Evaluating Transit-Oriented Development Effectiveness
No full textAs resources become scare, transportation costs rise, and congestion gets worse, developing transit alternatives will become increasingly important. Transit-oriented development is a sustainable method for building communities that are less dependent on the automobile. Methods for evaluating the potential and effectiveness of a transit-oriented development include determining an area’s vehicle miles traveled, normative characteristics, and a spectrum from transit-adjacent to transit-oriented. The purpose of this paper is to outline a method to evaluate the pedestrian-orientation of transit stations that can augment existing methods of measuring the characteristics of transit-oriented developments. The case study of the transit zone surrounding the Harlem/Lake El Station in Oak Park, Illinois is used to demonstrate the utilization of this method. The study area includes North Marion Street, the Pleasant District and the proposed Chelsea Station developments
Creating and Supporting a Borrowable Collection of Portable Digital Technology
No full textOne University offers a collection of digital equipment, including iPads, laptops, digital cameras, digital audio recorders, microphones, networking cables, projectors and financial/graphing calculators. These items were acquired through a Student Technology Fee process overseen by the University’s IT Services. This application based process provides one-time money for technology resources, particularly those which have the greatest impact to on students. Items which the Libraries have acquired through this fund are available at three of the four main campus libraries for loan periods of between three hours and one day. This session will discuss the scope of the collection, usage patterns, technical support needed to maintain the collection, and proposed changes to the size of the collection and the rules governing its use. Participants in this discussion should gain a sense of the budgetary and human resources needed to maintain a working collection of digital items for loan, challenges to maintaining and growing the collection, and ideas for developing a collection that meets the needs of their primary users

Seeing the Forest by Counting the Trees [slide deck]
No full textLibraries, particularly academic libraries, are swimming in a sea of data. Librarians often contribute to this by counting every possible patron interaction in an attempt to both define their current situation and to predict future staffing, budgetary, and collection needs. This investigation assessed the effectiveness of using various data sources in predicting future library activity and needs. The authors collected data on in-person and chat reference transactions, electronic journal downloads, database queries, and catalog searches from 2009–12. By analyzing these data points, the authors hypothesized they would find correlations that might be predictive of changes in related library services. Results indicated that the strongest correlations track activity over the course of the academic calendar. While none of the data points examined had predictive properties, the strong correlations between the data points over the period of time studied indicated that any one of them might serve as a stand-alone indicator of usage
The Austrian Myth: Victimization and Nationalism in the Post-War Period
No full textThe words of the Moscow Declaration of 1943 allowed Austria to claim itself as a victim of Hitler, rather than a contributor to the Nazis in WWII. In the years following the war, this distinction would define the attitude of Austrians towards their role in war, despite the stark statistics of Austrian support for the Nazi cause. The victim status allowed society to develop taboos and an alternative collective memory of history. This memory was embodied in monuments and museums dedicated to the war. Additionally, a sort of social amnesia for the years between 1938 and 1945 was constructed.
More or less, this silence continued until the election of Kurt Waldheim as the President of Austria in 1986. The former UN Secretary General’s campaign for the presidency led to the discovery of his actual wartime past by members of the World Jewish Congress. Despite the discovery that Waldheim had been a member of the SA and was involved in atrocities in Greece during WWII, the Austrian people rejected the international cry to vote against the former Nazi and elected Waldheim as their president.
Jörg Haider, the governor of Carinthia and leader of the Austrian Freedom Party (the Austrian far right party), was also faced with allegations of Nazi sympathies and anti-Semitism in the 80s but continued to gain popularity, especially in the youth vote. The Freedom Party is one of the strongest far right parties in Europe and currently holds a quarter of the votes in Austria.
While the history of post-war Austria remains linked to the actions of Germany during the Second World War, the way in which the two societies dealt with the guilt of their part in the war separates the legacy of the war in Austria from that in Germany. The taboos and strict omission of conversation about Austria’s role let the people avoid any confrontation with their guilt. This was not an option in Germany. This thesis will address the manipulation of memory in developing a national myth. The author will draw a correlation between the Moscow Declaration and the popularity of the far right thought in Austria today.
Additionally, this thesis will conclude that the use of a national myth in dealing with an unfavorable role in an historical event is not unique. The author will examine the use of the omission of certain historical events in youth education as a tool for developing nationalism
Wow Writing: An Emergent Writing Program for Kindergarten Students
No full textWow Writing is an original writing program for kindergarten students, designed for classroom use half way through the academic year. Wow Writing encourages young students to take their writing to the next level by examining the overall quality of different writing samples before producing their own work. This approach gives children ownership of their learning because they are making discoveries on their own and determining as a class what makes their writing stand out. The goals and expectations of each writing lesson are clearly defined through three levels: below expectations, meets expectations, and exceeds expectations. Teacher-created writing samples exemplify what student work looks like at each level, which children discuss in-depth. These visualizations not only help students to understand what their writing should look like, but also give children a source of intrinsic motivation by encouraging them to consistently go above and beyond what is expected of them. Each writing lesson is differentiated to meet the varied needs of diverse learners, and includes differentiated learning centers and activities to encourage students to practice the focus of the lesson in different educational settings
The Social Contract, Distributive Justice, and Health Care in the U.S.
No full textThe President’s Commission, released in 1983, studied the ethical implications and unintended consequences of the disparity in health care availability in the U.S. and concluded that health care is a special type of commodity, and thus, it is unethical to leave health care subject to market forces. Their recommendation was that society as a whole has a social obligation to ensure equitable access to health care and that the federal government does not maintain the largest responsibility to guarantee success. The aim of this thesis is to show that Americans live under a system of social contract, albeit, a system that requires extreme amounts of tinkering, and as such, the government is failing its citizens by not providing adequate incentive for them to leave the state of nature, such as a protection of equitable access to health care would do. This paper will attempt to use modern liberal theory to show why health care is a social good that should be protected by the government and why individuals should see access to health care as an essential component of individual dignity.
The second task of this paper is to compare the United States and French systems of health delivery and health insurance in order to decide what an ideally ethical system of health distribution would be. The conclusion of this thesis is that the U.S. system is too riddled with bureaucratic inefficiencies and political timidity to function as an ethical and just scheme. In order to correct for disproportionate levels of care, minorities being further disadvantaged, and unfair political rhetoric, this thesis recommends adopting a single-payer, government run system of national health insurance that is predicated upon membership in our society alone and ending the current use of employment-based health insurance. In conclusion, President Obama’s Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act does not go far enough without creating a national health insurance to ensure equitable access to health care and needs to be revisited if the U.S. truly lauds a system of equitable distribution and justice as fairness
The Cell Biological Basis of Cancer
No full textThis literature review explores the current knowledge of cancer in humans on the cellular level. The review will delve into the critical points on the topic of cancer, with a focus on the biological processes and attributes that characterize cancer cells. These critical points include the generation of cancer, the effect of cancer on a cell’s function, proliferation, tumor growth and development, avenues for preventing the spread of cancer cells as well as treating cancerous conditions, and exploring the use of model organisms and systems in biomedical research to study the disease. Specifically, the review first discusses the genetic instability that characterizes cancer. Next, a discussion of oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes reveals well-known mutational pathways by which cancerous conditions arise. Disruption of signaling pathways, as well as the mechanisms of angiogenesis and invasion that characterize malignancies, are also discussed. Finally, the review will look into cancer therapy and the role that biological and computational models play in elucidating cellular abnormalities that can be exploited in pharmacological treatment
