Counterfactual-seeking: The scenic overlook of the road not taken
Decision-makers faced with an opportunity to learn the outcome of a foregone
alternative must balance anticipated regret, should that information be unfavorable, with
the potential benefits of this information in reducing experienced regret. Counterfactualseeking,
the choice to learn more about foregone alternatives, may be a functional, regretregulating
strategy for individuals already experiencing regret. Counterfactual-seeking
increases in response to dissatisfying outcomes (Studies 1 & 2). Counterfactual-seeking
is generally able to reduce dissatisfaction (Study 2), regardless of whether individuals
personally chose to view this information or were randomly assigned to do so (Study 3).
Moreover, both imaginative (versus factual) thoughts about the foregone option and
upward (versus downward) counterfactual thoughts play a role in this improvement in
satisfaction (Study 4). Regret thus has a complex influence in how individuals engage

This Relationship Isn’t Working … But Hopefully We Can Still Be Friends: How to Choose and Move to a New Vendor
With all of our daily tasks and special projects, assessing a vendor’s performance is probably the
last item on a library’s priority list. But with rapid technology growth and the budgetary
difficulties that libraries have faced in recent years, this overlooked task is becoming more
imperative. Last spring at our institution, it became apparent that we needed to work with a
larger serials subscription agency, and we began researching our options. In this presentation,
we will discuss vendor areas to evaluate including interface, costs and service. We will also
cover the vendor migration’s additional benefits including the improvement of our workflow
and the opportunity it provided for us to evaluate our serials collection in terms of usage,
format, scope and cost
Title VI Survey Results [2009]
This report provides results from a national survey of the 243 Title VI Native American programs. The survey was designed to access the role of Title VI program in offering services and supports to the elders in their communities. The survey was launched in April 2009. Information Literacy Through Site-Specific Installation: The Library Project
This article describes how a collaborative, multifaceted, site-specific installation helped to develop information literacy in studio art students. Through the process of planning, creating, and installing the project, students learned to find and evaluate many different kinds of information, from design ideas to historical precedents, site plans, and business plans. As a public installation within a library, students learned to consider the economic, social, and legal issues involved with the context of their audience and location. Finally, the conceptual framework of the installation encouraged students to think critically about the role of libraries in today’s information and technology-saturated society
Mystery Plots: Motivating Algebraic Model Building with Dynamic Sketches
In this paper, we explore the use of dynamic geometry software (DGS) as a medium for
changing student and teacher interactions (and attitudes) with functions. We o er three
examples of sketches that may be used to encourage students to build their own functions.
Moreover, we share a strategy for developing additional sketches, namely our three-step
MTA process (Measure - Trace - Algebratize). Note that these steps roughly correspond
to concrete, iconic, and symbolic levels of representation proposed by Bruner (1960; 1966).
As our examples illustrate, the MTA approach provides students with opportunities to
explore and construct remarkably non-standard functions - often beautiful, unexpected,
and thoroughly original
Automated Bulk Uploading of Images and Metadata to Flickr
The Digital Initiatives department at Miami University, like most Digital
Initiatives and Special Collections, has a large amount of rich digital image collections,
stored primarily in a third-party database. Typically, these databases aren't findable to
the average web user. It was our desire to expose these collections to the wider web
environment. We immediately thought of Flickr, the most prominent website for image
discovery and sharing. Our problem was scale; the default uploading interface was too
inefficient to push forward with the project. We developed a set of PHP scripts devised
to interact with Flickr's API to allow for quick and efficient uploading of images as well
as metadata such as titles, subjects, tags, and hyperlinks back to our collections. Once the
scripts were in place the uploading process was completely automatic. Miami University
Library’s Digital Initiatives department has uploaded over 5,000 images using this
method and the results have been outstanding. New users are consistently attracted to
the content and in about a year there have been nearly 200,000 views of our images. This
article will discuss Flickr and the importance of contributing library materials to these
types of social media sharing communities; explain the technology and programming
involved in the project, and discuss our results and the outcomes of project
