the publication as formalised in the “WRITE digital archive”, that is the semantic web digital archive of the WRITE project (G.A. 949645). Each jsonld file contains the metadata related to the artwork(s)/series itself/themselves, its author(s), its Calli-Writing Unit(s) (CWU – artwork content unit with calligraphic features), and, if any, related exhibition(s), artwork(s), and literary work(s).The artworks/series were selected from a large number of works included in the archive as the most representative of different approaches/perspectives on gender issues in Chinese performance art. The dataset also includes the transcription of the two artists’ interviews cited in the publication. The data, here provided in a machine-readable format, are already described in a discursive way in the related publication

Racconti psichici”)
