A (G)host of Other Selves: How Self-Translation Inhabits Allograph Translation in Doireann Ní Ghríofa’s A Ghost in the Throat
Through an analysis of Irish writer Doireann Ní Ghríofa’s A Ghost in the Throat (2020), this paper contemplates both how death inhibits a writer’s ability to translate their own work and how self-translation might be creatively enacted to overcome this existential boundary. The paper examines the close affinity that Ní Ghríofa establishes with 18th-century poet Eibhlín Dubh Ní Chonaill, and posits that this closeness encourages readers to perceive Ní Ghríofa’s Irish-to-English translation of Ní Chonaill’s Caoineadh Airt Uí Laoghaire – which appears in the second part of the book – as a kind of self-translation. Considering the construction, content and context of A Ghost in the Throat, the analysis sheds new light on which features of self-translation tend to be marginalized, who self-translation excludes, and what an ethic of self-translation might look like
The Translation of Short Story Collections from Basque into Spanish
Framed within a context of endogenous bilingualism, this paper examines the transfer of contemporary short story collections for adults originally published in Basque into Spanish. The study will permit us to consider centre-periphery and power dynamics between a minor literature and a hegemonic literature. As self-translation is a frequent phenomenon in this language pair, this study will offer us the opportunity to know to what extent self-translation is a common practice in the case of short stories, and whether it has characteristic features. The paper presents a quantitative perspective through the study of an ad hoc constructed catalogue, as well as a qualitative study, based on paratextual and macrostructural analyses. By addressing the translation of short story collections in a context of language contact, this paper will help identify the conventions when translating works of this specific literary genre as well as reflect on the forms adopted by self-translation
Self-Translation as a Path to Recognition and Creative Augmentation in the Context of Transcultural Literature: A Personal Journey
This paper explores the practice of self-translation as both a creative and academic pursuit within the broader field of transcultural studies. Drawing from personal experience as a bilingual (English/Italian) writer and researcher, it examines self-translation’s motivations, processes, and outcomes. Anchored in theoretical frameworks and supported by research conducted during a sshrc-funded postdoctoral fellowship, the study investigates how self-translation shapes literary identity and fosters integration into diverse literary landscapes. The discussion also reflects on self-translation as a tool for creative augmentation, offering a multidimensional lens for interpreting bilingual texts
Sociologica Curated. Repurposing Generative AI for Social Research: Going Native with Artificial Intelligence
The rapid advancement of Generative AI technologies, and particularly LLMs, has ushered in a new era of possibilities — but also a whole new set of interrogation — for social research. This symposium brings together a set of contributions that collectively explore the diverse ways in which Generative AI could be “repurposed” in a digital methods fashion
Simposio 2G-C 2025: Sondaggi
Data related to the influence of wood treatments on volatile profile of Brandy Italiano
The dataset includes raw chemical data on Italian brandies aged for 8 months in 350-litre oak barrels whose wood was undergone different treatments. Woods for cooperage were naturally seasoned for two different periods of time (24 or 36 months) and were toasted at two different degrees (light or heavy). The study assessed the influence of these different treatments on endogenous and wood-derived compounds of the geographical indication Brandy Italiano. High-performance liquid chromatography coupled with photodiode array and fluorescence detection (HPLC-DAD-FLD) was used to quantify most wood-derived compounds while solid phase extraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (SPE-GC-MS) was used to determine the overall volatile composition including certain additional wood-derived compounds
Scientific-Executive Cooperation Report on the Research Project “Architectural Technology Transfer on the Silk Road: Iranian Double-Shell Domes and the West” 2016–2025
This report highlights the history of the and the scientific results of the DOMES project on medieval dome-making architecture in Italy and Iran and the collaboration between Dr. Lorenzo Vigotti and Prof. Hadi Safaeipour
I cuori dimenticati dei luoghi. Appunti su trascendenza, comunità e recupero del territorio
[Places’ forgotten hearts. Notes on transcendence, community and land recovery] Religious heritage is central to Italy’s urban and cultural landscape. Despite the historical value, more and more churches and monasteries are losing their original purpose because of secularisation and social demographic changes. Many religious sites end up underused, vacant, or even demolished. Out of all historic buildings, adaptive reuse of the religious heritage sites is particularly valued as a significant community amenity. When churches are no longer used as a place of worship, the buildings are often redeveloped into homes, cultural centers, hotels, or libraries, as it comes in Pirandello’s novel Il fu Mattia Pascal
Dentro le mura domestiche: riflessioni da un'indagine nazionale sulla violenza intrafamiliare
La ricerca è stata realizzata grazie all’accordo di collaborazione, stipulato tra l’Associazione Famiglie
in Rete E.T.S.
