    Inequality and Democracy

The paper is about the political consequences of increasing economic inequality in Western economies. Political theorists have often stressed that democracy is in troubles when its population is not broadly uniform in income and wealth because unequal economic resources can easily translate into a surplus of political resources in the hands of the few. The connections between economic inequality and democracy, however, are not easy to detect and the body of literature is not so large to provide robust assessments of their complex relationship. The aim of this paper is to review the links between the two and to offer some hints on the political relevance of the inequality consequences, if any, on democracy

What goes around, comes around: Reciprocal effects and double-sided moral hazard in the choice of brand licensing

Extending a brand beyond its original product category is a major strategy for long-term profitability. A brand owner can internalize the development of the extension product, or license the brand to an external partner in order to exploit the licensee’s better capabilities and higher efficiency on the targeted market. Brand extension is characterized by the presence of the socalled reciprocal effect, whereby the effort exerted to develop and market the extension has a feedback effect – either positive or negative – on the value of the parent brand. Under licensing, this effect is an externality from the standpoint of the brand owner. The licensing relationship is characterized by double-sided moral hazard, requiring an incentivizing contract; the reciprocal effect adds a further element that should be governed by the contract. Indeed, a positive effect can boost the attractiveness of licensing relative to internal development, whereas a negative one can have the opposite effect. Drawing from extant literature, we build a game-theoretical model and show how reciprocal effect, (dis)similarity between the extension product and the parent brand, and (in)efficiency of the brand owner relative to the licensee in developing the extension shape the optimal licensing contract and affect the choice between internal development and licensing

La struttura processuale nell’opera di Wagner

[Wagner and the Trial] In Wagner, three different trial forms are present if we look at the Valkyrie and Lohengrin. There is a trial by the inquisition, which provides a kind of justice affected by authoritarianism and partiality. But there is also the accusatorial model, which, despite the respect for the adversarial principle, is ineffectual, because it lacks an authority able to decide. The kind of justice given by a father is the only one able to reach the world of values and principles: punishment and education are the same because the son is provided with what is necessary to go on living

    Get PDF
This deliverable outlines the dissemination and communication tools and activities implemented over the three-year period since that start of MADFORWATER aimed to communicate project activities and results to stakeholders and the wider audience. This revised and updated Dissemination and Communication Plan includes the initiatives related to project duration and is also to be considered as a guide to support the consortium to carry out the dissemination activities using the right material and channels. The document also looks at the dissemination and communication materials realized and those still to be achieved, including: project website and social media, press releases, project leaflet, videos, newsletters, presentations, journal articles, attendance at (non)academic events, stakeholder consultation workshops and interaction with other projects and forums. Furthermore, an evaluation of performance against the Key Performance Indicators (as set in the Grant Agreement) is added

PERCEIVE project - Deliverable D7.5 “Policy Brief (1): Guidelines on Cohesion Policies Implementation”

Since its introduction, Cohesion Policy has been the primary tool for the reduction of economic, social and territorial disparities across regions of Europe and the key redistributive mechanism in support to the less developed areas. Despite the statistical indicators register a trend towards European convergence, disparities of many different kinds between regions remain wide (European Commission, 2014) and the EU enlargement reinforced the regional territorial imbalances (Bartkowska and Riedl, 2012). The effects of the Cohesion Policy on the convergence processes have been thoroughly investigated (Islam, 2003; Farole et al., 2011) and policy evaluations hold mixed results about the magnitude of its impact with great heterogeneity depending on the country – or the regions – of implementation (Rodríguez-Pose and Fratesi, 2004; Cuadrado-Roura, 2010). Notably, there is increasing agreement on the fact that domestic factors profoundly influence the way the Cohesion Policy is shaped and the effectiveness and impact of its funding. Weaknesses in terms of social and economic development, territorial capital, political stability, quality of institutions and government, administrative capacity, and national legislative framework might have limited the effectiveness of the Cohesion Policy (Surubaru, 2017; Milio, 2007, 2014; Rodríguez-Pose & Garcilazo, 2015; Fratesi and Perucca, 2018). The Cohesion Policy represented one-third of the EU budget for the 2007-2013 programming period and its delivery system implies an architectural design that is multilevel in nature. Multilevel governance has been a central cornerstone of the European regional policy since the 1990s and, despite the lack of agreement on a common definition, the concept is generally understood as «the participation of a range of different types of actors (public, private and societal) in policy-making and implementation through formal and informal means» (European Parliament, 2014). In this framework, the regional and local authorities have been recognised a growing role in planning and implementing the policy, thus favouring a citizens’ perception of Europe that is local-driven. In other words, when individuals think of Europe, they usually do it from a local point of view and they are influenced by the direct observation of Cohesion projects in their territories (PERCEIVE, Deliverable 2.2). That is to say, the European integration outcomes also increasingly depend on how national, regional and local governments manage and implement the policies. Therefore, a rich strain of literature has recently started to investigate whether the intensity and the efficient implementation of the Cohesion Policy can contribute to improve citizens’ support and stimulate positive attitudes towards the EU (Dellmut and Chalmers, 2018). Although the extant literature is not conclusive, and any causal implication should be avoided, the empirical evidence seems to point toward some significant positive relation characterized by a “learning effect” (Dall’Erba and Fang, 2017). Nevertheless, the effect may vary conditional on specific regional characteristics, the amount of EU funds allocated and the distribution of the socio-economic groups. All in all, we believe that the efficient use of the Structural Funds allocated to a region can indeed favour a more positive perception of the EU both directly and through its positive effect on economic growth. Overall, this framework suggests the adoption of a European strategic approach to regional development which builds upon the differentiated territorial characteristics in a multidimensional perspective. In the end, the strategic approach should translate in a tailored policy-mix based on integrated programmes – in terms of funds, objectives and governance level – to help maintain the sustainability of the policy action through long-term development

The DMP is a document that provides details regarding all the research data collected and generated within a project. In particular, it explains the way research data are handled, organized, licensed and made openly available to the public, and how they will be preserved after the project is completed. The DMP also provides motivations when versions or parts of the project research data cannot be openly shared on account of third-party copyright issues, confidentiality or personal data protection requirements, or when open dissemination could jeopardize the project achievements. The details and the final number of the project data sets may vary during the course of research. For this reason it is fundamental to keep the DMP constantly updated. This DMP reflects the state of the art at the end of PERCEIVE project, showing the variations occurred since the release of PERCEIVE Mid-Term DMP at M13. Modifications to the previous document are directly inserted in the following text, marked in blue character

Electrical properties of nanostructured polypropylene: a matter of morphology?

    Get PDF
This work investigates an alternative view on the mechanisms behind the modification of electrical properties in a filled dielectric, based on the variation of morphological properties of materials. The case of a nanostructured polypropylene-based blend will be analysed, highlighting the morphological changes observed in the bulk of the material with modifications of electrical properties such as space charge accumulation, dielectric strength and conductivity. Results show that nanofillers help inducing an enhanced morphology of the bulk material, with a reduction of phase separation. This in turn results in better breakdown voltage and lower conductivity, but also an increase in space charge accumulation characteristics to unacceptable levels. On the other hand, functionalization of nanoparticles has been proven to be able to reduce charge accumulation to levels lower than the neat base material, despite a similar polymeric morphology. This must be due to the improved filler dispersion observed, clearly showing the added value carried by nanostructuring

This data set contains the underlying data of the scientific publication: Valli, E.; Panni, F.; Casadei, E.; Barbieri, S.; Cevoli, C.; Bendini, A.; García-González, D.L.; Gallina Toschi, T. An HS-GC-IMS Method for the Quality Classification of Virgin Olive Oils as Screening Support for the Panel Test. Foods 2020, 9(5), 657; https://doi.org/10.3390/foods9050657. Sensory analysis, carried out by Panel test, is essential for the quality classification of virgin olive oils (VOOs). The presence and perceived intensity of fruity attribute and sensory defects are linked with the occurrence of specific volatile compounds. Instrumental screening methods based on analysis of volatiles can support the Panel test through fast pre-classification of samples with a known probability, thus increasing the efficiency of quality control. A Headspace Gas Chromatography Ion Mobility Spectrometer (HS-GC-IMS) was used to analyze commercial VOOs by a semi-targeted approach. PLS-DA models were built by data matrices composed of 15 selected volatile compounds with which was possible to classify the samples based on quality grades and presence of defects

1583-2010: Quattro secoli e più di lessicografia italo-francese: Repertorio analitico di dizionari bilingue

    Get PDF
