#BlackLivesMatter and hashtag activism in a critical discourse analysis perspective
Get PDFThis paper addresses the linguistic strategies used by so-called ‘hashtag activism’, i.e. grassroots activism that pre-eminently takes place on social media. It specifically analyses the discursive features of #BlackLivesMatter, a hashtag and socio-political movement that emerged online in the United States to characterise the strong opposition against what is seen by many as a form of institutionalised racism, as expressed mainly by alleged police brutality. Given that the protest provoked strong counter-reactions on social-media, also the hashtags #BlueLivesMatter and #AllLivesMatter – whose main objective is to delegitimize #BlackLivesMatter’s cause – are examined. The main premise of this research is that activist hashtags on Twitter work as ideological weapons serving the purposes of affiliation and group inclusion as well as polarization, exacerbating a ‘we versus them’ division, but, at the same time, encouraging the circulation of resistant or ‘counter-hegemonic’ discourses. The paper adopts a critical approach to the analysis of specific categories of language (such as agency, transitivity, lexical items, implications and presuppositions...) in a corpus of Twitter microposts, marked by the above-mentioned hashtags and retrieved from September to November 2018. The Appraisal Framework (Martin and White 2005) is also applied, as suggested in studies by Zappavigna (2012, 2018). The result is an exploration of how specific socio-political discourses are structured, contested and resisted in the context of social media and through the use of tags that are increasingly assuming a vital interpersonal function
Romandini et al. CODES and DATA for Macromammal and bird assemblages across the Late Middle to Upper Palaeolithic transition in Italy: an extended zooarchaeological review
No full textEvidence of human activities during the Middle to Upper Palaeolithic transition is well represented from rock-shelters, caves and open-air sites across Italy. Over the past decade, both the revision of taphonomic processes affecting archaeological faunal assemblages and new zooarchaeological studies have allowed archaeologists to better understand subsistence strategies and cultural behaviors attributed to groups of Neandertal and modern humans living in the region.
This work presents the preliminary results of a 5-year research programme (ERC n. 724046 – SUCCESS) and offers a state-of-the-art synthesis of archaeological faunal assemblages including mammals and birds uncovered in Italy between 50 and 35 ky ago. The present data were recovered in primary Late Mousterian, Uluzzian, and Protoaurignacian stratigraphic contexts from Northern Italy (Grotta di Fumane, Riparo del Broion, Grotta Maggiore di San Bernardino, Grotta del Rio Secco, Riparo Bombrini), and Southern Italy (Grotta di Castelcivita, Grotta della Cala, Grotta del Cavallo, and Riparo l'Oscurusciuto). The available Number of Identified Specimens (NISP) is analysed through intra- and inter-site comparisons at a regional scale, while aoristic analysis is applied to the sequence documented at Grotta di Fumane. Results of qualitative comparisons suggest an increase in the number of hunted taxa since the end of the Middle Palaeolithic, and a marked change in ecological settings beginning with the Protoaurignacian, with a shift to lower temperatures and humidity. The distribution of carnivore remains and taphonomic analyses hint at a possible change in faunal exploitation and butchering processing between the Middle and Upper Palaeolithic. A preliminary comparison between bone frequencies and the distribution of burned bones poses interesting questions concerning the management of fire. Eventually, the combined use of relative taxonomic abundance and aoristic analysis explicitly addresses time averaging and temporal uncertainty embedded in NISP counts and offers estimates of absolute change over time that can be used to support hypotheses emerging from taxon relative frequencies

Comunità imperfette: dalle dinamiche disgregative al decision making comunitario
Get PDFIl presente volume raccoglie i lavori presentati durante il XII congresso di SIPCO, “Le comunità Imperfette”, tenutosi a Palermo dal 7 al 9 giugno. I lavori che compongono questo volume raccontano la vita delle comunità e come la psicologia di comunità possa favorire la costruzione del bene comune e una qualità di vita degna di essere vissuta.
Agli stimolanti e densi contributi di Gioacchino Lavanco e di Piero Amerio, seguono le ricche sessioni dedicate alla cittadinanza, l’engagement e l’apprendimento attivo, al disagio e alla marginalità, alla promozione della salute, alle minoranze e all’integrazione sociale, ai metodi e agli strumenti per la ricerca e l’intervento e, infine, un focus su famiglia, servizi e comunità.

Get PDFGli ambienti di lavoro sono ancora oggi caratterizzati da un notevole gap di genere, che può essere orizzontale o verticale: orizzontale, quando un genere si concentra prevalentemente su certe aree o professioni (“le maestre” contrapposte agli ingegneri, ad esempio), verticale, quando un genere è sovrarappresentato al fondo della carriera e sottorappresentato ai vertici della stessa, come capita normalmente alle donne praticamente in tutti gli ambiti lavorativi. L’Università di Bologna non sfugge a questo stato di fatto, come del resto tutte le altre Università, ivi comprese, seppure in misura diversa a seconda dei casi, le Università straniere. La polarizzazione riguarda tutti gli ambiti in cui si articola la comunità universitaria: l’ambito studentesco, del personale tecnico amministrativo e docente. Le studentesse occupano in misura pressoché esclusiva l’area degli studi umanistici, gli studenti quella degli studi scientifici; i tecnici amministrativi sono prevalentemente donne, ma i dirigenti no; se i dottorandi sono più o meno equamente ripartiti, i docenti di prima fascia sono quasi esclusivamente maschi. Di più: dopo un periodo di relativo aggiustamento, ancorché molto lento, la forbice sembra tornare a riaprirsi, come i dati più recenti tendono a segnalare
