Gendered decision making in explore-exploit tasks

Many real-world scenarios involve explore-exploit decisions, balancing the pursuit of better opportunities with securing a certain but potentially suboptimal outcome. Do gendered approaches to these decisions exist? This study investigates gender differences in exploration and competition behaviour through a pre-registered lab experiment with 432 participants (50% female). Specifically, we examine behaviour in the context of the explore-exploit dilemma, both under a piece rate payment scheme and in a competitive tournament setting. Participants completed three computerized tasks: the grain game featuring the explore-exploit dilemma, which included two treatments, one allowing only gains and another incorporating both gains and losses, a risk elicitation task (BRET), and a loss aversion task. These tasks were followed by a questionnaire designed to assess various individual characteristics The results show that, contrary to the initial pre-registered hypotheses, women do not explore less than men; in fact, they explore more in environments where only gains are possible. However, no gender differences emerge in exploration when the environment entails the possibility of losses. Regarding competition, women are less likely to choose competitive settings than men in gain-only environments, but this difference disappears once individual characteristics, such as risk and loss aversion, are taken into account. These findings contribute to understanding gendered tendencies in risk-taking, exploration, and competition

Political power, conflict and backlash: theory and evidence from Italy

While democratization and enfranchisement are known to benefit minority groups in the long run, sudden increases in political representation can disrupt existing power balances, provoke resistance, and lead to worse policy outcomes in the short run. We document and explain this pattern. In our theoretical model, conflict and backlash are triggered by a sufficient increase in political power if preferences are sufficiently different. We exploit the introduction of an affirmative action measure in Italian local elections, which led to an exogenous increase in female political representation in small municipalities. Using a Difference in Discontinuity design, we document that, in line with the theory, moderate increases in female representation led to higher day care spending, while large increases resulted in lower spending on this gender-sensitive issue. Higher council dissolution rates and null effects on non-gender-related policy areas support the interpretation of the evidence suggested by the theory. Several robustness checks and evidence from Spanish data also support the internal and external validity of our findings

    Cittadinanza d’impresa. Una proposta per l’analisi e l’intervento

Beneficial corporate citizenship processes can only be developed through careful consideration rooted in philosophy and methodological consistency. Unfortunately, the concept of corporate citizenship is often used without clarifying the analytical tools needed to study and intervene in it. This brief contribution aims to serve as a concrete methodological guideline, presenting a framework based on three dimensions: the general characteristics of citizenship, the economic-managerial dimension of citizenship (associated with the E-S-G sustainability orientation), and the level of analysis (the epistemological orientation) adopted for studying and intervening in the phenomenon

Sensory analysis of dealcoholized wines produced using vacuum distillation

    No full text
The dataset contains the results of a study on sensory evaluation of partially and fully dealcoholized wines. Specifically, in this study, partially (PDW) and fully dealcoholized (DW) white, rosé, and red wines were produced using vacuum distillation (VD), analysing ethanol removal impacts on sensory attributes through consumer response. Sensory evaluation highlighted reductions in fresh floral (white/ rosé), fresh fruity (red), sweetness (white/ rosé), hotness, and body/fullness (rosé), while color intensity (red), cooked vegetable notes, and acidity (white/ rosé) increased after ethanol removal. PDW and DW white/red wines retained original overall acceptability scores, whereas rosé acceptability decreased

The 1st INFOGUT Annual Meeting, held from May 26–28, 2025, at the Department of Agricultural and Food Sciences, University of Bologna, marked a significant milestone for COST Action CA23110. The event brought together leading experts and early-career researchers from across Europe to present the first outcomes of collaborative efforts focused on in vitro models of the gut microbiota in both humans and animals, under healthy and diseased conditions. The meeting featured over a dozen oral presentations and more than 20 posters, structured around five Working Groups (WGs). WG1 addressed the harmonization of in vitro colon models; WG2 explored extensions to other gut compartments and host interactions; WG3 focused on disease-specific models; WG4 emphasized data science, bioinformatics, and multi-omics integration; and WG5 tackled regulatory frameworks, education, and technology transfer. Topics ranged from advanced bioreactor systems and microbial dynamics to the gut-brain axis, xenobiotic interactions, and the development of standardized protocols. The meeting fostered interdisciplinary dialogue, highlighted innovative methodologies, and laid the groundwork for future collaborative research. It underscored the importance of harmonized approaches in gut microbiota modeling to enhance translational potential and regulatory acceptance of microbiome-based interventions

ECLIPSE. WP2 Task 2.2. Development of transducer phages conjugated with ECL-active systems

    No full text
The present dataset continues a previously deposited dataset (https://doi.org/10.6092/unibo/amsacta/8318) as part of the ECLipse project, focusing on the electrochemiluminescence (ECL) behavior of magnetic microbeads functionalized with a stimuli-responsive derivative of [Ru(bpy)3]2+. The Phages used as a detection bio-molecule, can carry a really high amount of luminophores, hence it can be obtained an higher signal compared with the antibodies, which is the most used detection bio-molecule

A different way. A tribute to Bruno Maggi. Essays on social action and organization

In this ebook, six scholars from diverse disciplines - organization studies, sociology, and medicine - reflect on the influence of Bruno Maggi’s work on their research and theoretical development and production. The specific topics include organizational change in enterprises and in work, and its relationship with technology, negotiation, learning, legal regulation, and health. These themes recall Maggi’s scientific career and pay tribute to his original contribution to the interpretation of social action: the Theory of Organizational Action. Through his theoretical reflection, research, and teaching, Maggi has shown that, in line with what the epistemology of the human and social sciences has clearly indicated, it is possible to pursue a pathway that is distinct from the usual and opposing views of objectivism and subjectivism

Nomos e narrazione di fondazione in Signori della Rugiada, di Jacques Roumain

[Nomos and Foundational Narrative in Masters of the Dew by Jacques Roumain] Masters of the Dew, by Jacques Roumain, emerges as a foundational narrative that links literature, normativity, and Haiti’s national formation. Working through an interdisciplinary lens, the article shows how the novel reshapes symbols and social practices within a normative register. It argues that Roumain constructs an alternative nomos to that of the state through recurring images of dew, cooperative rituals such as coumbite, communal solidarity, and instituting sacrifices. The qualitative analysis highlights three axes: literature as a generator of norms within fragile institutions; dew as an aesthetic-legal category that articulates the common; and the ambivalence of myths, capable of sustaining solidarity or legitimizing exclusion. Ultimately, the narrative suggests a symbolic refounding of the Haitian nation and offers insights for debates on commons-based constitutionalism and postcolonial political imagination

Name und Identität(en): Namenwahl deutscher MigrantInnen in Dänemark im 19.–20. Jahrhundert

Beyond identifying individuals, personal names indicate social categories and flag someone as belonging to a certain ethnic group. In turn, names may serve as an important means for (re)constructing identities and for positioning within sociolinguistic spaces. This article focuses on assimilation vs. ethnic maintenance in terms of name choices among German descendants in Denmark in the 19th/20th c., a period of transition from a multicultural and multilingual German-Danish speaking society to the Danish nation-state. The study reveals gender-specific differences in ethnic boundary marking and the impact of the socio-political context, in particular the German-Danish war of 1864 and the Second World Wa
