Engineering Study Abroad Advocacy Program (Honors Thesis Action Project)
No full textThe authors of this thesis are both engineering majors at Miami University. Clara is a senior mechanical engineering major and Grace is a senior chemical engineering major. This project has meant a lot to both Clara and Grace, because they both felt as though they missed the opportunity to study abroad during their four years at Miami. Despite being heavily involved in campus organizations and dedicated to their educational studies, both students feel as though there is a small void in their Miami experience. For this reason, Clara and Grace have worked on this project for the past two years, exemplifying passion and dedication to the advocacy of study abroad.
Over the past two years, this project has morphed entirely. Originally, the project’s aim was to create a study abroad program specifically for engineering majors. This program would utilize a Miami engineering professor who would go abroad with the group of students for the semester and teach a lower level/foundation level engineering course (such as technical writing, statics, thermodynamics, etc). This way, the courses would be a Miami University course and the credits earned would be identical to those earned at the Oxford campus. In addition, by teaching foundation level engineering courses, a variety of majors could participate.
After doing more research on the project, Grace and Clara came to the realization that the creation of a brand new program would be both complex and entirely unnecessary. One of the most complex issues in creating a new program is that there are so many financial considerations in making a new study abroad program. Clara and Grace do not have the financial background or expertise to create a financial aspect of a new program on their own and within the time constraints of their thesis. There are currently programs available for engineering majors, in which they would attend a technical university abroad, and take engineering courses that are basically identical to those taught at Miami University. This realization caused a crucial shift in the project. Rather than creating a brand-new program, Clara and Grace would expose engineering students to the programs already available to them. Not only would these students be aware of the study abroad options they have, but also, the opportunities would be encouraged and promoted

"Ecocrítica y epistemología subalterna en Eduardo Galeano"
Get PDFEl presente ensayo articula un análisis ecocrítico de algunas de las narraciones breves del escritor uruguayo Eduardo Galeano seleccionadas de El libro de los abrazos (1989) y Patas arriba. La escuela del mundo al revés (1998). En primer lugar, se hace hincapié en la representación de la subalternización sistemática de epistemologías ecocéntricas por parte del discurso occidental. En segundo lugar, se muestra la manera en que la obra de Galeano revisita y recrea dichas formas de conocimiento alternativo que fueron excluidas al ser consideradas premodernas. Por último, se destaca la paradoja de que, recientemente, el pensamiento (pos)moderno y poshumanista esté llegando a las mismas conclusiones que eran obvias para algunas epistemologías indígenas latinoamericanas premodernas. De esta manera, se explora la convergencia de la ecocrítica “posmoderna” y la epistemología ecocéntrica “premoderna” en la obra de Galeano. Ambas reconocen la imposibilidad teórica y práctica de separarse de la naturaleza y, en consecuencia, critican el reduccionismo instrumentalista de un capitalismo global social y ecológicamente insostenible

Effects of a Pathogen and Pesticides on Gray Treefrog (Hyla chrysoscelis) Metamorphosis and Survival
No full textBoth the amphibian chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) and pesticides have been targeted as contributors to amphibian population declines. Declines have a worldwide distribution, but are only occurring in certain areas. Frequently, chytridiomycosis due to the Bd is treated as a uniform disease; however, recent evidence suggests variation among different isolates of Bd. Both Bd and pesticide effects on amphibians have been tested extensively individually, but few studies have attempted to test the interactive effects of these variables. In a lab study, we tested the effects of six different isolates of Bd, three from areas where amphibian population decline is occurring and three from areas where it is not, and two pesticides, the insecticide carbaryl and fungicide copper sulfate, on metamorphic responses and survival in Cope’s gray treefrog (Hyla chrysoscelis). We expected to see differing degrees of negative effects from the different types of Bd isolates. We expected to see negative effects from the carbaryl both alone and with Bd, but expected to see negative effects from copper sulfate only without Bd. Our results did not show any individual effects from Bd on metamorphic response or survival. We did find that carbaryl significantly increased mass at metamorphosis, time to metamorphosis, and time to tail absorption but did not significantly affect survival. Additionally, we found a significant interaction between pesticide and Bd on mass at metamorphosis. Our study does not indicate that environmental contaminants would make tadpoles more susceptible to Bd
