The Persistence-Resilience Trade-off in Unemployment: The Role of Labor and Product Market Institutions
The “great recession” has affected labor markets in Euro-area countries in very different ways. This chapter documents two important aspects of their response: the impact effect of the recession on the rate of unemployment, and the persistence of high unemployment. We find that countries lie on a trade-off between “resilience” and “persistence”: countries where the rate of unemployment is less affected on impact by output shocks (resilience) typically show higher unemployment persistence. We investigate the role of labor and product market institutions, and find evidence that more protected markets are associated to more resilience at the expense of more persistence. This suggests that implementing front loaded “structural reforms” at times of a fiscal consolidation, as many Southern European countries did during the recent crisis, may foster the rise in unemployment and possibly undermine the political support for the reforms. When we estimate the contribution of product and labor market reforms to the rise of unemployment in Southern Europe, however, we find positive, but relatively small effects that are quickly reversed
Calcium phosphate coatings for marble conservation: influence of ethanol and isopropanol addition to the precipitation medium on the coating microstructure and performance
The effect of adding ethanol and isopropanol to aqueous solutions of diammonium hydrogen phosphate, used to create a passivating layer of calcium phosphates over marble, was investigated. Thanks to its weakening effect on the hydration sphere of ions in solution, ethanol allowed complete coverage of marble surface by a crack-free and pore-free layer of octacalcium phosphate. Even better results were obtained using isopropanol, because it has lower adsorption affinity to calcite than ethanol. Treatments involving alcohols provided good acid protection and also restored cohesion among calcite grains in weathered marble
Youth Participation in Psychological Literature: Corpus of Scholarly Publications from the PsycInfo Database
The dataset contains a textual corpus of references in psychological academic literature concerning youth participation, engagement and active citizenship. The references were retrieved from the electronic database PsycINFO, which is one of the most important bibliographic sources for international literature in psychology. The research was carried out on 30 August 2016, using each of the following terms: “active citizenship”, “civic engagement” or “political engagement”, “civic participation” or “political participation”, “activism”. The key terms that were used were chosen by the authors as most relevant in youth participation literature that treats particularly the public civic and political sphere. These were required to appear together with words denoting young people: “youth*” or “young*”, “teen*” or “adolescen*” and delimited to titles, abstracts, keywords or subjects. The analyzed literature consists of 1777 selected entries published between 1990 and mid-2016.
The dataset includes the following information: specific identifying information about the text itself (type/year/title/author/journal or book title/author affiliation); as well as information on the search terms used to retrieve the publication; and finally, the abstract/summary retrieved from the PsycInfo database.
The corpus was used in specific lexicometric content analysis and the dataset allows its replication or further textual analyses
A novel TaqMan®assay for Nosema ceranae quantification in honey bee, based on the protein coding gene Hsp70
Nosema ceranae is now a widespread honey bee pathogen with high incidence in apiculture. Rapid and reliable detection and quantification methods are a matter of concern for research community, nowadays mainly relying on the use of biomolecular techniques such as PCR, RT-PCR or HRMA. The aim of this technical paper is to provide a new qPCR assay, based on the highly-conserved protein coding gene Hsp70, to detect and quantify the microsporidian Nosema ceranae affecting the western honey bee Apis mellifera. The validation steps to assess efficiency, sensitivity, specificity and robustness of the assay are described also
PERCEIVE project - Deliverable D6.1 "Report on causal qualitative model"
The scope of the Deliverable 6.1 is to introduce the causal qualitative model developed in the context
of the PERCEIVE project, as a part of the Working Package 6. The report begins with a short introduction
that highlights the necessity of developing a model for simulating: (i) the manner in which the European
Cohesion Policy funds are distributed among the regions under study and the factors that affect the related
absorption, along with the (ii) the diverse streams of communication of the European Cohesion Policy
projects and outcomes that influence the citizens awareness. The analysis of the system is focused on the
EU structural funds, namely the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the European Social
Fund (ESF) during the two previous programming periods (i.e. 2000-2006, 2007-2013). In fact, the multilevel
nature of the system (i.e. EU, regions, beneficiaries), the dynamic behaviour over the programming
periods, as well as the complexity reflected through the multiple intertwined feedback loops render the
System Dynamics methodology as the appropriate approach to map and model the system under study.
Thus, we briefly present the basic elements and procedures of System Dynamics technique
PERCEIVE project - Deliverable D5.4 "Report of the comparative analysis of the correlation between topics emergent from regional discourses on the one hand, and the awareness and perceptions of the EU (from Eurobarometer) on the other hand"
The report at hand focuses on the statistical test of an eventual relationship between media representation of EU regional cohesion policy, among other explanatory variables, and individuals’ level of European identification as well as their different definitions of being European.
At present time, it is largely acknowledged that individuals do not possess an innate sense of being European, rather, the meaning of such status is socially constructed. Accordingly, extant research has explored the role of the media in shaping the opinions of the general public. However, only recently has research started focusing on the potential role of cohesion policy in shaping EU identity and many aspects of this phenomenon are still unexplored.
We claim that by extending knowledge in this still unfolding area our work contributes to the wider debate on European identity in several ways:
a) by performing a media analysis in seven different countries we offer one of the first international evidences as most of the media analyses are conducted in individual national contexts;
b) our study is based on a large ad-hoc designed survey which allows us to capture so far largely overlooked aspects of EU identity such as the multiplicity and synchronicity of levels – i.e. individual, regional and national – in a way that Eurobarometer-based research could not do so far;
c) our survey also allowed us to explore in unprecedented depth the factors associated with different definitions of being European;
d) we analyse media in a bottom-up way, that is, without using pre-coded frames of valence characterising most of extant research;
e) along with standard interpretive techniques, we use formal methods for representing national media spaces such as topic modelling and sentiment analysis. We believe that this mixed method approach makes our study more replicable than purely qualitative ones, still, nuances and complexities of extracting meaning from text are better preserved than purely quantitative studies
Thinking the Theatre – New Theatrology and Performance Studies

[Eliot, the City and the State: The Waste Land and Coriolan. Fragments and inter-textual verses] These pages explain that Eliot, in some poems and plays, is an illuminated conservator: contra (1) the City and the State founded on the economy of the middle class, i.e. of the employers in the Banks; (2) the hollow bureaucracy of the hollow men; (3) the governance of an only man; (4) the presence in the City and in the State of an eternal undecided governor; (5) the laws of the daily life, if don’t recognize the supremacy of the cosmological laws. Eliot, in this way, is alive again
Un caso di diritto e letteratura. “La ragazza nella nebbia”, ovvero i paradossi della giustizia tra diritto di cronaca e gogna mediatica
[A case of Law and Literature. “La ragazza nella nebbia”, or paradoxes of justice between news right and media pillory] The article starts from the reflection on the relationship between constitutional law and culture. The contents of the media always offer greater interest to the lawyer. The novel “La ragazza nella nebbia” di Donato Carrisi, from which was taken also a film, it is an interesting case in which the literature shows the contradictions of the investigative system. A reckless cop uses the media to create the monster, he does not use DNA or scientific evidence but the help of journalists. But this system that does not respect the rights of the alleged perpetrator has many drawbacks. A horrendous crime in a small community highlights the paradoxes of justice done in the media
