Solving the Milk Addiction Paradox
The milk addiction paradox refers to an empirical finding in which commodities that are typically considered to be non addictive, such as milk, appear instead to be addictive. This result seems more likely when there is persistence in consumption and when using aggregate data, and it suggests that the AR(2) model typically used in the addiction literature is prone to produce spurious result in favor of rational addiction. Using both simulated and real data, we show that the milk addiction paradox disappears when estimating the data using an AR(1) linear specification that describes the saddle-path solution of the rational addiction model. The AR(1) specification is able to correctly discriminate between rational addiction and simple persistence in the data, to test for the main features of rational addiction, and to produce unbiased estimates of the short and long-run elasticity of demand. These results hold both with individual and aggregated data, and they suggest that, for testing rational addiction, the AR(1) model is a better empirical alternative than the canonical AR(2) model

CLUB Working Papers in Linguistics Volume 4
Access and Labour Market Outcomes of Internships During Higher Education in Italy and the United Kingdom
This paper explores the accessibility to internships and undertaken during higher education in Italy and the UK, and how these internships affect graduates’ transitions to work in the UK and Italy, countries in which the incidence of internships during HE study used to be lower compared to other European countries, but has increased over time. Results show that internships both in the UK and Italy have a positive effect on being employed after graduation, and in the UK they also have a positive effect on wages. Comparing graduates’ early career outcomes in two different institutional contexts also highlights the importance of having a clear definition of internships to distinguish them from other types of work experience within and beyond national and institutional boundaries
Within-between decomposition of the Gini index: a novel proposal
The socioeconomic impact of spatial concentration has been receiving an increasing attention during the last two decades. Consequently, the necessity of effective measures of this phenomenon has increased too. This paper considers a population partitioned by subgroups and develops a decomposition of the Gini index in two components, which measure the within and the between group inequality and are also particularly effective to quantify spatial concentration. Indeed, they possess a crucial property which overcomes important issues that may arise using any Gini index decomposition in the spatial context, following a recent approach. In addition, the availability of an only-two highly informative components decomposition provides in numerous applications and several frameworks further significant advantages in the determination of the contributions to global inequality of the intra and the inter groups differences. The ability of the components to capture these phenomena is supported by a parametric bootstrap procedure. This highlights extremely high correlations between the components and two axiomatically derived benchmarks. The presentation of a case study concerning the income distribution in the Italian provinces concludes the works, the informativeness and the interpretative advantages of the proposed decomposition appear evidently
