A partir
Leveraging the Resources of Modern FPGAs in the Design of High-Performance Masked Architectures
[EN] Side channel attacks persist as the most relevant
threat against cryptographic primitives like the advanced encryption
standard (AES). Functions which “in paper” are considered
secure can be compromised from their implementations.
An adversary can study the information leakage found in the
electromagnetic footprints of a device to gain insights regarding
its operations. These leakages maintain relationships with the
secrets held by the platform. In the AES case, the encryption
keys. Masked implementations seek to disturb these relationships
with an approach taken from multi-party computing.
Sensitive operations are fragmented into multiple shares which
are processed in a different and independent manner. This
prevents the adversary from gaining a clear perspective of the
process. Protected implementations tend to be costlier than their
generic counterparts, thus they are a good fit for hardware
acceleration. Unfortunately, the design of protected architectures
implies a trade-off between latency, frequency, and the amount
of resources. The latter is usually regarded as a fundamental
characteristic, which results in an impact on the performance of
masked architectures. Nonetheless, modern FPGAs have enough
resources to enable high performance protected implementations.
In this paper, we propose two of such architectures for AES.
We discuss the potential performance advantages obtainable
by leveraging the resources available in modern data-center
acceleration FPGAs

One-step microwave conversion of paper mill sludge into magnetic activated carbon for the removal of pharmaceuticals from water
[EN] This study introduces an innovative approach to convert primary sludge (PS) from the paper mill industry into magnetic activated carbon (MAC). As alternative to multi-step strategies, a one-step microwave pyrolysis process was studied, combining activation and magnetization in a single stage. The main goal was to identify the synthesis parameters that significantly affect the production of magnetically recoverable MAC, and to test its applicability for the removal of pharmaceuticals from wastewater effluents, namely carbamazepine (CBZ), sulfamethoxazole (SMX), and ibuprofen (IBU). A fractional factorial design was employed to assess the influence of four process production variables (FeCl3:PS ratio, KOH:PS ratio, pyrolysis temperature, and post-pyrolysis wash) on six responses (production yield, specific surface area (SBET), saturation of magnetization (MS) and percentage of adsorption for CBZ, SMX and IBU. Statistical analysis revealed that MAC produced with a FeCl3:PS ratio of 1:2, a KOH:PS ratio of 1:5, pyrolysis at 800 °C, and acid washing with 1 M HCl resulted in satisfactory SBET values (338 m2 g−1), sufficient MS (22 emu g−1) for easy recovery from water and high pharmaceuticals adsorption. Adsorption kinetics for the selected MAC were rapid, reaching equilibrium within 1 h for all pharmaceutical systems. The Langmuir model described equilibrium isotherms, showing maximum adsorption capacities (qm) in ultrapure water of 217 ± 6, 261 ± 6, and 210 ± 6 μmol g−1 for CBZ, SMX, and IBU, respectively, while in wastewater effluent, qm were 162 ± 3, 87 ± 4, and 103 ± 5 μmol g−1, respectivelySILos autores agradecen el apoyo financiero prestado al CESAM por FCT/MCTES (UIDP/ 50017/2020 + UIDB/50017/2020 + LA/P/0094/2020), a través de fondos nacionales. Legal and procedural approach to indirect evidence in the spanish legal process: doctrinal and jurisprudential analysis
[EN] The main purpose of this Master's Thesis is to study circumstantial evidence and its importance within the judicial context, particularly in the exercise of the jurisdictional function carried out by judges and magistrates during the trial process. Since procedural legislation offers limited regulation regarding this type of evidence, the thesis focuses on the treatment of inferences across various jurisdictional domains, with particular attention to the requirements for their validity, derived from jurisprudential interpretation, along with an analysis of specialized doctrine. The study highlights the relevance of circumstantial evidence in determining the facts that constitute the subject of the case, demonstrating that, according to consolidated jurisprudence, it is possible to reach a firm judicial conviction based on inferences, without violating fundamental rights and within the boundaries established by the legal framework
The taxation of hydrocarbons: analysis of excise duties and their compatibility with European Union law
[EN] The harmonization of the Special Tax on Hydrocarbons with the aim of adjusting to European regulations and establishing a common market in order to safeguard intra-community freedoms, has been configured as a slow process that, on occasions, has generated disputes between Spanish and European legislation, due to the national legislator not complying with the provisions of the EU Directives regarding indirect taxation. This has led to the issuance of two rulings by the CJEU in which the infringement of Union Law by the Spanish State has been declared. The first in relation to the tax established between 2002 and 2013, known as the health cent. The most recent, derived from the regional section of the tax, which was in force from 2013 to 2019. These rulings and the violation of Union regulations have not only generated a large number of refund requests for the payment of undue amounts, but, going further, they also raise doubts about internal legislative coherence
The role of AI as an unconventional salesperson in consumer buying decisions, satisfaction and happiness
[EN] Grounded in consumer motivation theory, this study examined how trust in AI, along with its credibility and
versatility, drives consumers to adopt AI in online retail, ultimately improving consumer satisfaction and
happiness. Survey data from 1,471 consumers in Spain were analysed to scrutinise these linkages. The findings
confirmed the proposed estimated model: trust, credibility, and versatility significantly motivated AI adoption,
which in turn positively influenced satisfaction and consumer happiness. Сonversely, our results cannot evince
the influence of two drivers, namely privacy/security and UI/UX, on consumer motivation to use AI for shopping.
The outcomes of this study underscore the strategic value of trustworthy and adaptive AI in shaping consumer
behaviour and improving retail experiences, suggesting practical guidance for businesses aiming to foster
engagement and emotional connection with their target consumers through AI-driven platforms.SIThis research has been supported by the Junta de Castilla y León (Grant LE030G24)
Valorization of food products in a knowledge-based economy: analysis of the PDO “Sierra Mágina” olive oil cooperatives
[EN] This work revaluates the determinants of value generation in a post-industrial economy through an analysis of olive oil cooperatives in the protected designation of origin (PDO) ‘Sierra Mágina’. A qualitative methodological approach based on thirty semi-structured interviews and one focus group is used. A thematic analysis is conducted using codes to identify, analyse and report data patterns. The failure of the producers of this PDO to appropriate the value generated is confirmed. It is concluded that the PDO does not currently allow the local community to defend itself from the rentier appropriation strategy of other actors in the value chain. To address this problem, the PDO must cease being a simple label manager—an insufficient condition for product differentiation—and integrate new institutional functions related to the cognitive mediation between production and consumption.S
Impact of physical climate risks on agricultural firms’ bankruptcy: evidence from France, Italy, Portugal and Spain from 2016 to 2019
[EN] Frequent and long-lasting extreme climate events can impact business-related natural capital, severely affecting
production and resulting in losses for agricultural firms. Physical climate effects are material dependencies
for agricultural businesses and may severely affect their performance and compromise their survival. This
study’s aim is to analyze the comprehensive effect of climate change factors on agricultural firm bankruptcies
in a European geographical area that is especially susceptible to climate change. Employing a panel of 15 036
agricultural firms, we analyze the effects of adverse climatic conditions in the firm’s headquarters area using
logit regressions, an instrumental variable ordinary least squares model, and the gradient-boosting ensemble
method. We find that bankruptcy is conditioned upon extreme weather events, indicating that climate change’s
physical impacts on firm resources already materially affect the agricultural sector’s resilience and survival.
Specifically, abnormally high temperatures, precipitation, and the incidence of fires are significant factors that
contribute to bankruptcy or insolvency. Furthermore, a “fire weather” index comprising high temperatures,
drought, and wind, combined with fire occurrence, intensifies the bankruptcy risk of agricultural businesses.SIThis study was supported by Grant PID2021-124950OB-I00 funded by MCIN/AEI/ 10.13039/501100011033 and by ERDF A way of making Europ
