Efecto de Aspergillus oryzae en la fermentación ruminal de una dieta de heno de alfalfa: concentrado con la utilización de la técnica de simulación de rumen (Rusitec)
[EN] Direct-fed microbial products have been shown to modify ruminal fermentation parameters and to have beneficial effects on ruminant performance. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Aspergillus oryzae on ruminal fermentation of a 65:35 alfalfa hay:concentrate diet in continuous fermentation system Rusitec. Four fermenters corresponded to the control and four received 50 mg of A. oryzae lyophilized culture which was mixed with feed. Treatment with A. oryzae increase (p < 0.001 to p = 0.039) acetate, total short chain fatty acids (SCFA), minor SCFA production and acetate:propionate (Ac:Pr) ratio. A. oryzae addition decreased (p < 0.001) pH values and increased (p < 0.001) ammonia-N concentration. There were no differences among treatments in methane production (p = 0.230). The inclusion of A. oryzae did not affect (p = 0.386 to p = 0.865) the dry matter and fiber disappearance. Rumen fluid from A. oryzae fermenters did not affect (p=0.465 to p=0.938) gas production neither (p = 0.131 to p = 0.942) total SCFA from pure substrates. The increase of acetate, minor SCFA and total SCFA production indicate that A. oryzae strain stimulated rumen fermentation of a 65:35 alfalfa hay:concentrate diet in continuous fermentation system Rusitec.SILos autores desean agradecer el apoyo financiero recibido del MCYT de España (proyecto AGL2008- 04707-C02-02) y del MAE-AECID (Proyecto PCIIberoamérica A/4951/06). Linking the energy-emissions-water-food security nexus to the economic return of wheat production in Iran: A nutritional LCA approach
[EN] Wheat is a strategic crop of global importance, with a primary function of supplying calories and protein to meet human nutritional needs. In this regard, it is crucial to study the sustainability and the economic viability of this crop in order to improve food security. The central objective of this study is to examine the nexus between water, energy, emissions, food security and economic performance in wheat production (irrigated versus rainfed) in Iran. To this end, data from 96 farms in Gonbad-e Kavus (Golestan Province), collected via structured questionnaires and face-to-face interviews, were analyzed using a nutritional Life Cycle Assessment approach. An innovative set of eco-efficiency indicators was also applied to assess the energy–emissions–water–food security (EEWFs) nexus, explicitly integrating the economic and nutritional dimensions of wheat production. The analysis revealed substantial trade-offs among the various dimensions examined. Irrigated wheat was more profitable (24 % higher net margin per hectare) with a 21 % higher yield (4990 vs. 4109 kg/ha). However, this system increased non-renewable energy consumption by 55 % and tripled the water footprint (0.88 vs 0.29 m3/kg) (though it did not significantly raise the carbon footprint). Conversely, rainfed wheat showed higher resource efficiency, producing a threefold higher net margin per m3 of water used. By combining nutritional value with environmental productivity criteria, this study provides new insights and offers practical implications for technical, political, and economic planning in sustainable wheat production.S

[EN] The research carried out during two and a half years in the Doctoral Programme

A Sexual Affiliation Network of Men Who Have Sex With Men Practicing Risk Sexual Behaviors and Chemsex: A Two‐Mode Approach
Open access funding provided by FEDER European Funds and the Junta De Castilla y León under the Research and Innovation Strategy for Smart Specialization (RIS3) of Castilla y León 2021-2027.[EN] Background: Dating apps for men who have sex with men (MSM) have facilitated unprotected sexual encounters and practices. In addition, drug use during such encounters is widespread among MSM. Traditionally, these populations have been studied in order to relate these facts to their socioeconomic characteristics and not from the perspective of the structure of their relationships, an aspect included in all nursing metaparadigms. Aim: Describe the structure of the MSM affiliation network and their dating apps. Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study with 32 participants recruited online through the apps. The data used by this article come from the same sample and the same questionnaires as a previously conducted study; full details are provided in the Methods section. Results: MSM demonstrated varying degrees, engaging with 1–5 applications (normalized degree: 0.200–0.494), while venue popularity spanned from 1 to 32 (normalized degree: 0.031–0.500). The core of the network, including two applications and 16 central MSM units, exhibited a higher density, that is, a high number of connections (0.593), compared to the periphery (0.050), indicating significant centralization. Conclusion: The sexual affiliation network of MSM forms a cohesive, extensive network, with higher app usage affinity seen among individuals who use drugs, are from different birth countries, engage in group sex, or identify with nonhomosexual orientations.S

Desorption of rare earth elements (REEs) from schwertmannite under acid mine drainage (AMD) and AMD-seawater conditions
[EN] Schwertmannite as a sink for rare earth elements (REEs) in environments affected by acid mine drainage (AMD)
plays a significant role in the fate of these elements. The conditions to precipitate schwertmannite (i.e., sulfate-
rich water and pH between 2.5 and 3.5) are not suitable for this Fe-oxyhydroxysulfate (Fe8O8(OH)6SO4) to
adsorb REEs. In estuaries where AMD-impacted rivers meet (e.g. the Odiel and the Tinto rivers in the Ría de
Huelva estuary in SW Spain), AMD mixes with seawater raising the pH between 4.5 and 8, thereby enabling REE
adsorption on schwertmannite at circumneutral pH. However, the estuarine tidal dynamics exposes REE-
enriched schwertmannite to more acidic water, inducing REE desorption, which has yet to be studied.
In the present work, batch experiments were performed to study the REE desorption from a REE-enriched
schwertmannite within the pH range 4.5–7 in the presence of sulfate at room temperature. Solution-chemistry
data were used to obtain the REE desorption surface constants from different surface complexation. Desorp-
tion of a Lu-enriched schwertmannite at different pH was investigated with High Energy X-Ray Diffraction
(HEXD) and Extended X-ray Adsorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) to characterize the changes in the surface
complexes during desorption. The results indicate that (1) REEs desorb from schwertmannite at pH < 6 and
desorption is pH dependent, (2) desorption of light REEs is higher than that of heavy REEs, (3) REE sorption onto
schwertmannite surface is not a totally reversible reaction, and that (4) both monodentate and bidentate surface
complexes are involved in the Lu-desorption reaction. These observations indicate that (1) REE-enriched
schwertmannite remains stable in the areas of the estuary nearer the sea and that (2) tidal fluctuations
displace schwertmannite colloids towards areas that are more affected by AMD, inducing REE desorption from
schwertmanniteS
