Weaving Sustainability, Carving Identity: An Exploration of Artisan Livelihood in Oaxaca, Mexico
Get PDFThe southwestern region of Mexico is world known for its beautiful folk art that is high in quality and variety, and which derives from ancient indigenous traditions. Weaving and woodcarving are such pre-Hispanic traditions that have taught artesanos to care for the gifts that nature can provide. However amidst a global environmental crisis and a rise in socioeconomic barriers to indigenous community development, artesanos have had to find ways to uplift their families from poverty resulting in the exploitation of primary resources. This ethnographic exploration of two aspects of folk art production in Oaxaca, Mexico uncovers the ways in which artesanos understand the cultural and environmental sustainability surrounding artisan livelihood in a growing globalized neoliberal market. I focused on analyzing how these artisans view themselves and their role in preserving this threatened way of life; this includes finding a market for their craft, balancing tradition and innovation, utilizing traditional community systems of organizing, and maintaining indigenous spiritual values of coexistance with their surrounding environment. Overall, this projects hopes to illuminate how indigenous artisanal practices have developed in relationship to their rural environmental contexts

Engaging Existing and Emergent Experiences: Narratives among Young Filipinas on Guam
Get PDFWhile Filipino people comprise the second-highest percentage of the population on Guam, unfortunately there is not a comparable amount of scholarly publication about the Guam Filipino population, much less on Filipinas specifically. Although there is scholarly interest in this area, there is also concern over the availability of primary texts. Profound questions arise because of this dearth: In what ways are Filipinas on Guam writing about their experiences about life on the island? How can existing narratives be brought into conversation with emergent narratives? This paper responds to the perceived silence by advocating revolution through language, as educators on Guam can guide students to recognize their postcolonial background and foster the production and representation of narratives for students’ identity negotiation and political empowerment.

The Truth in the Falsification of Artificial Intelligence
Get PDFThe influence Karl Popper’s falsificationist model has had on the scientific method and the demarcation problem is troublesome for the field of artificial intelligence (AI). According to Popper, the falsifiability of a hypothesis is a necessary condition for its scientific validity. Because the falsificationist model has been formative in the development of modern philosophy of science, it has become the primary way in which we demarcate the scientific from the non-scientific. However, as a consequence of our current, limited understanding of mental properties—such as intelligence, thought, and personal identity—I argue that it is unclear whether hypotheses concerning the design of artificial intelligence—particularly strong AI—are truly falsifiable. If this is the case, society’s approach to and attitude towards future AI research and development regarding scientific methodology is in need of reevaluation. I conclude that we should either (1) aim to better define the concepts in philosophy of mind that we attribute to artificial intelligence to understand how they can be falsified in order to make quicker and more meaningful progress in AI or (2) recognize that there are aspects of AI that simply cannot be falsified and adapt our current scientific methodology to something more appropriate and inclusive than Popper’s falsificationist principles

Educational Narrative: Amairany Bautista
Get PDFAs a part of the University of Puget Sound\u27s African American Studies Public Scholarship course, students were required to review their educational experiences from pre-k to the present. The goal of this assignment was for them to assess the ways in which they were treated based on their marginalizations or their privileges. Students provided three terms for what their narrative would share — the terms were not to be included in their narrative. After reading their narratives aloud, a class discussion connected their terms to the associated experiences. There are a total of four narratives in this issue, three are also accompanied with a voice recording by the author. The following is one such narrative
