Race and the Greek system in the 21st Century: Centering the voices of Asian American women.
This study examines both the presence and absence of Asian Americans in a
sorority system at a predominantly White institution in the Southeastern U.S.
Using critical race theory to analyze interviews with eighteen Asian American
college women, half of whom belonged to sororities and half who did not, the
study asks the following questions: How do Asian American women both inside
and outside Greek life view sororities? Are sororities a site where race still
matters? How do Asian American women recognize the role of race or downplay
its significance in their perceptions of sororities
Praise for regret: people value regret above other negative emotions
What do people think about the emotion of regret? Recent demonstrations of the psychological
benefits of regret have been framed against an assumption that most people find regret to be
aversive, both when experienced but also when recalled later. Two studies explored lay
evaluations of regret experiences, revealing them to be largely favorable rather than unfavorable.
Study 1 demonstrated that regret, but not other negative emotions, was dominated by positive
more than negative evaluations. In both Studies 1 and 2, although participants saw a great deal of
benefit from their negative emotions, regret stood out as particularly beneficial. Indeed, in Study
2, regret was seen to be the most beneficial of 12 negative emotions on all five functions of:
making sense of past experiences, facilitating approach behaviors, facilitating avoidance
behaviors, gaining insights into the self, and in preserving social harmony. Moreover, in Study 2,
individuals made self-serving ascriptions of regret, reporting greater regret experiences for
themselves than for others. In short, people value their regrets substantially more than they do
other negative emotions

Experiments on the Efficiency of Cluster Searches
The efficiency of various cluster based retrieval (CBR) strategies is analyzed. The possibility of combining CBR and inverted index search (11s) is investigated. A method for combining the two approaches is proposed and shown to be cost effective in terms of paging and CPU time. The observations prove that the new method is much more efficient than conventional approaches. In the experiments, the effect of the number of selected clusters, centroid length, page size, and
matching function is considered. The experiments show that the storage overhead of the new method would be moderately higher than that of IIS. The paper also examines the question: Is it
beneficial to combine CBR and full search in terms of effectiveness
Structuring Hypertext Databases Using Hyper-Plate
Hypertext is the non-sequential access of information. The hypertext structure is powerful enough to represent informal, semiformal, and formal data. The construction of a hypertext document is a complex and laborious task. In general, hypertext documents are constructed manually. The manualmethod of construction may produce unstructured documents. It has been shown that a poor domerzt structure contributes to the lost in hyperspace syndrome. Hypertext Authoping System WypAS) was developed at the Depmtnaent of Systems Analysis, Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. In this study, Hyper-plate system was developed to structure documents created in HypAS. Hyperplate
system is used to create hyper-plates, i.e., templates for hypertext documents. A hyper-plate defines the atbributes of a collection of nodes and the relationship among those nodes. The hyper-plate concept was conceived to aa'dress the issues of structuring and automating the construction of hypertext documents. The concepts of this study can be extended to any hypertext authoring system. The paper presents the design and

Computer Simulation Results from System Dynamics Model of Agriculture System
This paper discusses the results of simulation from an extensive System Dynamics model of agriculture system. A computer simulation model is written in Dynamo with System
Dynamics techniques to study the complex agriculture system using data from a number of case studies of India. The results
presented in this paper are obtained from the simulation of the
system with different infrastuctral and technological investment
strategies. The results are summerised here which may be used as
a basic plannining guidelines for developing large scale
agriculture particularly in developing countries. These
guidelines may be used to make such a project a successful
venture rather than a waste as has already happened in a number
of cases
Designing a Publish-Substrate for Privacy/Security in Pervasive Environments
The emergence of a multitude of technologies for tracking locations is leading to the design of pervasive location-tracking environments. In order to explore issues in the design of such environments, the University of Michigan is deploying a network of location sensors in a number of buildings. Managing privacy is expected to be a significant concern for acceptance of such pervasive environments. This paper outlines an initial design of a publish-subscribe communication substrate for controlled distribution of sensor data. We describe our prototype as well as a privacy-aware location-tracking application built on top of the system. The focus of this paper is on policy management so as to provide means for allowing users to control distribution of data tagged with their ID to other users and services. The paper shows how a wide variety of policies can be specified in the system and points out directions for future work
"PanaeaMud An Online, Object-oriented Multiple User Interactive Geologic Database Tool"
This paper provides an overview of the design, development, and use of the PangaeaMud Database System. Section I gives an introduction to pertinent concepts and discusses previous work in the area. Section I1 is devoted to the non-technical aspects of the system. A brief user's view of the system is provided, along with discussion of the internal environment utilities.
Section I11 illustrates the workings of the system from the programmer's viewpoint and contains information on the main entity relationships within the database and their implementation
