Integrated Information Literacy Assessment using ePortfolios
ePortfolios continue to gain strength in higher education as a viable and relatively quick method for assessment of student work. Miami University recently implemented Chalk & Wire as its ePortfolio system for the entire campus system of 21,000 undergraduates and 2,000 graduate students. Numerous programs and departments have embraced assessment using ePortfolios. One of the earlier adopters was the Honors Program, with a philosophy that focuses on student development in seven outcome areas (URL). Students create ePortfolios that demonstrate their growth in each outcome during the school year, and these ePortfolios are assessed by program staff and affiliated faculty.
The libraries have partnered with the Honors Program to utilize ePortfolios for the assessment of information literacy skills. Artifacts from three of the seven Honors Program outcomes (communication, inquiry, and critical/integrative thinking) are automatically forwarded to a team of librarians that assess the work using the Information Literacy rubric developed by the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U). These artifacts are the same that are submitted to the honors program, and are tailored for our purposes.
This poster will further explain the project, detail the results from initial assessments, and expand on how the data was used to enhance information literacy concepts in the Honors Program curriculum. Furthermore, the poster will describe future implications for the project, including the feasibility of expanding the program to additional departments
Critical Gameplay: Software Studies in Computer Gameplay
The computer game software with which we interact on a daily basis not only entertains us, it trains us into specific patterns. Critical Gameplay is a design practice which endeavors to expose and redesign the patterns to which standard gameplay subscribes. The ongoing
project seeks to identify the dominant values,
philosophies and problem solving models reinforced by computer games and provides prototypical alternates to those standards
Multi-measure investigation of the divergence of implicit and explicit consumer evaluations
This research extends findings that implicit and explicit attitudes may diverge to a
consumer evaluation task using multiple measures of implicit evaluation: Evaluative
Movement Assessment (EMA; Brendl, Markman, & Messner, 2005), and Evaluative
Priming (Fazio,Jackson, Dunton, & Williams,1995). These measures were significantly
associated with each other for both positive and negative implicit attitudes. Neither
measure predicted explicit liking of the product or explicit intention to purchase the
product. We believe this to be the first such demonstrated divergence in a naturalistic,
unconditioned consumer evaluation context. Implicit activation of the product’s
emotional benefit (e.g., “relaxation”), as assessed in a lexical decision task (LDT) was
not associated with the EMA or evaluative priming, but was significantly associated with
both explicit emotional state (e.g., relaxation) and explicit purchase intention; the latter
effect was not mediated by explicit emotion
Enriching Now with Then: Connecting Nursing Home Residents and Staff Through Oral History
This research presents and discusses findings on how increased staff knowledge of an Ohio nursing homes residents' past improved communication and relations between resident and staff and, also, boosted job performance and/or satisfaction. The findings are based upon interviews with 13 residents and 21 nurses and nurse aides
AAA Caregiving Survey Results
AAA Caregiving Survey Results summarizes the results of a mini survey of the nations 629 Area Agencies on Aging (AAA) on the support they provide to family caregivers. Over 57% of AAAs responded to the survey and the results highlight the characteristics of AAA caregiving programs, services offered, numbers of caregivers enrolled in AAA programs and the training and technical assistance needs of the AAAs
Information literacy assessment: a case study at Miami University
The purpose of this case study, created by a faculty learning community (FLC) on research fluency, is to investigate students’ information literacy practices at Miami University, including information search process, preparation, differences in students’ information literacy skill levels, and how well they transfer these skills outside coursework. Design/methodology/approach – Faculty and librarians designed a survey of about 60 questions, which were given to 300 students in faculty’s classes by librarian FLC members. Findings – FLC members discovered where perceptions among professors, librarians, and students were similar, and where they differed. Practical implications – Influenced by the findings, participating faculty made changes to the course plans and included additional assignments to make the process of research more explicit. Originality/value – While there are similar studies about information literacy, the Miami University study is distinct in that it reports on collaboration with faculty and makes use of their perceptions of students.Post-print of:

Brief chilling to subzero temperature increases cold hardiness in the hatchling painted turtle (Chrysemys picta)
Although many studies of ectothermic vertebrates have documented compensatory changes in cold hardiness associated with changes of season, much less attention has been paid to adjustment of physiological functions and survival limits following more acute exposure to cold. We investigated the ability of hatchling painted turtles (Chrysemys picta) to increase cold hardiness in response to brief exposure to a subzero temperature. Winter‐acclimated turtles were “cold conditioned” by chilling them in the supercooled (unfrozen) state to −7°C over a few days before returning them to 4°C. These turtles fared no better than control animals in resisting freezing when cooled in the presence or absence of ice and exogenous ice nuclei. Survival following tests of freeze tolerance (freezing for about 70 h; minimum body temperature, −3.75°C) was nominally higher in cold‐conditioned turtles than in controls (36% vs. 13%, respectively), although the difference was not statistically significant. Of the survivors, cold‐conditioned turtles apparently recovered sooner. Turtles subjected to cold shock (supercooling to −13°C for 24 h, followed by rewarming to 0°C) were strongly affected by cold conditioning: all controls died, but 50% of cold‐conditioned turtles survived. We investigated potential mechanisms underlying the response to cold conditioning by measuring changes in levels of putative cryoprotectants. Plasma levels of glucose and lactate, but not urea, were higher in cold‐conditioned turtles than in controls, although the combined increase in these solutes was only 23 mmol L−1. Cold conditioning attenuated cold‐shock injury to brain cells, as assessed using a vital‐dye assay, suggesting a link between protection of the nervous system and cold hardiness at the organismal level
Creating, implementing, and sustaining an advanced optical spectroscopy laboratory course
An upper-division laboratory course in atomic and molecular spectroscopy is described. Examples
of outcomes that also benefit second-year physics laboratories and demonstrations in introductory
courses are presented. The overarching goal that drove the development of the course was to assist
students in understanding the fundamental connections between atomic and molecular spectra and
the underlying structures. A selection of laboratory experiences supporting this goal, and the
equipment and techniques necessary to provide them, are outlined
