    Numerical Study On Oscillating Flow Over A Flat Plate Using Pseudo-Compressibility in Intermittent Turbulent Regime

    A Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) in-house code is developed to study unsteady characteristics of incompressible oscillating boundary layer flow over a flat plate under laminar and intermittently turbulent condition using pseudo-compressible unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier- Stokes (RANS) model. In the in-house code, the two-dimensional, unsteady conservation of mass and momentum equations are discretized using finite difference techniques which employs second order accurate (based on Taylor series) central differencing for spatial derivatives and second order Runge-Kutta accurate differencing for temporal derivatives. The in-house code employs Fully Explicit-Finite Difference technique (FEFD) to solve the governing differential equations of the mathematical model. In the study two different closure models are adopted, Chien’s (k–epsilon) and Jones and Launder (k–epsilon) turbulence model. For the purpose of validation and verification of the proposed pseudo-compressibility method, flow over a flat plate is chosen as benchmark case. The numerically predicted velocities are compared to experimentally observed velocity fields using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) in laminar regime. The verification of the proposed model is performed using Grid Convergence Index (GCI) method. The discretization errors observed are less than 5% which are within the acceptable range. Once verified and validated, the technique of pseudo-compressibility is use to simulate oscillating flow problem. The velocity fields predicted by the in-house code in laminar regime are compared to the one given by the analytical solution to Stokes’ second problem of oscillating flow. An intermittency equation (gamma ) is proposed which couples with Jones and Launder (k–epsilon) along with unsteady RANS equations to simulate intermittently turbulent oscillating boundary flows. Using the proposed unsteady pseudo-compressible NS and RANS models, numerical experiments were conducted for unsteady cases for Reynolds number (based on Stokes’ thickness) corresponding to laminar and intermittently turbulent flows, respectively. Predicted time-dependent velocity profiles and shear stress distributions are compared to LES results and experimental data. Turbulence properties during acceleration and deceleration phases are also predicted. The sudden rise in shear stress during the acceleration phase of the oscillation, indicating the onset of intermittence, is observed and discussed. Comparison of the results shows that the observed deviations between the velocity magnitudes predicted by the in-house code and experimental data are within the acceptable range for laminar and intermittently turbulent flow conditions. Based on the results of the present study, one can conclude that the proposed unsteady pseudo-compressible intermittent RANS model is capable of predicting the characteristics of oscillating external flows successfully

    Sounds of Silence: A Study of Stability and Diversity of Web Audio Fingerprints

    Browser fingerprinting presents a grave threat to privacy as it allows user tracking even in private browsing modes. Prior measurement studies on HTML5-based fingerprinting have been limited to Canvas and WebGL but not Web Audio APIs. We aim to fill this gap by conducting the first large-scale systematic study of web audio fingerprints and studying their stability as well as diversity properties. Using MTurk and social media platforms, we collected 8 different audio fingerprints from 694 users. Firstly, we show that the audio fingerprints are unstable unlike other fingerprinting methods with some users having as many as 20 different fingerprints. Despite this, we show that audio fingerprinting can still be used as an effective fingerprinting vector as most fingerprints tend to repeat quite often. We devised a graph-based fingerprint matching mechanism to measure the diversity of audio fingerprints. Our results show that audio fingerprints are much less diverse with only 45 distinct fingerprints among 694 users

    This thesis examines how Basque-American communities from the 1930s to the 2000s, responding in part to external threats and accusations of treason, communism, or terrorism, and have come to be identified more with cultural practice over homeland politics. This can be seen through the career and legacy of Pete Cenarrusa (1917-2013), a longtime Idaho politician of Basque descent. Cenarrusa’s early life and career were dedicated to Basque nationalist politics, but his primary legacy is that of a cultural preserver, who helped to further develop the Western United States’ Basque community’s cultural focus, as expressed through festivals, physical sites and community-based Basque-American organizations

    The National Leprosarium in Carville, Louisiana served as a hospital and quarantine center for those diagnosed with Hansen’s disease (HD), formerly known as leprosy. From 1940 to 1946, Dr. Guy Henry Faget worked as the Medical Officer in Charge (MOC) and advanced treatment for patients by introducing sulfa drugs. Faget also wrote eleven articles in the patient-created hospital magazine known as The Star which educated readers about HD, and helped patients face the adversity of ancient social stigma that still persists. This thesis seeks to understand the secular and professional changes brought about by Dr. Faget, and his role in rehumanizing patients after they underwent medical trials and treatments in quarantine

    The Perils of an Extraction Economy: Vernon Parish, Louisiana, 1870-1940

    From the Louisiana Purchase to present day, Louisiana has prospered from its strategic and commercial location. Nodes of commerce like The Port of New Orleans and Union Pacific railyard, among other locations, and the state’s abundant natural resources gave it the potential to become an economic powerhouse. Among the state’s natural resources, lumber provided a boom to industry in the 1880s, which peaked in the 1910s and provided Louisiana with state-wide economic development. This paper argues that Louisiana’s lumber industry post-Reconstruction and a new period of commercialized railroad had a major economic impact on southwestern Louisiana, especially Vernon Parish. This formerly peripheral region of Louisiana grew from a small local region to become center of lumber production for the rest of the country. However, the precipitous decline of the lumber industry in the 1920s serves as a cautionary tale for the perils of the extraction industry

    Does money matter? Examining the relationship between per pupil spending and special education student achievement within Louisiana public school districts

    Current research on school funding has focused primarily on the academic outcomes of non-identified students. However, literature surrounding the impact of school budgets on special education student outcomes was sparse for Louisiana. Recent findings on special education funding stressed the role of funding formulas and their relation to equity. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship of per pupil spending and special education student achievement. Utilizing federal, state, and local financial data, the researcher was able to examine if a relationship existed between per pupil spending and special education student achievement scores on state testing. A secondary analysis examined if higher spending districts outperform lower spending districts for special education student achievement. Third grade students with (dis)abilities scores at basic in English were impacted by the interaction of teacher salaries and per pupil spending. Based on these findings, future school administrators and policymakers can effectively impact student achievement through equitable funding formulas. Implications for future research and practices includes reexamining the current school funding formula structure, disaggregating students with (dis)abilities funding based on IEP classifications, and inclusion of school-level information

    Incomplete Markets and Financial Innovation: Consequences for Risk-Sharing, Household Welfare, and Portfolio Choice

    The dissertation consists of three chapters measuring the degree of risk-sharing in a panel of US households, and its impact on welfare and portfolio choice. Conventional wisdom suggests financial innovation improves risk-sharing by completing markets and lowering transaction costs--households engage in risk-sharing to insure against idiosyncratic income shocks to improve their own welfare. In the first chapter, using household level income and imputed consumption data, I find that households\u27 ability to smooth permanent shocks has slightly increased while transitory insurance remained unchanged. However, I find that participating households have higher consumption insurance. Their ability to insure permanent shocks has improved while their ability to insure transitory shocks has decreased. I also document a change in the composition of risk where the variance of transitory shocks is increasing while the variance of permanent shocks is decreasing. I find significant heterogeneity among households. These results are robust to different income and consumption measurements. In the second chapter, I investigate the welfare and life satisfaction consequences of incomplete markets in a subset of US households. I use a set of parameters describing households\u27 economic environments in terms of income growth, income risk, and transmission risk. I find that changes in risk-sharing have significant implications for household welfare. Cross-sectional differences in risk-sharing environment result in significantly different welfare criteria. I then use IV-regressions to separate the impact of permanent and transitory income and consumption shocks on life satisfaction. As suggested by consumption insurance theory, I find that transitory shocks have no effect on life satisfaction while permanent shocks do. This result suggest that risk-sharing environments have important consequences for households\u27 well-being as well as a significant degree of insurance despite incomplete markets. In the third chapter, I consider the implications in consumption insurance for portfolio choice. Having documented a significant degree of risk sharing, I find that households experiencing positive labor income shocks invest more in risky assets. However permanent shocks are used to increase housing investment, evidenced by the increased allocation towards secured debts. Furthermore, transitory shocks are used to decrease households liabilities, evidenced by the decreased latent unsecured debt allocation

    Analysis of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Systems with Innovative Waste Heat Recovery

    Due to the increase in energy needs all over the world, many nations do not have sufficient indigenous energy resources and have turned towards importing Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). LNG production is an energy intensive process that produces a lot of wasted heat. The objective of this study is to review the current LNG processes and identify areas of improvement. To begin with, this study analyzes wasted energy recovery methods currently used in various power plants, followed by validation of the capability of the software, Thermoflex, against the published performance data of various power plants and corresponding gas cleanup processes. Finally, a four-stage cascade refrigerant cycle to produce LNG was created via Thermoflex and the concept of using a combined cycle to utilize the wasted heat from the gas turbine was implemented. The results showed that about 47% of the waste energy can be recovered from the existing LNG plant
