OLEUM project. Revised method for determination of fatty acid ethyl esters in virgin olive oils. Data from in-house validation

    No full text
This data set contains the underlying data of the scientific publication: Palagano R. et al., 2019. Development and in-house validation of a revised method for determination of fatty acid ethyl esters in virgin olive oils. This publication has been submitted to a scientific journal. The content of fatty acid ethyl esters (FAEEs) is one of the quality parameters to define if an olive oil can be classified as extra virgin since these compounds are considered markers for virgin olive oils obtained from poor quality olives, but can be also indirect markers to detect soft deodorization treatment. The official protocol for determination (EU Reg. 61/2011) can be improved in terms of solvents amount and time of analysis. An off-line HPLC-GC-FID method for FAEEs determination was developed, revising both the preparative step and the GC injector required by the official method. After optimization, the method was in-house validated by analyzing several parameters (linearity, LOD, LOQ, robustness, recovery, precision and accuracy). This data set contains the in-house validation results obtained

Keynes Between the Classics and Sraffa: on the Issue of the Numéraire

The paper sketches a coherent history of the choice of the measure standard from Adam Smith’s Wealth of Nations to Sraffa’s Production of Commodities. As neither the Smithian labour commanded unit nor the Ricardian-Marxian labour embodied one provide a general solution to the dilemma concerning the finding of an invariable standard, the author shows the shortcomings of both methods in an analytically rigorous way. Several years later, the largely unacknowledged fourth chapter of the General Theory once again tackles the matter of measuring aggregate values adopting a net approach and introducing an ad hoc unit. Concerned by the inherent difficulties of the operation, Keynes starts from an harsh criticism towards Pigou’s notion of national dividend to end up asking himself a number of questions that makes him partially lean towards the later Sraffian approach as presented in Production of Commodities, though his stance is not fully compliant either with the premises or the aims of Piero Sraffa’s theoretical framework. In the final part, a general solution based on net labour productivity is considered

Critique of the concept of flexibility / Critique de la notion de flexibilité

    Get PDF
This monograph proposes a theoretical and methodological critique of the concept of flexibility. This critique is based on evaluation criteria of the concepts offered by the social sciences research methodology. Through this exercise, the concept of flexibility appears to be derived from the explanatory functionalist framework of variability and change, which is not able to interpret the firm and work transformations as the current literature is emphasizing

    Get PDF

Pope Francis’s Encyclical Laudato Si’ and global environmental sustainability: a theoretical and empirical assessment

    Get PDF
This paper examines the approach suggested by the Pope Francis’s Encyclical Laudato Si’ (i.e., an inter-disciplinary perspective that combines science and ethics), and theoretically and empirically assesses its scientific and ethical statements in terms of their ability to achieve global environmental sustainability. Scientific statements are shown to be empirically infeasible (e.g., personal fulfillment without population reduction), vague, obvious (e.g., climate as a common good, ecological debt of developed countries), and not novel (e.g., markets and environment in the a-growth paradigm, slowdown of production and consumption in the de-growth paradigm, ecosystem values independent of usefulness in the deep-ecology paradigm). Some ethical statements in the Encyclical are theoretically inconsistent with scientific disciplines (e.g., inter-generational solidarity vs. equity, individual organisms vs. whole species), vague, obvious (e.g., universal communion, happiness as limiting needs), or unnecessary (e.g., cruelty undermines human dignity, animals should not suffer or die needlessly), and thus, contribute little to achieving global sustainability; some other ethical statements are useful, but not novel (e.g., they have been proposed by Eastern Orthodoxy, Judaism, or Buddhism), late, or empirically unreliable (e.g., a contemplative lifestyle, the liberation provided by sobriety). In summary, Laudato Si’ is unsuccessful from a scientific perspective, and is inadequate from an ethical perspective

Disease management in diabetes care: when involving GPs improves patient compliance and health outcomes

    Get PDF
Although the study of the association between interventions in primary care and health outcomes continues to produce mixed findings, programs designed to promote the greater compliance of General Practitioners and their diabetic patients with treatment guidelines have been increasingly introduced worldwide, in an attempt to achieve better quality diabetes care through the enhanced standardisation of patient supervision. In this study we use clinical data taken from the Diabetes Register of one Local Health Authority (LHAs) in Italy’s Emilia-Romagna Region for the period 2014-2015. Firstly, we test to see whether the monitoring activities prescribed for diabetics by regional diabetes guidelines, actually have a positive impact on patients’ health outcomes and increase appropriateness in health care utilization. Secondly, we investigate whether GPs’ participation in the local Diabetes Management Program (DMP) leads to improved patient compliance with regional guidelines. Our results show that such a program, which aims to increase GPs’ involvement and cooperation in following regional guidelines for best practices, achieves its goal of improved patient compliance with the prescribed actions. In turn, through the implementation of the DMP and the greater involvement of physicians, regional policies have succeeded in promoting better health outcomes and the improved appropriateness of health care utilization

A corpus-based analysis of the vitality of Sardinian. A comparison with Māori

    Get PDF
Sardinian and Māori are two endangered languages belonging to similar language systems, despite their territorial distance. Both language systems are set on insular settings and shaped by language contact interactions involving local autochthonous languages ‒ Sardinian and Māori ‒ and imported languages ‒ Italian and English respectively. In both cases, language contact conditions have led Italian and English to become majority languages, while Sardinian and Māori have survived as endangered minority languages. This situation has produced new non-standard varieties of the imported majority languages: Regional Italian of Sardinia (RIS) and New Zealand English (NZE). Drawing on corpus-based research on Māori lexical presence in NZE (Macalister 2001; 2006a; 2006b), this study adapts existing methods of analysis to test the vitality of Sardinian, by measuring its influence on RIS. A new corpus, the RIS Corpus, has therefore been created, based on Macalister’s NZE Corpus (2001). A comparison between the lexical presence of Sardinian and Māori in the two corpora shows different representations of the autochthonous cultures in RIS and NZE, in line with UNESCO’s statement on the vitality of the two endangered languages, with Sardinian defined as definitely endangered, and Māori recognised as vulnerable
