Hydroxyapatite and Other Calcium Phosphates for the Conservation of Cultural Heritage: A Review

    Get PDF
The present paper reviews the methods and the performance of in situ formation of calcium phosphates (CaP) for the conservation of materials belonging to cultural heritage. The core idea is to form CaP (ideally hydroxyapatite, HAP, the most stable CaP at pH > 4) by reaction between the substrate and an aqueous solution of a phosphate salt. Initially proposed for the conservation of marble and limestone, the treatment has been explored for a variety of different substrates, including sandstones, sulphated stones, gypsum stuccoes, concrete, wall paintings, archaeological bones and paper. First, the studies aimed at identifying the best treatment conditions (e.g., nature and concentration of the phosphate precursor, solution pH, treatment duration, ionic and organic additions to the phosphate solution, mineralogical composition of the new CaP phases) are summarized. Then, the treatment performance on marble and limestone is reviewed, in terms of protective and consolidating effectiveness, compatibility (aesthetic, microstructural and physical) and durability. Some pilot applications in real case studies are also reported. Recent research aimed at extending the phosphate treatment to other substrates is then illustrated. Finally, the strengths of the phosphate treatment are summarized, in comparison with alternative products, and some aspects needing future research are outlined

MADFORWATER. WP2. Adaptation of wastewater treatment technologies for agricultural reuse. Task2.3. Agro-industrial wastewater treatment. Subtask2.3.1. Treatment of olive mill wastewater. Phenolic compounds adsorption - process optimization, life cycle assessment and cost-benefit analysis

Olive mill wastewaters (OMWs) represent a major environmental concern due to their high organic load and phytotoxic activity. The selective recovery of phenolic compounds (PCs) from OMW represents a promising technology, thanks to the antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of PCs. The goal of this work was to optimize a process of PC adsorption / desorption on resin XAD16N, and to perform the life cycle assessment (LCA) and cost-benefit analysis (CBA) of the process. Adsorption tests were conducted at different velocities in a 1.8-m column packed with resin XAD16N. The optimal superficial velocity and retention time (2.78 m/h and 0.56 h) allowed the attainment of satisfactory performances in terms of resin operating capacity, PC adsorption yield, PC mass fraction in the sorbed product and specific antioxidant activity of the final product. Six consecutive adsorption / desorption cycles, operated with the same resin load, resulted in stable process performances. The LCA indicated that the environmental impact of the process could be markedly decreased through the addition of an anaerobic digestion step for the production of irrigation-quality water and fertilizers from the dephenolized OMW. The PC market price required for the generation of a positive business case resulted reasonable. The results indicate that the proposed PC adsorption/desorption technology, if integrated with an anaerobic digestion step, represents a promising solution for the treatment and valorisation of OMW, a major agro-industrial waste in Mediterranean countries. This dataset contains the data underlying the following publication: Continuous flow adsorption of phenolic compounds from olive mill wastewater with resin XAD16N: process optimization, life cycle assessment and cost-benefit analysis

    The Foundation of Bologna

    Get PDF
In this work the ancient peoples that partecipated to the foundation of Bologna are studied. In particular, the Etruscans are considered as a confederation of tribes belonging to two distinct lineages descending from Proto-Altaic and Proto-Indo-European peoples. In Bologna territory the members of these lineages were identified as Rasna and Velsna, or, in the dialect of the latter, Ravona and Volvona. Before Etruscans, the territory around Bologna was inhabitated by Proto-Scythians and Proto-Umbrians. The role of all these peoples in the Bologna foundation is then investigated and referred to the archaeological finds discovered in the area

Nō Theater and Cultural Diplomacy. With a Glimpse into Philippine Practices.

AbstractJapan’s post-war cultural diplomacy has focused on improving its image in the world and on recovering prestige. In this effort, Nō Theatre has played an important role in cultural exchanges with other countries. Nō aesthetics and philosophy have come to influence playwrights and directors from the East and West. Newly-created Nō plays (called Shinsaku) written by contemporary Japanese and foreign playwrights, have enriched the centuries-old repertoire with the use of traditional themes and of characters derived from historical and literary figures from different parts of the globe. The year 2013 marked 40 years of Japan-ASEAN (Association of South-East Asian Nations) Friendship and Cooperation. Four years later, in 1977, shortly after the First Japan-ASEAN Summit Meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Japanese Prime Minister Fukuda Takeo announced during a Manila visit the “Fukuda Doctrine” — also known as “heart-to-heart” diplomacy — which spelled out Japan’s diplomatic principles in its engagement with the ASEAN. It is in the spirit of the Fukuda Doctrine that an international conference, that included performances, was convened for August 2013 to celebrate 40 years of Japan-ASEAN Friendship and Cooperation (although inclement weather forced a rescheduling to February 2014). The conference focused on global cultural exchanges by examining the development of Japan’s Nō in Japan, and the performance of Western traditions by individual Filipino artists. The conference, that brought together experts from various disciplines, descendants of Meiji Restoration-era grand masters of Nō theatre, scholars of Japanese culture, diplomats, and a cultural writer to talk about global exchanges and the role of Nō Theatre in cultural diplomacy, became now an original and current book. The book, from a plural point of view, also discusses the practice of adapting Western theatrical performances in the Philippines and its role in cultural diplomacy.

Prefazione. Sulla natura e la poesia

    Get PDF

The Significance of Ethnography in Youth Participation Research: Active Citizenship in the UK after the Brexit Vote

    Get PDF
In comparison to questionnaires, statistical analyses, interviews and experiments, ethnography tends to be a neglected method in youth participation research and in understanding political socialization and citizen action. This, we suggest, is very unfortunate. Where the concerns and experiences of researchers do not match those of young people, it is usually the young people’s perspectives which remain outside the frameworks and conclusions. Drawing on original data and insights from two ethnographies of youth active citizenship initiatives in the UK – My Life My Say and Momentum – collected during a politically tumultuous 8-month period in 2017, this article argues that ethnography has several advantages over other methods when it comes to understanding the depth and significance of youth civic participation and its links to peer groups and emotions. We contend that critical and reflexive ethnographies allow scholars and researchers to ask and probe young people’s perceptions, opinions, actions and behaviours through the use of open-ended questions in settings where civic action is already taking place, thus triangulating findings in natural settings and building a sense of how communities of practice and activism function. In terms of ethics, voice and power, this ethnographic research approach gives young people more control over their own narratives about participation and affiliation in specific political or civic settings than surveys tend to do
