[EN] The “MicroMundo” project is an innovative educational initiative designed to address the issue of antibiotic resistance through a collaborative and service-learning approach focused on detection of antibiotic-producing bacteria. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, MicroMundo was adapted by integrating university students enrolled in the “Master’s in Teacher Training for Secondary Education” (SWITAs) which mentored high school students (SWISs) through the laboratory research experience. Evaluation of the project through surveys highlighted strong satisfaction among participants, with 100% of university students valuing the teaching experience and 80% reporting gains in essential skills such as planning and communication. Pre-university students also highly valued this experience, reporting an increase in motivation despite the challenging circumstances, and noting that it sparked their interest in the field of science. This hands-on approach reinforces the need for practical, research-based experiences and emphasizes the importance of raising awareness about critical health challenges, particularly in contexts beyond the scientific field.SIThis project was supported by the teaching innovation program founded by the University of León

Artificial insemination of all ejaculated sperm fractions accelerates embryo development and increases the uterine vascularity in the pig

[EN] The semen of boar is characterized by ejaculation in well-differentiated fractions with specific concentration, composition, and volume. The ‘sperm-rich fraction' (SRF), the most concentrated seminal fraction, is habitually collected in insemination centers to make artificial insemination (AI) doses. The absence of the other fractions in AI doses could alter the uterine reaction to AI and not trigger essential responses that could maximize fertility. Thus, there is an urge to ascertain the impact of different ejaculate fractions on the uterus after AI to optimize the semen doses. This work analyzed specific parameters related to fertility in pregnant artificially inseminated sows (n = 15) with ac-cumulative fractions of the semen of boars (n = 6): F1, composed of the sperm-rich fraction (SRF); F2, composed of F1 plus the intermediate fraction; F3, composed of F2 plus the post-SRF. Non-inseminated sows (n = 5) were included as control (C). The different types of seminal dose did not affect the number of ovulated follicles (CL; corpora lutea, p > 0.05) but did affect the embryo development (p 0.05). Independently of the type of seminal dose (F1, F2, or F3), we observed by immunohistochemistry that AI significantly increased uterine vascularization, although with some anatomical differences. The cranial region of the uterine horns was significantly more vascularized in AI-F1 or AI-F2 sows (26.7 ± 2.3 and 28.6 ± 2.0%, respectively), and AI-F3 showed significantly less vascularization at that point (17.8 ± 1.6%, p < 0.05). To summarize, the synergistic effect of all ejaculate fractions accelerates embryo development, at least during the preimplantation period, and increases the uterine reaction to AI in certain parts of the uterusSIThis research was supported by the Séneca Foundation (21656/21), Ministry of Science 381 and Innovation (PID2019-106380RBI00/AEI/10.13039/501100011033) and European Union 382 “Next Generation” EU/PRTR (PDC2022-133589-I00

Home Electricity Sourcing: An Automated System to Optimize Prices for Dynamic Electricity Tariffs

    Get PDF
[EN] Governments are focusing on citizen participation in the energy transition, e.g., with dynamic electricity tariffs, which pass part of the wholesale price volatility to end users. While often the cheapest alternative, these tariffs require micromanagement for optimization. In this research, an automated system capable of supplying electricity for home use at minimal cost called Smart Relays and Controller (SRC) is presented. SRC scrapes prices online, charges a battery system during the cheapest time slots and supplies electricity to the home energy system from the cheapest source, either the battery or the grid, while optimizing battery life. To validate the system, a comparison is made between SRC, a programmable scheduler and PVPC (Spain’s dynamic tariff) using twenty-eight months of hourly historical data. SRC is shown to be superior to both the scheduler and PVPC, with the scheduler performing worse than SRC but better than PVPC (T.T., p < 0.001). SRC achieves a 36.16% discount over PVPC, 13.89% when factoring in battery life. The savings are 44.24% higher with SRC than with a scheduler. Neither inflation nor incentives to reduce costs are considered. While we studied Spain’s tariff, SRC would work in any country offering dynamic electricity tariffs, with benefit margins dependent on their particularities. Keywords: electricity consumption optimization; electric smart control; dynamic electricity tariffs; PVPC; SRCSIThis initiative was executed within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan funds financed by the European Union (Next Generation)

Reproductive performance and backflow study in cervical and post-cervical artificial insemination in sows

    Get PDF
[EN] The present study was developed to evaluate multiparous sow reproductive performance and backflow in post-cervical artificial insemination (post-CAI) using a reduced number of sperm than in cervical artificial insemination (CAI). The experimental groups were divided into sows inseminated by: 1) cervical artificial insemination (CAI): 3×109 spermatozoa/80ml; 2) post-CAI: 1.5×109 spermatozoa/40ml (post-CAI 1); 3) post-CAI using 1×109 spermatozoa/26ml (post-CAI 2). Post-CAI 1 reproductive parameters were similar to those of post-CAI 2 (except for live born litter size which was greater in post-CAI 1) and better than for the CAI group (p<0.01). In a second experiment the backflow volume, number of sperm, and sperm quality in the backflow were studied in the 3 experimental groups. The % of volume and spermatozoa in the backflow was higher in the CAI group (p<0.05) than post-CAI groups (statistically similar between them). Moreover, the quality parameters (motility, progressive motility, viability, chromatin decondensation and morphology) in backflow semen were identical in all three experimental groups, but differed as regards the original insemination dose incubated inside a colostomy bag (sperm quality control group). The present study shows that the use of post-CAI (either post-CAI 1 or 2) in field conditions can be recommended because the efficiency is similar (in the case of post-CAI 2) or higher (post-CAI 1) than when using the traditional method (CAI), representing a reduction costSIThis research was supported by grant Fundación Séneca (08752/PI/08) and by AGL2009-12512-C02-01 from the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation and FEDER. [EN] Chengyu are essential to Chinese language and culture. They condense ancient Chinese wisdom in a story of four characters and are usually challenging for international students. In this research, a mixed method employing quantitative and qualitative techniques is adopted to investigate how using drama to perform the stories associated with the Chengyu might boost students’ understanding of them. The research was conducted at the language school in La Coruña, Spain, with 20 students aged 14-60, thirteen females and seven males of A1/HSK1 Chinese language level. The control and experimental groups comprised ten students who had to learn the same five Chengyu. One week after they learned the Chengyu, both groups took the same test to evaluate the degree of understanding of the five Chengyu. Statistical results show that students in the experimental group outperformed the ones in the control group. Therefore, we may argue that drama significantly helped students understand Chengyu.[ES] Los Chengyu son esenciales para el idioma y la cultura chinos.

Oviedo´s union headquarters: two projects, one powerful architecture

[EN] The Spanish Union Organization was among the most important institutions during dictator Francisco Franco´s regime. This meant its buildings were considered part of what is now called the “official architecture” of the time. Two projects for the Union Headquarters’ building were drawn up in Asturias in two very different contexts, providing an opportunity to analyze the evolution from an architectural and organizational point of view. The building of the final project, finished in 1954, confirmed the start of a new era for Asturian unionism

Emerging sustainability themes in the hospitality sector: A bibliometric analysis

    Get PDF
[EN] This paper presents a bibliometric analysis of 837 publications on sustainability in the hospitality sector, specifically in hotels and restaurants, covering the period from 2010 to 2023. The study assesses the principal research themes and applied methodologies. The study examined three periods: pre-COVID-19, COVID-19, and post-COVID-19. The authors conducted a bibliometric study of journals included in the Web of Science related to the field over the past 14 years. The analysis was carried out through comprehensive indexing of articles and the application of the bibliometric research tool SciMAT. Specifically, a productivity map and a science map are presented, inferring potential lines of research. The results reveal key trends in sustainability research, highlighting predominant themes such as ‘behaviour’, ‘consumers’, ‘business big data’, ‘marketing’, ‘perceived value’, ‘CSR’, ‘local food’, ‘over-tourism’ and ‘SDG’, while a deeper understanding of ‘sustainable communication’, ‘environmental marketing strategy’, ‘green spaces’ and ‘consumer preferences’ were lacking. Addressing these issues could motivate the development of a more positive attitude toward sustainable travel. In terms of methodologies, there was a noticeable lack of data mining, neuromarketing, and co-word analyses. This paper provides clarity on new and necessary approaches and business models to provide resilience to the sector and to involve clients in the travelling experience.SIThis study is supported by REMODEL project which is funded by the European Union's Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 101079203

The battle for the narrative of democratic historical memory in the educational system: when history hides the past

    Get PDF
[EN] This article presents the results of research on the knowledge that young people who have completed secondary education in Spain currently have about the repression of the Civil War, Franco’s repression and the anti-Franco struggle. A mixed methodology has been used, triangulating qualitative (interviews and discussion groups) and quantitative (questionnaire) instruments. The results show that these issues are not always dealt with or are glossed over, and that the contents developed in textbooks and curricular materials still maintain silences, distorted or equidistant versions and deliberate concealments. It is concluded that it is necessary to dispute the account of a democratic historical memory in a rigorous and extensive way in the school curriculum in the face of pressure from the ultra-right in its current “cultural battle” against memory and to help rebuild a counter-hegemonic curriculum, which takes into account the victims who have been left on the margins of history, so that “their name is not erased from the memory” of future generations.S
